What's great about it: Fast Computer. Great Price. Gbic NIC
What's not so great: Nothing

"I am a computer technician by trade. I came across this PC and was shocked at the price. While this is not the "best" quad core processor, it is a decent processor, great amount of ram, great hard drive space. HDMI output is great, multiple fire wire ports and usb ports. HD Audio out put.
Pretty much this is a good deal. I cannot build this PC for the $409 cost. I have never saw winblows Vista load so quickly on a machine as it did on this one. My installs were lightening fast (would be faster with a solid state drive) I would recommend this to any one who wants a nice PC for a great price. I would highly recommend it

What's great about it: It's quiet, and looks nice
What's not so great: Locks up, network connection continually stops working (the rest of my computers run fine), applications lock up

"I thought reading some of the reviews on this that it might be a good deal, and be a reliable computer. Well I was wrong. I must say this has been the most annoying computer I have ever had. I am not sure if it is Vista (it probably is) or something else. I have been messing with this for 2 days and nothing helps (Gateway support is a JOKE). I can be online and then all of the sudden the network connection freezes or drops completely. Firefox/IE freeze up, and I can't quit them from the task manager. When this happens the computer will not do a restart. The only way to restart it is to shut it down by the power button.

Needless to say this is going back today, and I am spending a little extra and buy a Mac.

What's great about it: 64-bit, decent amount of ram, big hdd, quad-core speed, card reader
What's not so great: cheap hardware, flimsy case, vista, terrible phone support

"Well, we bought this PC for our business. The PC was great to start out with but after using it for three weeks the computer would not load past the initial "gateway/bios" screen. Turns out the hard drive had failed. Since it was under warranty we weren't out anything other than shipping supplies but it did take a week and a half to get back. Now it's running fine but I am very worried about the longevity and sturdiness of this hardware.

I will also say that while I am fairly happy with the repairs coming back in less that two weeks, the phone support was absolutely terrible. It took a long time to get through and once I did the person I spoke with clearly had no clue. I'm no computer whiz but I'm not an idiot either. A call that should have taken no more than 10 minutes took nearly an hour.

As long as this PC keeps running I will be satisfied with it but if I could go back in time I would not buy it or another Gateway again.

What's great about it: okay when it worked
What's not so great: CD/DVD drive wouldn't work

"My stepfather bought this months ago as an eventual replacement for an XP computer. However, I have just set it up recently in preparation for transfer of information from the old computer to the new computer. I installed a Dynex internal floppy disk drive and that was listed in the available drives. However, when I looked up Windows easy transfer on the new computer and looked at the list of options of copying Windows easy transfer from the new to the old computer, it wouldn't let me select on the "copy to CD" option. A few days later I found out why I couldn't select on the CD option. The CD/DVD drive wouldn't come up in the list of available drives. I called Gateway for tech support and they walked me through checking of the registry and then the told me to do a system restore. This made things worse. When I turned the computer on, I kept getting an error message that Windows could not be installed. The computer would then try to reboot and then would come back to the same error message. I could only stop the cycle by unplugging it. The Gateway tech support people kept recommending getting a set of Windows Vista backup disks but I kept trying to tell them that those wouldn't do any good without a working CD drive to play them on. Best Buy's Geek Squad seemed to understand right away that the CD/DVD drive was defective. Gateway was going under the assumption that the drive was functional but that the system wasn't detecting it. Moral of the story.: Don't call Gateway for tech support. Call Geek Squad instead. The Gateway computer is still under warranty and so we will be taking it back to Best Buy for service. I will post another review with the results of that later."

What's great about it: Worth every penny
What's not so great: power supply (300 Watt)

"Ive had this computer for four months

multitasking is a BREEZE!

I recommend upgrading the power supply to something over 500 Watts if u add memory or an extra hard drive or optical drive or neons etc...woudnt hurt to upgrade the power supply even if you leave the tower stock

has ample amount of SATA connections & USB 2.0 ports (more than one FireWire would have been nice as well), runs super quiet (even with a more powerful power supply), everything works as it should (its faster than cable internet!)..could use a few more PCI slots (nice to have the PCI Express x16 though!) the other one is PCI Express x1...3600 MHz FBS WOW!

well worth the $510 bucks (cheapest Quad on the market...but not cheap on features)

What's not so great: nothing yet

"this is a very good computer for the price. plenty of power and memory. I have already added 4 more gigs of memory to total 8 gigs. the vista 64 operating system is nice and the HD 3200 graphic card is okay but better not to update any drivers or it could lead to problems. all in all this is a very good computer for the price. How long it will go remains to be seen."

What's great about it: Pretty fast, start up is good, no problems.
What's not so great: processor not compared to a 2.3 quad core but its still pretty fast. 64 bit vista has problems installing some software

"I haven't had many problems with the computer itself. Its fast, not the super fast computer like some more expensive ones, but its still fast with a quad core 1.8ghz but its still good. This computer is one you can keep for a long time due to its easy capability to upgrade. Has a single large harddrive which makes it very convenient. The one thing that may be a downfall as well is the placement of USB plugs with only two in front. But besides that, its a great deal."

