The Short Story: So...I am currently deployed and my HP laptop that I've had for over two years took a poo on me. The screen wouldn't come on and the laptop wouldn't boot up. I sent that one home to Best Buy so they could attempt to repair it. Meanwhile I'm thinking "it's about time for a new one anyway".
The Bad: I looked and looked and this is definitely a great buy for the money. It shipped in record time and worked great when I got it. I only turned the thing on 5 times before the screen quit working on me. I could plug it into an external monitor/projector and it operated fine. Before that, it wouldn't let me download any messengers (yahoo, MSN etc) which is very important in my situation. I spent over 7 wasted hours troubleshooting the problem with tech support who tried to have me take the thing apart myself to reset a bunch of stuff (warning! this can void your warranty) Not good. I sent it back and am still waiting on a refund.
The Good: The webcam works great, the operating system is fast, the hard drive space is awesome for the buy, HP has a smooth and sleek look I love, tech support was awesome trying to help me troubleshoot it, it's small and very portable. This would be a great computer if it functioned properly. If you're looking for the best laptop for as cheap as you can, this is it. But be prepared to get what you paid for. I'll probably never buy HP again.
What's great about it: It's a great computer
What's not so great: It malfunctioned on me
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I think for the price it's an excellent deal. I like the keyboard, design, screen quality, and camera. I do hate the fact that HP won't let you use vista on there unless your okay with 3GB verses 4 at your disposal. It handles photoshop quite well which is a shock to me. If your looking for a cheap and poweful laptop for daily operations to meduim graphic work go for it. If your planning on pushing this to the envelope go a little higher end for a mac or sony vaio.. Assuming you have the $$$$$$.
What's great about it: Price, keyboard, battery life
What's not so great: Put a cover on the keyboard when you close the laptop so it wont' scratch the screen

I bought this computer after searching for one for a while. I love this laptop! It is light, easy to carry, the 17" screen is amazing and so clear. Im a little iffy with Vista, but it seems to be okay so far. The GB is perfect for what I use it for (Pictures, movies..). I have not used the burner yet, so I cannot comment on that.
What's great about it: Nice big screen, easy to use, awesome price

For the price I paid, this laptop was a really good deal since I got it at outlet pricing. The display/graphics are really good and the performance is pretty decent as well. The only problem I had with this laptop is that when I tried to downgrade to XP, I came to find out that there weren't any XP drivers made for the Wireless LAN or the Audio so I ended up just sticking with Vista (as much as I despise it). However, for what I do on this laptop, it works really well and I'm happy with my purchase!
What's great about it: Price for what you get
What's not so great: Can't downgrade to XP

I just got this computer and I love it! My only complaint is that the touch pad isn't exactly friendly on your fingertip, but I have a mouse that I use anyway. Everything else is wonderful! It's fast, has great features, and the design is gorgeous!
What's great about it: Great design, good price, great features.
What's not so great: Material for mousepad not the best.

What's great about it: Performance and capabilities.
What's not so great: have to upgrade some software components. I could not burn my movies from my JVC Camcorder w/o upgrading DVD Software.
"This laptop is amazing. I've used it for several tasks...cd/dvd burning, internet, MS Office...no problems. 64-bit Vista is great...no bugs to this point. I'm not sure how they are able to sell this at this price...RAM, Graphics Card, Processor...WOW! The battery life is a little short, but who is stupid enough to buy a 17-inch laptop and expect great portability? If you want an amazing computer for a steal of a price, this is it. If you want light-weight portability, buy a lesser computer."

The notebook is sustaining itself while being used, currently, as a desktop replacement for a computer that is slowly suffering electronic Alzheimer's.
The display is excellent, deep and contrasting color, especially against the fading old LCD on the desktop.
It is really an unpleasant keyboard color, and I hope to be able to replace it someday with a black one. The extra bright chroming around the kb is also a distraction, taking up fingerprints readily.
You will find that the output jack port for sound is on the front of the unit just beneath the right edge of the keyboard, and the jack with its wire run very awkwardly - either around the unit, loose and messy, or under, and with inadequate clearance.
All this criticism stated, I am exceptionally happy with the performance, and Vista 64 seems tame, and even with much software added to the base, it handles everything rather rapidly. It also does quite well adapting old Win-98 and Win-2000 programs to work, where they did not under XP.
It is being used as a desktop replacement, so it's usually plugged in, and I have little occasion to test the battery regularly, but when used unplugged, I have not had to worry about losing power, as the system for dormancy is fine out of the box.
What's great about it: Performs without flaws - Vista 64 is mature (just in time for Win 7)
What's not so great: Keyboard color, bronze, is illegible in dim light; line-out jack placement is poor

