when I bought this at first it was great but then when the hard drive crashed I had it replaced and now the laptop is really slow and i can not play any games on it because it is to slow to run the program and the reaction time is really slow
I would not get another gateway product again
What's great about it: it was fair and it was easy to set up and when it was run at the start the games was great
What's not so great: after a few months the hard drive crash replace the drive never been the same and slow
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I feel I really needed to post this due to frustration with gateway customer service. I bought this laptop a couple days before deploying for 6 months and about a week into my deployment I started having video artifact issues mainly where there was a lot of black areas in movies. After a day or so of this the computer went completely dead and would not boot up anymore. when I returned home after my deployment I contacted Gateway technical support for help and they said I needed to fax them my reciept which i glady did. They did not update my info for my warranty on the site like they said they would which was required before they would give me a RMA for service. I am still trying to get them to help me but it has been a constant battle. Now I have about a month left before my warranty expires and am so frustrated with there customer service that I will NEVER purchase another Gatgeway product again. If you buy this comp get the Best Buy warranty or dont get it period. Gateway Cust service sucks badly shouldnt be rewarded with our money period.
What's great about it: wouldnt know
What's not so great: Gateway`s cust service

I bought this machine about 6 months ago at the $1199 price and it was still a great buy then. To get this for only $900 is just insane. After getting my computer primed by Best Buy (which I highly recommend doing for a few extra bucks) my machine was blazing fast and ready to go with no unwanted software or tray items loading during startup. I'm actually not sure what the complaints are all about with regard to screen resolution and overheating. This machine can run Crysis on all HIGH settings without overheating and WITHOUT a laptop cooler. Best of all, it still runs smoothly. It does get hot while playing games but has never caused a crash. Buy this thing, seriously. Great price, great product.
What's great about it: price, battery life, everything
What's not so great: smudges easily, location of FN and left CTRL button

i purchased this computer and owned for less than two weeks when i noticed the computer locking up and had a lot of lag and glitches in any video media i watched. i contacted gateway they made me pay to ship it to them. it waited for two weeks to recieve my laptop back and it was supposedly fixed. it is not fixed i now have to contact them again to see if it can be fixed. for such a pricey "top of the line" laptop im not in anyway impressed. im in the military and i will inform all my friends that this laptop is worthless and gateway is not in anyway willing to help you.
What's great about it: large keys
What's not so great: cant watch and video media ram has malfunctioned multiple times gateway customer service is horrible

I would like to say at $899 it's the best deal out there. The only other laptop is the Asus G51VX-RX05 which is 100 dollars more. Considering the two;
Gateway has a 17 inch display over the 16 inch of Asus, better DDR3 ram compared to DDR2; although its graphics card is weaker being a 9800M GTS compared to a GTX 260m with the Asus, it uses GDDR3 over DDR3 in the graphics card. Not to mention it has a faster cpu and bigger battery. It actually beats the Asus. The top locks also and has a second bay with cage for another hard drive. The Gateway, although not great looking, does not have those stupid lights or gamer tag with wings the Asus has. Now what I don't like, the quality is not as good. It's quality just seems CHEAP to me. I don't like the keyboard and although the display is bigger it seems washed out. Sound is terrible...unless you use headphones. For me, the overall feel of the Asus is better. I don't think you can go wrong with either laptop. Just decide if 100 dollars makes a difference, a few more pounds to carry and larger screen size. I actually sold this to get the Asus and have no regrets.
What's great about it: DDR3 memory, graphics card, cost
What's not so great: Cheap plastic, picks up fingerprints, keyboard, display, cheap speakers

If your into gaming the memory and graphics card are second to none when playing such games as "Gears of War" or "Dawn of War". Internet pages load fast and even under heavy load of graphics or videos. The laptop comes with the latest 64bit OS makeing it excellent for the newest programs. Can't beat the graphic design on the laptop either
What's great about it: Its basic options make this laptop fast and superior to other laptops I've tested.