What's great about it: Well Built, Super Quiet, Lots of Room for Expansion and Upgrade.
What's not so great: I can't think of anything yet.

"If your going for INEXPENSIVE, POWERFUL, UPGRADEABLE, VERY QUIET and FAST, then this might be the machine for you. I have had this machine for exactly 2 weeks and one day and the only thing I do not like about it, is not having two of them because I am constantly being asked "Can I use it? Please?" by my fiance. OK, here's the low down, this machine is solid. The case/tower is light but VERY sturdy. Vista Home Premium may have a couple of glitches that I don't care for but, overall it is a fast O.S. and I like using it better than XP Pro, which is a great O.S. It definately simplifies file/folder usage and storage. It did take a little while to update and remove some of the junkware that came pre installed, but totally worth the time and effort. I didn't have any problems with any updates other than waiting, which was maybe 5 to 10 minutes at most. I usually play around on the games while I update anyway. There are many enhancements for those of you switching over from XP, very COOL enhancements. Also, Media Center, which I have wanted forever, streams movies, pictures, TV, Music and more to an extender or an XBOX 360. I recommend a strong home network to achieve quality streaming as this uses high bandwidth. You can purchase a TV Tuner Card for this PC then record TV, making your PC function like a cable or satellite DVR. Also the On-Board Graphics may not be the best, but are more than adequate for the average gamer. I have played lots of games on it and this PC breezes thru load-times, save-times, displays beautiful graphics, and with its ATI Catalyst Center you can change your graphics preferences for detail or speed or a balance of both. Still, I have NOT used Label Flash yet. It seems like a great tool, and I am excited that there are still SO MANY POSSIBILITIES on this computer to be discovered. As I said before, UPGRADEABLE- MEANING THAT THIS MACHINE COMES WITH A HEAPING 4 GIGABYTES OF RAM EXPANDABLE to 8 GIGABYTES, WHICH AS ANY IT PERSON KNOWS, THIS IS YOUR BIGGEST UPGRADE VALUE. THIS PC COMES WITH A QUAD-CORE PROCESSOR THAT VISTA ITSELF RATES A 5.8 OUT OF 5.9!!! A HUGE HARD DISK DRIVE, WITH EXTREMELY FAST DATA TRANFER RATES AND YOU CAN INSTALL ANOTHER. OH, AND IF YOU NEED GRAPHICS BEYOND WHAT IS INSTALLED IN THE TOWER, YOU CAN INSTALL A HIGH END GRAPHICS CARD. LIKE I SAID, LOTS OF UPGRADE ABILITY. The only thing I can not give any review on is, longevity, as I have not had this PC but two weeks. But, I know that I have bought several PCs in the last 6 years and just like anything else, nothing is perfect and things break. Do yourself a favor and BACK-UP your files and pictures that you want to save, cause anything can happen and it saves you the hardship of loss and being laughed at by your little computer geek brother who says, " I TOLD YA SO!!!". Back to this machine, the keyboard is nice, comfortable not really noisy. The mouse is smooth and sleek. The speakers are ok. The potential for an incredible sound system is built-in, as this PC ships with 8.1 Channel Audio-On-Board. Dual Monitor Support via one VGA-D-SUB and one HDMI Port. I hope this review actually helps those of you out there who are looking for a new PC. I have given you the truth about my experience and knowledge with this Computer. Thanks for reading my review, and, have a good one!!!"

A Good Medium/Low end gaming PC   07/03/2009
By JC9479 from Springfield, IL

What's great about it: Nice graphics card, good for gaming, easy to set up, very quiet, and good price
What's not so great: CPU case feels cheap, did not include monitor

"I have been looking for a PC for gaming for a long time...
And then, I found this! At first it did not seem as if it would play games, but I was wrong. It plays Oblivion on medium-high settings. The processor is very fast, it only takes a blink for a window to pop up!

This is a good deal for people looking to buy a computer. Oh, and to casual gamers.. Don't spend $ 1,000 on a 'gaming' computer. Buy this one instead!

What's great about it: Large Hard Drive, HDMI Output, 4GB Ram and ability to expand
What's not so great: Incompatible Drivers, Windows Vista is a challenge

"If you're up for a tech challenge, go ahead and save some money, otherwise look for a more refined system. I have spent the last three days trying to get everything to work properly, and am about to take it back and try another one because it's issues are over my head.

First off, looks like this machine was built for sale in India, as Google and Microsoft websites came up in Hindi after I finally got Vista to find my Internet connection. (Turn off the windows Firewall). I have nothing against India, I just don't read Hindi. So I had to reset the default language in windows, and on websites that I had visited, but some websites still default to Hindi. There must be a setting I missed somewhere.

