What's great about it: The speed and power that this computer is great
What's not so great: The speakers are not up to par

"This is my second gaming/ work computer. My first was a Dell inspirion and I loved it. Now I have up to date ASUS computer and I dont know how I surrivied for so long with out this. The speed and handling are through the roof. I have loaded all my documents and games onto the hard drive and havent even filled half the memory. I would recomend this computer to anyone that is looking for a multi media computer. I have used this with power point and and given several slide shows with it. The graphics card has given me many more areas to improve my presentations. If I had to go and buy another computer after this one I will buy another ASUS. Good luck to you all..."

What's great about it: Graphics power, 2nd HD bay, display, size, PRICE!!!!
What's not so great: Express Gate a bit of a gimmick, Bluetooth would have been nice, external decoration a bit on the tacky side.

"Get one while you can!!! Crysis, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, COD:Modern Warfare, World at War etc.....NO PROBLEMS!!! Looks amazing!!

What's great about it: Everything. I love this Laptop!

"I never write reviews... but after reading all the reviews leading up to purchasing this, I felt I needed to put in my $.02. You can't beat the performance for the price. You can add RAM, and another HDD, as if what was provided wasn't enough. I read tons of reviews, looked in the store, and read some more reviews before putting my money down on this. I have absolutely no regrets. I play WoW and BF 2142 on this flawlessly. High FPS on High settings. No lag.

This is one sexy laptop.

What's great about it: Very Fast for the money..heck, its fast period!!!
What's not so great: Design is a little much, keyboard does not light up, no bluetooth.

"When I loaded crysis and set everything to "Very High" but the shaders (high) and was averaging 25-35 FPS I was blown away! Some made to order laptops, twice the price would not match the performace you get out of this laptop for under 1k. Plays every other game I play completely maxed out with no lag at all. With the Asus stock drivers and factory over clocking setting I nearly got 10k on 3dmark06. I highly recommend this laptop for any gamer on the go!"

What's great about it: graphic card, cpu, price
What's not so great: really really big and heavy for 15.6 inch

"I bought this online by just reading the reviews and comments
I was looking for a laptop with decent graphic card
and this one caught my eyes with geforce 9800m gs for only $899
overall, this is a great laptop in itself, and for its price
you will not find any laptop for this spec at this price

however, this laptop is FREAKING HUGE
it is 15.6 inches but in actual size, its a size of 17 inch laptop
its almost 8 pounds and battery is a giant brick as well
with battery, it weights about 9 pounds
really big and heavy to carry around
it won't even fit into my 15 inch laptop bag
check out the dimensions and see if this is what you want
I kinda had a second thought after realizing how big this is
but I know I won't be carrying around everyday and I won't find any other laptop this good at this cheap price so I decided to keep it

If you need a great gaming laptop at low price
and you are not planning on carrying everyday
this is the laptop to replace your desktop.

What's great about it: Hardware, bang for the buck, gaming at a cheap price
What's not so great: Hardware, runs hot, very short battery life

"I generally build my own desktops and Asus is usually the product that I go for motherboards and any other streamline product because its a quality product. However, it being a bad batch of laptops from the store or poorly built, I had a horrible experience with this laptop

The good: It runs anything you can throw at it, which for a laptop is pretty phenomenal based to its price.

However, I purchased my laptop around 04/01/09 and since then I've had to get 3 replacements.

The first laptop, after using for 2 days, had hardware failure and would repeat rebooting aftrer receiving a blue screen. The hard drive ended up being fried.

The second laptop, after using it as a desktop and using an external keyboard and mouse, using the laptop keyboard for the first time four keys popped out. The mounts broke below the keys after almost no use. This was after a week of the first replacement.

The third, worked for 2 weeks and the wireless internet went completely out.

I have since then returned the laptop and I have ordered a different laptop.

What's great about it: Powerful, Dedicated 512MB 9800M Video Card, Lights, LCD Meter On Keyboard
What's not so great: Died After 1 week, The Lightning Scheme On The Outside, Manual Sucks

"I'm an Engineering student and I needed a laptop that could take the demands of part modeling and assemblies on the fly. The laptop ran great for the first 5 days, but it kept turning off if left on too long even though I specifically changed the power options so that it didn't. One day after I final, I came home and saw that it was off (No surprise). I tried to boot it back on, and after the initial boot up screen 'Republic of Gamers', it went to a black screen telling me that there was a missing or corrupt file for Windows Vista. After being asked what I wanted to do, I chose Safe Mode (And then every other option after that), and it returned me back to the screen telling me I have a missing or corrupt file. When I returned, it turns up that there was another G50 in Geek-Squad that kept getting 'The Blue Screen'. I don't want to say that all ASUS' are bad, but I'm thinking there may be a bad batch of them out there. I liked the laptop, so I'll probably buy another one, but I'd give it a week or 2 for things to get fixed before I go buy it again."