The good ole' Gateway 7811FX is still running beautifully almost a year later, minus the left speaking dieing on me suddenly. But given that even Windows Vista works on this thing (cue miracle music/angels) the whole Gateway 7800 series can be considered rock solid.
The battery is fairly decent for what the system draws. I'd say that's the only 'average' thing about the machine.
Cons: again, I can't believe they went with a cheaper screen. That's a real shame. Also, get a heating pad. Anything more than browsing the internet is really going to cook it, so spend the $15-50 for a good cooling fan pad to keep you machine running fast and in one piece.
Overall, ABSOLUTE best bang for buck. Best machine I've bought. Just don't cook it.
What's great about it: The two models are the same, and the system runs great w/o spending $2-3000
What's not so great: they killed the res on this year's version, heat problems

I know this sounds like a troll, but I've been using Apple products since the Apple II+. I love playing computer games and came into a little money, so I decided to get a laptop just for gaming. This was highly recommended, so I gave it a try. Within two weeks, the touchpad and buttons were broken (just stopped working, need to send it in to Gateway). No problem, I'll just hook up a mouse. First of all, the ridiculous Vista can't seem to run anything (I know you can change it, but why should I have to when I buy a laptop advertised as a gaming machine) and I get continual crashes to desktop and game freezes with the video card. Even with games supposedly optimised for Vista. The graphics card will work well for a day, and then crash or freeze all day the next. I read all these reviews and wonder, is this just what Microsoft users are used to? You don't have to be. This experiment is over. I would never even consider buying another Gateway.
What's great about it: Excellent when it works
What's not so great: It doesn't work
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

In reply to Destructo from MN, the fan ramping is common among all high end systems in laptops. I do agree that the ports on the right hand side are inconvenient at least they should be on the left, perhaps designed by a left handed person, (no offense to any). The back ports would have been nice but hard to do with the huge battery and video card. There is room for a second hard drive that I personally needed and they are easy to install, (shop around). Battery life with two hard drives is about 2 hours. I like the switch for wireless on/off in front as I use this as a nonwireless PC as well as wireless. Recommend as with all computers reloading windows before use. Other than that it is a graet PC plays high end games and allows room for second hard drive, what more could you ask for, (I wish it was free, ha ha).
What's great about it: great all around speed
What's not so great: was not free

Here is what you need to know not covered in the specs: Battery sticks out the back, which keeps the battery from being damaged by the heat and is overall beneficial. The ports are mainly on the right side; it would be much better if they were on the back. There are 4 stickers on it (below the keyboard), and one of them is huge. I'm probably going to find a way to remove these. Also, Gateway's online support doesn't help. Below is the real reason I'm posting this review.
The fan on the left side of my laptop will frequently enter a state where it cycles on and off every two seconds. I've read a couple forums where other people had the same problem with their p-series laptops. One person said that this was normal and that they all do it. If it's not supposed to happen then my fan will probably wear out soon. Even if it is supposed to happen it's still annoying to listen to. If you own a p-series laptop, please post a review and tell me: Do you experience the same issue with the fan?
What's great about it: was by far the best gaming laptop for the price and still is a slightly better value than the competition
What's not so great: fan on left cycles on and off every couple seconds, screen resolution is only 1440x900

I fell in <3 with the specs, especially the video card, 4GB DDR3 RAM, and Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo. I saw other laptops with DDR2 at around the same price, some only having 3GB RAM. I was hoping for the WUXGA 1920x1200 screen, but eh, I am definately happy with this FX. The only thing I am gonna call Gateway about is it keeps restarting, even tho I clicked shutdown over & over. I believe it only shutdown the first time I tried. I really do not wanna continue to hold the power button for 5 seconds. Other than that, so far so good. Thanx Gateway and BestBuy =)
PS. The glossy black is BEAUTIFUL! BestBuy's pics IMO are taken with too much lighting, looking very grayish. I checked other pics with less lighting and sure enough the glossy black was one of the reasons for buying.
What's great about it: specs, especially video card
What's not so great: I did not get WUXGA 1920x1200 screen