I had watched a couple of HD samples from the microsoft site before I loaded windows updates, and video and sound worked great on my 52" Sharp LCD. However, the autoupdates have you load Vista SP2, (Service Pack 2), and it is not compatible with the HD sound drivers installed, so HD sound no longer works. It is a current issue on the Microsoft Support site, and after several hours of searching, I have not found a fix. When I try to update the drivers it tells me I have the latest ones, so this issue is new and caught the manufacturers by surprise. Most of the drivers installed are several months to two years old, before SP2, and new drivers are not available yet, as far as I can find on the Gateway site. If you go to Microsoft or the Manufacturers sites for driver updates, Gateway doesn't bless the results and you may have warrantee issues.

Also, my display blanks out intermittantly (black screen) for a secoind or two. I have replaced my HDMI cable twice, still has the issue, which is not acceptable. I am worried it's the Integrated Graphics not being capable, but not sure yet.

Still, I have had success with Gateway and have enjoyed my old computer problem free for more than five years. So, I think it's a good deal, but you better be well skilled with drivers and systems issues, or willing to spend allot of time getting everything in sync on this particular model.

Just wanted to give y'all a heads up on what you might be in for.

Good Luck
"

What's great about it: quiet , fast enough, good price , big hard drive , quad core
What's not so great: windows vista issues , dvd player issues

"don't buy this computer. Sorry I thought it was gonna be good for the price, and it probably would be if you actually enjoy spending 3 days of your vacation updating drivers and dealing with the most horrible OS in the world "VISTA home premium" , I have used Windows XP for awhile and am horrified by the incompatibility issues vista has with apparently almost all of my perifials! If you are a computer geek this would probably be a decent computer but I am kind of old fashioned in that I naively think something should at least work decently out of the box. This is probably mostly Windows Vista's fault as far as I can tell but after 2 days of updating everything the DVD player seems to become incompatible. To best buys credit they took the first one back and alllowed me to exchange it with no problem , even though the girl doing the exchange was apparently in training it went without a hitch. I got my second computer home and Imediately started dealing with Vista compatibility issues , I mainly have epson scanner and motorolla cable modem issues , well I installed the cd's supplied with my perifials and then proceded to update drivers etc and soon enough the DVD PLAYER QUITS working again, all the troule shooters say everything is working properly but not able to use DVD player once again , sys restore doesnt fix the problem , I think I am going to buy a computer with WINDOWS XP and trash VISTA!!"

What's great about it: simple, basic and decent all-around for the price
What's not so great: onboard graphics / video card and vista 64bit has some horrible firewire video capture issues

"I wanted to write a review because I relied on the customer reviews a lot when trying to decide which system to buy... I think they are all written by shills for each comptuer manufacturer actually... so here goes one from a normal, beer drinking, h3ll raising guy from the south!

Its decent... for what you pay. I had some older ram from my previous machine that I thought would fit, but it didnt... but so far 4 gb is doing well with daily use of photoshop, video editing software, etc.

The video card is basic, I knew that going in, but I thought it would at least be better than my old card... a radeon HD 2400 pro,.... its not actually and I think I might just install that card in this box and use it. vista 64 actually seemed to have issues with the driver for thathd3200 card thats onboard, so that was weird...I went to the amd / ati site and got the newest drivers and its cool so far.

I couldnt capture video from my hd camcorder and it turned out to be some really annoying stuff with vista 64bit and firewire capture... so that just really sucked...luckily, I have enough hd space to dual boot with xp pro... so I partitioned off about 50gigs and installed xp and dualboot between both...I just go to xp when I need to capture video files. (finding all the xp drivers for the components in this box was a challenge, but surf theweb and you can find them... just go to each manufacturers site and youre good to go.

For what you pay, the machine is sold.

Im runnning several apps that take advantage of the 4 cores and its really cool... I keep opening windows task manager to view the 'performance' tab so I can see thegraphs that represent the 4 cores... its kind of cool to see tasks that usually render my machine basically useless justbarely max out at 20% cpu useage... like photoshop work or video conversion, etc.

I was going to get the dx model that best buy has for 700 but figured that tv tuner was something I didnt need (but thefront drive bay was nice) and so far, am fine with my decision. I think this machine (my 3rd gateway in the past 10 years) should serve me well for a while.

What's great about it: 64 bit vista, dependable and fast, expandable to 8 GB ram
What's not so great: Video card

"Remember do not buy this for a gaming computer although it does work on WOW, Spore and other games but you must set the graphics to medium or you will have some lag. With that said though this computer runs smoothly and i have no problems with either of them. My son has one in his room and has loaded it down with all kinds of games and the system has held it's own. Only recently have we upgraded his to a 550 watt power supply and a geforce 9800gtx plus graphics card(being clearanced for 150$) because he is wanting to play some newer games. We have done this after owning it for a year and really it was pretty painless. I think it cost a total of 300$ to do. We had the geek sqaud do the power supply and we did the graphics card with no real problems. We did have to give up the wi-fi feature because the graphics card needs two slots to install. As far as the other one we have owned it for about 3 months and have no complaints whatsoever. For 500$ you get a nice desktop that should last you for a while and be able to handle any upgrades since you can expand the ram to 8 GB."