after searching for the right laptop for 2 months i came up with this at the price of 615. It is good so far. It includes a webcam, hand touch for the music player on the keyboard, The speed is fast and there are many options on the computer. If you buy the laptop, you should get it checked by the geek squad before buying so tthat you do not have to set it up. I get nice internet reception on this laptop from my router. THe internet speed is fast. It is easy to get smudges on it but it is barely noticeable due to the color. the touch pad mouse is easy to handle It has a dull keyboard like a regular desktop keyboard , which is easy to handle. This is a great laptop so far. I would reccommend you buy it from a store for the best value.
What's great about it: great price, fast speed, lots of memory, nice internet access,
What's not so great: it smudges quickly but it is barely noticeable due to the bronze color, a little bit low volume, but it is good

This is is wonderful HP Laptop, speed iss really great, price is amazing, the 17" display is really big. Only draw back is the high contrast on the screen, the gold and chrome keys make it extremely difficult to be used in low lit or bright areas, because the keys are gold and shiny. Sometimes the keys tend not to be pressed, I had double checked this and just realized that some letters were missing. Surprisinly this gold and chrome computer does not hold finger prints as expected, only in the mouse pad aread. The battery life is great even on standby. Runs pretty cool and quite. I am using this is my graphic system, running Photoshop, flash, Illustrator and other image editing softwares. This has enough power for a long time. The sound is amazing, crystal clear and high def, also this laptop has a HDMI output, rocks in high def when its connected to my tv. I have owned this laptop to 4 weeks now, no problem, there is a program tat is already installed to creat your own recovery disk, I used 3 DVD's, had a few glitches but it continued from where I left off each time.
What's great about it: Speed, Price and value
What's not so great: Keys and smudges

For the price this laptop with the spec's it has is outstanding, dual-core 2.1Ghz processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 with a total of ~2.0GB available dedicated graphics memory, and 4GB RAM and a beautiful 17 inch display.
I love the quality of this laptop, especially the sleek-stylish design, and the full keyboard. Just some things that you might want to take into consideration, the battery life (about 2 hours of battery life while being used), I highly recommend getting a better battery. The convenience of this laptop isn't very good, taken the fact that it is pretty heavy and size of the laptop. Also this laptop runs pretty hot, sometimes I have to take it off of my lap, and set it on to a table, because of the heat coming out from the back.
Just to let you know, this computer has a pre-installed anti-virus soft wear that you have to uninstall thru the add and remove programs, and you also have to call an 1-800 number to cancel your subscription to the anti-virus thing.
What's great about it: the overall quality of this laptop is outstanding, dedicated graphics and dedicated graphic memory
What's not so great: the 17" display is a little shaky, they could have made the screen 1920 by 1080. Battery life.

This is a great laptop! I got it for college so I can put numbers in easliy (yay for the number pad!) and I needed something that was decently fast for how much I was willing to pay. It is good at loading websites and documents in sufficient time. The only real thing I hate is that it is a little heavy and is hard to take with me to many places. However, watching DVD's and listening to my music on it is very nice!
What's great about it: Great picture and sound
What's not so great: Short battery life, not too easy to take with me

Recently i became parlized. I needed something with a large screen. Where the weight of the unit was reasonibly lite. Wanted a 64bit operating system and the memory to stand behind it. I know that i needed plenty of on board storage with opptional high speed storage to use in one of its many slots. Well Hp gave me what I needed there. The software pakage that came with it was sweet. Bottom line system well built for surfing, media of any sort, and work.
What's great about it: HP went out of the way on the build for this has nearly every option availabile
What's not so great: Well my only fuss is the heat dispersment. It runs HOT and thats no joke.

This machine has a hardware configuration that should make it a relatively powerful machine, unfortunately the specs just don't add up to that. First of all, I owned a Gateway about 2 years ago and loved the AMD processor in it, except that it overheated WAY too much. I upgraded to an Acer a year ago with an Intel and didn't really notice it, which I now know is a good thing. I did a bunch of research before purchasing this laptop and decided to go back with AMD. AMD and Vista do not mix. Overheating is 10x worse and the PC still shuts down when set up on a cooling pad doing basic web browsing. The touchpad is terrible and I don't know why HP R&D thought that the slick material would be a good choice. The good news is, I am running Windows 7 RC and Ubuntu on this machine now and both run so much better than Vista. I still wouldn't recommend this PC because of the countless time I have spent rebooting my PC after it overheats. I would save an additional $300 and get an intel, business class laptop (I've learned consumer class is for suckers).
What's great about it: the screen, ports, built in webcam
What's not so great: hardware, touchpad, weight, battery life and VISTA!!!!!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
