I purchased this desktop to replace my laptop for business. After 6 months, it start acting strange, shutting down for no apparent reason. I took it to my local computer service store and was told that in a majority of these emachines, the cpu usage life is less than 9 months, and that mine was shot. They said occasionally there are emachines out there that this will not happen to, but the odds were against me. It was the lowest priced computer at the time that I purchased it. So the motto is: you get what you pay for! Throw in a couple hundred extra bucks and get a decent computer.

What's great about it: Came with a flat screen monitor, keyboard and printer.

What's not so great: These machines are known to have a usage life of 6-12 months.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Like another reviewer, bought this as a second desktop for my husband. I had purchased an inexpensive one for him four years ago (which cost more than this). It was a refurbished Dell that always seemed to have issues. When my husband saw the box for the Emachine, he asked, "Do you think that this one will be any better?" I convinced him to give it a try. He mainly uses it for e-mail, some light Internet browsing and editing and printing photos. I am actually a little envious of how quickly it moves. Purchased the CPU along with the Emachine monitor (18 1/2"). Ordered online and picked up at the store...a great value for a computer that really performs well for my husband's needs. While I cannot address some of the technical issues discussed by other reviewers, I can say that for over-50 age group user, it has greatly reduced the stress previously experienced by a infrequent computer user.

What's great about it: Speed, ease of use, price.

What's not so great: No complaints, truly.

I would recommend this to a friend!

I gave this computer a poor rating for one thing only, so you'll notice my post before you buy it. I really LOVE this machine but I have to let you guys in on something easily overlooked when buying computers. Purchased one on July 2, and had to exchange it because it had a bad connector for the power! I had to wiggle and wiggle the power cord and it still would cut out while working, I knew I had a dud when connecting the monitor and stuff, I would see the connectors move inside the case because like most things made in China, it wasn't put together well at all. July 3 I exchange it no problems at best buy for the same model and it was/is solid from the beginning. I've purchased 4 emachines over 12 years because they are cheap and reliable. I almost didn't get this because it has vista installed, but to my delight, it is the 32-bit version, so it is more compatible with many more things than the 64-bit, namely my canon multifunction laser printer. you might have to use compatibility wizard to get peripherals or programs working, and chances are it will work, unlike the 64-bit version which is impossible to make work with your old stuff. this computer has a much faster startup than my dual core centrino 2.0 ghz laptop with 64bit vista ultimate, and blows away my previous emachines 2.4ghz celeron tower. this computer has 2000mhz bus speed ! One thing I overlooked at the display at best buy was the ABSENCE OF A HARD DRIVE LIGHT. The problem with that is you cannot tell if the computer is frozen, or if it is working. this is very important as you may think it's ok to shut down the computer when in actuality you can corrupt any program if it is still working on it, especially updates or antivirus programs. Ticked me off after I purchased this computer and it is a real cheap move by emachines, BUT THERE ARE TWO OPTIONS. 1)google search "dk harddrive light" and install it. it will place a red square on your taskbar or on your screen that lets you know when the hard drive is working, but this won't help you when you're starting up the computer as your monitor will not show it. or 2) get a hard drive LED light from another computer and install it yourself. I called emachines and the tech guy told me exactly where the connector is on this motherboard. you'll have to do some rigging by drilling a hole on your front panel to glue the light, but this will NOT void the warrantee unless you mess something else up from your 10 thumbs! go to this site and you'll see the pins needed to connect your hard drive LED: support.gateway.com/S/MOTHERBD/SHARED/4006254R/4006254RMVR13.SHTML
if you take that route, just take your time, drill a nice SMALL hole (somewhere that you won't be sorry after you do it) and krazy glue your light on the outside edge and make it nice and flush with your panel. start small and ream it slowly till your particular light is nice and snug.
I'm currently using the dk hard drive light, but will put the light in this week from my old emachines. INSIDE THE CASE, you'll find 4 bays for RAM, 2 of which are used, and to my delight again, there's a blue slot to connect a ribbon for eide hard drives. I love this thing.

What's great about it: CHEAP AND FAAAST! THANK GOD 32-bit !! (64-bit has too many compatibility issues)

What's not so great: NO HARD DRIVE LIGHT

This pc is okay, but it does freezes or slow down when you have alot of files on it.

What's great about it: its cheap

What's not so great: some time slow

Purchased one machine, then purchased a second one a week later, fast response from website to website, the first time it is set up is a little slow until it is registered. Am very pleased with the machines, can't beat the price.

What's great about it: Fast Response time, ease of setting up

What's not so great: Nothing

I have purchased two emachine for my home use. It is a very good pc to use for all my school work and the kids enjoy playing online games. I have had a few problems with my first one the software for reformatting the drive cause some problem but overall it a value for the price

Excellent PC, especially for the price. The monitor is VERY nice! The PC is superfast and does not make any noise. Speakers that come with are so-so. Overall a great purchase! Only issue so far is the mouse that it comes with (which can be replaced easily!) and you can not burn DVD's out of the box without paying for an upgrade. If you can afford it, I would go with the next highest model (320 gb HD/ Vista Premium/ Dual Core).