I originally bought this computer from Best Buy online for $1,149.99 and let me tell you, that is an AMAZING price for the product that you get! I'm a soldier currently serving in Iraq and I needed a laptop that had a good graphics card and could run some top notch games and it has exceeded that. Everything from the USB ports to the wireless internet switch is very convenient. Also it doesn't have much un-necesary software that a lot of other computers come with that take up space. It is a fingerprint magnet but I wipe it down every night when I get done using it and its no problem. I honestly think it would be almost impossible to find a computer for this price that has the same features.
What's great about it: very fast, amazing price, comes with very little un-necesary software
What's not so great: cannot and probably will not find anything bad about this one

Well I saw one of these in store about 6 months ago for $1149.99 and couldnt quite afford it so last weekend I was there again and they had one clearanced for $574.99 because they said it was being discontinued so I got a great deal there. Well the main reason I bought it was for playing WoW and Oblivion both of which play amazingly Oblivion stays locked at 60fps and WoW on ultra settings never goes belos 30fps and thats connected with wireless g cant wait till i get my N router. So basically its an extremely good deal for a gaming laptop even though i got it half off its def. worth the $1089.99
What's great about it: great price, crazy framerates, very fast, long battery life
What's not so great: heavy, glossy lots of fingerprints, not much else

I love this machine WOW plays great on it, does tend to get warm on the right hand side but with a cooler under it, I have had no issue, I love that the disk drive is on the left hand side it makes using this laptop for long periods awsome.
Its so good my husband is thinking of replacing his with one.
What's great about it: Price was good, I play World of Warcraft on it 6 days a week sometime 8+ hours a day and man this machine can handle it.
What's not so great: Finger prints showing all the time.

For $1100 out the door you get a 17in, 1920 x 1200 monitor. A fast processor, and a Top of the line mobile graphics card, I think it is the best or 2nd to best Nvidia mobile graphics card on the market. Then it comes with nice extras like the webcam, full number pad, the label flash dvd writer, the SATA, vga, hdmi ports. I get 80-110 fps on COD 4 on medium graphics, and 45-50 on highest graphics settings. I am not a big gamer so this laptop gets the job done above and beyond.
Great gaming laptop for a deal that can't be beat.(similar setup with less extras goes for almost $3000 from alienware, same chipset, graphics card, etc etc)
What's great about it: 1920 resolution, aweosome graphics card, great processor
What's not so great: fan is annoyingly intermittent. On off on off on off on off.

I bought this laptop to attend the Intel Lan party, over taking my big rig at home. I played COD4 with maxxed out settings, played Flatout Maximum Carnage, played Tom Clancys Hawx, and numerious other games without a Hiccup...I LOVEEE This laptop becaus with the high end video card, and HDMI out, I have cancelled my cable subscription and i can stream all of my shows in HD clarity on my 67 inch big screen. The speed on this is insanely fast, it never hiccups, never locks up. I think Gateway hit the fan on this model and should stick with gaming from now on.
What's great about it: I bought this online with 1920x1200 resolution monitor. GREAT FOR GAMING
What's not so great: It's far to cheap, needs to be about 1700$ for people to take it seriously.

I bought this for my son for his 13th Birthday. We all game, and I usually build my own high-end gaming rigs, and the old rigs get handed down - but he wanted a laptop - and I saw this within my target budget so I bought it.
He LOVES it. I watched him playing CoD4 on it, and I was surprised at how good the graphics were. He's thrilled, and I'm happy. Highly recommended laptop.
What's great about it: I never thought a "gaming" laptop could deliver this kind of frame rate online.
What's not so great: It's HUGE (Duh). Shiny surfaces require careful handling if you want to keep it looking new.

The computer is great value for the money invested. It has worked great with every piece of software I have thrown at it. The ability to upgrade is also a huge positive. I added a second HD the day I bought it.
Make sure you invest in a GOOD cooler...if you plan on doing any gaming you will need a GREAT cooler. Graphic intensive programs and games heat the GPU like a furnace. I use a cooler and still get to watch the GPU fail and recover..or even better lock up the system. Just be careful to manage your heat and this will be a good computer.
What's great about it: Great value for the money. Can handle most games and programs with ease.
What's not so great: The heat...FPS style games and WoW will cause the GPS to overheat.
