What's great about it: Low price, good sound, easy to use
What's not so great: Non-rechargable
After coming across the new music format (really just MicroSD cards loaded with an album), slotMusic, I felt compelled to pick up the new player for the format, SanDisk's aptly named slotMusic Player.
In essence it's just a stripped down mp3 player, with no onboard memory. However, it's one of the first namebrand mp3 players, regardless of stats, I've seen for under $20.
It really couldn't be simpler in design or function. 5 buttons, play/pause, forward, back and a volume rocker. Easy enough to use without even looking at it, I was able to pick it up while it was in my pocket, and navigate with ease.
Sound quality is very good, and its ability to take slotMusic cards, and your standard MicroSD card (up to 16 gb) is great. For $20, you're not going to find much better.
I do however recommend getting some rechargable AAAs though, as depending on how heavy you play it, you could need a fresh battery in 1-3 days. That's about the only down point to the player itself.

What's great about it: Easy to use, no need to connect to a computer .... EVER!!
What's not so great: Nothing, well maybe the startup volume is too loud.
Anyone who is old enough to have owned an 8 track, record player, cassette player, or even a CD player is familiar with the concept of loading the media, then hitting play. This music player is just that simple. Buy a micro SD card, transfer some MP3s and hit play, what more could you want ... The buttons are few and simple to use. In fact I've memorized them easily enough that I can reach into my pocket and manipulate them from memory. With no display to look at, there is no reason to remove it from my pocket. It is small and lightweight, so I hardly notice I have it.
As stated in the other reviews, it does start out loud, so have your finger on the volume button.
Another reason to love this player is you never have to hook it up to a computer.... ever! It uses an AAA battery which lasts a long time, so no need to recharge via a USB port. The card can be plugged into a computer and MP3s transfered to it with any computer that has a slot or card reader. Once that is done, just insert a card into the slot. I do a lot of traveling and outdoors stuff where I don't take computer along. So all I need with this player is a supply of music and some extra AAA batteries and I'm set.
Be careful to not load too much on any card. Because the only way you have of navigating is >> or <<. If you have over 300 songs on a single card, then it may take a while to navigate. My work around for this is simple. I have purchased some low capacity cards and have broken them down by category. For example I have a sleep track that has several soft sounds to aid me while sleeping. They are only loaded onto one card, so when I need it, I just place that card in the player and hit play. Then I have some playlist type music .. such as a workout track. Then I have the one mega capacity card. If I could wish for one thing in a future version of this player ... A place to store three or four extra micro SD card would be nice. Because these tiny things can be lost easily.
I love this player .....

What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Loud Volume on Startup
The Sansa Slot Music Player is a good idea. It makes using Mp3's easier.
You just load a micro SD card in your computer's card reader and load it up
with music or audiobooks, put it in the player and listen. It runs on a "AAA"
battery so no need to recharge the player on the USB. It feels solid, looks
nice and sounds good too. The only drawbacks I could find are one after
a while in your pocket it gets warm to the touch, and when you first turn it
on the Volume is quite high also there is no screen,so you need to
remember what you put on the card. It is also a little heavier than most of
the Mp3 players on the market, but as I said it seems a little bit better made
and will stand up to lots of use. Since you control the size of the Micro SD
cards you put in it, you can put as much audio as you want to.
It would be nice if the people putting out the pre-recorded slot music cards
would expand the genres of music offered. Lets hope Sansa will support
the player for a long time.

What's great about it: a Sansa Shaker for Adults
What's not so great: For the intended audience - Nothing
If you're a fan of the Sansa Shaker (but over the age of 10), this is the player for you. Does everything the Shaker does but in an adult package and includes one HUGE advantage over that player. When you turn this device on it will pick up at the exact spot in the track you were listening to when you shut it off, making it perfect for the audiobook phile.
To make "playlists" all you need to do is create folders on the microSD card and name them with a number, i.e., 001, 002, etc, then copy your files into each folder similarly - chapter 001, chapter 002, etc. This is because the Slot plays music in numerical (or alphabetical) order (first by folder name (001) then by file name within the folder. (This is why I recommend numerical naming to make sure files play in order). After playing all the files in that folder, it will automatically advance to the next folder (002) and continues forward in the same fashion. Upon reaching the last folder, it starts over again with the first folder in a continuous loop, so just load your audiobooks on in the order you want to listen to them. A 2GB card will generally hold 1-4 books depending upon file size.
Construction feels sturdy and easily fits in a pocket. Since it runs on one AAA battery it's perfect for traveling since they are available everywhere. Sounds as good (if not better) than many expensive mp3 players. Quality of headphones makes a big difference. The ones that come with the player are nice enough, but plug a Bose headset into this baby and you'll see what I mean!

What's great about it: Change your music without a computer.
What's not so great: Nothing so far.
I have been looking for a no frills MP3 player for quite some time now and all of them, pretty much, require downloading from a "buy your tunes" web site. I have over 200 LP albums and reel tapes that I have been converting to MP3. I don't want to pay for the same song again if the player uses a special file format or I have to have another software in order to convert it.
This player is just what I was looking for. No frills, no complications and the media is versatile. At $4.95 for a 2GB Micro SD card, I can load as many as 4 albums on one card and switch cards when I want. Plus, with the Micro SD card, I can play the MP3's on my cell phone and using the SD card adapter, I can play them on my PDA's. I would certainly recommend this product for anyone looking for a simple, no frills MP3 player.

What's great about it: Good sound without frills
What's not so great: Starts too loud
Have a finger on the volume (-) when you press the play button if you have earbuds in. Enjoy the clean sound Sansa owners come to expect. It wasn't designed to thrill discriminating audiophiles, but it sure delivers for those of us that enjoy our tunes on the move. I gladly sacrificed a cute, thin, tiny package that has to be re-charged for a unit that allows me the convenience of a readily replaceable AAA (single-use or rechargeable). The controls are big enough for my old fingers to deal with. The MicroSD card slot is a really convenient way to have one "program" for your workout, another for your "meditation break" and so on. Maybe the next generation will also have an SD slot for those of us that have trouble keeping track of those itty-biity MicroSD's.