What's great about it: Awesome PC../Works great out of the box...Monitor is VERY nice...Easy set-up...Pc is blazing so far...extremely quiet!

What's not so great: Mouse that comes with it SUCKS! DVD burnig Software does not allow you to burn DVD's (Movies) without an upgrade.

I would recommend this to a friend!

well, its really bad because the CD player used to work horribly, the graphics card doesn't work for games I buy (mine was made in 2007) and its hard to do a lot. being new on the market (Windows Vista) they had a lot of problems. I'm willing to try Vista again, but get a lap top and something up-to-date,

What's great about it: umm idk the way it looks and how the pictures look and stuff

What's not so great: internet is starting to work horribly, I can't get games to work, and its realy bad

I bought this computer for a second desktop for my husband, and we are going to buy another one today... It's amazing. I really liked my old desktop, but I got kinda jealous of this one once I got to play around with it. It runs very well, very fast, and is extremely quite. This computer is also very upgradeable. which is a plus although the graphics in-game are much better than I expected.

What's great about it: Great computer

Bought the computer on tuesday. Great price at 299.98 with 18.5" monitor.
Upon opening the box and setting the computer up was surprised to see it had a PCI-E slot.

It actually comes with a Athlon LE-1640B at 2.7 ghz instead of the LE-1620 2.4ghz which is a real plus and makes this computer a great buy.

What's great about it: Faster then advertised.

What's not so great: small hard drive

I would recommend this to a friend!

This computer is great, and for the money you can't go wrong, I just got it yesterday and went from running on an old Pentium III with XP to going to the newer processors with Vista. The computer has alot of space, plenty for me, allowing me to save what I need plus all my entertainment without sacrifice. It loads VERY fast, faster than expected, it's quiet, sleek, perfect for any college student out there. Bought with computer monitor and over very impressed. Performance it just great, its easy to use, comes with everything you need right out of the box and is backed up by a great customer support. Highly recommend to anyone looking to upgrade after years of an old computer or someone trying to get through college. Great price aswell.

What's great about it: Fast, Upgradable, Affordable

This computer and monitor was a great price for both as one system. It was so easy to set up i had it done in less than 30 minutes. I also have computer knowledge so that helped. I gave each computer too two different good friends who needed one. It is simple too use, and great speaker system with it also , i turnedthe speakers up and still crystal clear sound. some trial software cannot be uninstalled but i am looking further into this.
i paid with taxes 320.21 each . what a buy . i recommend this too everyone starting out in getting a tower computer and for kids who dont have one yet since it is a low priced computer but well built not a cheap product . excellent value for the price plus the monitor is very crystal clear.
I forgot to add . one friend hasnt had a tower in 9 yrs had an old hp product and i chose to buy this emachine package and one friend didnt have a computer at all and i brought this for him for ease of use and excellent price
I am even thinking of getting one for myself and i have 4 laptops. also dont let the emachine name deter you from buying due to this is a gateway brand computer and gateway is now owned by hp. So , yes this is an excellent buy with great support back up with a great highly rated company

What's great about it: The price was excellent for the computer and monitor i brought two for two separate friends

What's not so great: didnt have free cell games / solitaire games. and norton software was hard to uninstall

I am really surprised at how well this computer performs. It has a lot of good features for the price. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again or recommend that others buy one. I rated a 4 on reliability only because I haven't had it long enough to tell. Best Buy was very accomodating with this purchase I might add.

What's great about it: Lot of bang for the buck!

What's not so great: Nothing so far.

Vista works great tho, no problems. It has 4 slots for memory, so you can add 2GB of memory sticks to gain 8GB. It has a PCI slot just for your sound card and a Full X16 PCIE slot, so you can add a PCIE card. It does have 2 pciex1 slots, but i don't see the point in them. The speed of the machine is perfect, at 2.4ghz everything moves fast, little too fast at times. Overall a perfect rig and gaming is amazing, just make sure you buy a video card

What's great about it: Already i need is already there, the price, the speed, and the appearance and gaming performance. PCI SLOT, PCIEX16 SLOT

What's not so great: Metal Plates( i have to cut them off to able to use a video card ), also 2 pcie x1 useless slots.

I would recommend this to a friend!

My experince with this desktop has been amazing,and i know the rest of this computers life with me will be just as amazing. The keyboard that came with the Desktop is totaly awesome, i had a wireless logitech keyboard and it was ok for a while but the whole wireless thing is cool and all but brakes eaisly. The speakers are cool and work pefectly for gaming and email and also every day uses like surfing the web. The mouse is used primarily for surfing the web anyway. The only problem i have encountered is slow start up the first time but nothing else

What's great about it: Everything

What's not so great: Nothing

Nice computer- very fast on web- nice graphics- Burns DVD's just fine- Restore disks a snap to create- Very comparable to my Dell Inspiron in performance and features. Nice clean case- Runs very quietly- hard drive adequate in size. Mouse and speakers a little cheesy but overall very nice computer for the price.

What's great about it: Works great right out of the box.

What's not so great: No HDD LED indicator light.

I would recommend this to a friend!