What's great about it: Battery, price, slick design, GRAPHICS, ram, soooo much more
What's not so great: vent is a little hot, customer service sucks, nothing else.

"Thumbs up! I've never heard anything about Asus before, but found out that it was very credible. The graphics card in this just amazed me, and performance is out of this world! I've read some reviews about blue screen, but after 3 months of using this laptop, I havent had any problems. Settings are very easy to use, and full number pad is also nice. Games work incredibly well, and can do just about anything! HDMI output allows you to watch movies on your tv in highdef. With its SUPER low price, this is a deal that no one can refuse! Amazing laptop!"

What's great about it: Great gaming laptop for under a grand
What's not so great: Vista OEM

"Excellent Laptop for the price! Fast with 4GB of RAM and a 512MB nvidia GeForce 9800M GS Video Card which actually winds up giving you 2GB (512 dedicated). I can run any game on it. Has an Intel 5100 AGN Wireless NIC and a RealtekRTL8168C Gigabit NIC. It will connect to a/g and Draft N wireless and 10/100/1000 wired networks. Also has nvidia and Realtek HD audio with 5 Altec Lansing speakers (2 on top above keyboard, 2 in front edge and a subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop). The Dolby Surround sound is so good I do not have to hookup external speakers or headphones to it. It actually solved my sound (too loud while I gamed at night) problem. I no longer have to sit for hours with headphones on. It has every new port you can think of. Has a built in webcam. Has 4 USB ports (1 on the left, 2 on the right and 1 on the back) and even a HDMI to attach to your HDTV. Has a 1394, ESATA and a SD Card Reader slot on the left side. Has Power, Battery Status and Wireless LED's; IR Port and a wireless on/off switch on front edge (between 2 of the 5 speakers). External VGA port on left side with Ethernet and modem ports on back edge. The OLED is nice and can be setup to show CPU %, Memory %, Battery % and incoming e-mail all at the same time. It actually scrolls the subject line and sender name across the OLED when new mail arrives! The other buttons to the right of the OLED are touch sensitive (no need to press). From left to right: Direct Console, Splashtop, Performance Config, Touchpad Disable and Power on/off Sleep/Hibernate. The Direct Console lets you overclock the CPU, set the OLED and the LED lights on the lid. It has 3 long thin lights (left and right edges and across the middle under the logo, which also glows). The LED's on the edges can be set to flash with CPU, Fan or always on. There are no separate buttons for volume, video, etc. but they are all built into the keyboard. Actually there are more functions on this laptop using the fn+ keys than any other laptop I have ever used (there is a small guide to help you and I like it). The Splashtop is nice and lets you boot into a GNU Unix/Linux desktop without having to boot Windows. In fact it will run even if Windows is "having a bad day". The OEM Vista 64 Home Premium on it runs well and has no problems so far. I do not like OEM versions as you do not get the Vista disk with the laptop (all PC Brands have this problem). I had an issue after I installed some Microsoft Updates (BSOD) and without the Vista disk I could not repair it (even with a Vista Enterprise disk I had). Fortunately Best Buy Geek Squad setup a Restore Partition on it and Asus includes the Restore DVD and all driver disks so I had it back up and running in no time. My local Best Buy also had a Windows Guru in the store that was very helpful. All in all I would highly recommend buying this laptop and am very happy I chose to get it from Best Buy. I even had a special option to get a refurb HP with my HP Certified Professional discount and chose this laptop instead. I have been using ASUS motherboards for years and even have one in a desktop that has been in continuous use since 1996! I recommend getting this full featured, reliable laptop at an amazing price at Best Buy!"

What's great about it: Fantastic specification to price ratio, Very reliable company
What's not so great: Screen is soso quality poor viewing angles and soso Brightness rating.

"Let me say i know people hate reading LONG reviews so I'll make this short and only include the information i think most people are interested in.

PROS:

Fantastic GPU (8600 3dmark 2006 at default settings)

Great Cooling 81C after 3 hours of Crysis on Very high (Way below normal for a high end Mobile GPU in a 15 inch model)

Great keyboard matte finish buttons for a great grip, NO keyboard flex at all

Fantastic build quality No flex anywhere, No ripples when back of the screen is pressed at all.

Built in Overclocking (turbo extreme mode adds about 500 more 3dmark 2006 points)

ASUS is an ODM (Original Design manufacturer) Alot of you might say "iv'e never heard of ASUS?" They build Laptops FOR other companies usually which is why you probably have not heard of them directly. They actually build APPLE's Macbook lineup. And as of this year were named #1 most reliable laptop brand.

9 cell battery instead of the X-1's 6 cell. I managed about 2.5 hours gaming.

Vista 64 pre installed Allows for FULL use of all 4 Gigs of Ram

CONS:
Screen Brightness/viewing Angles are fairly poor. Not the Worst iv'e ever seen but not fantastic.

Exclusive contract with Bestbuy means you only get a ONE year ASUS manufacturers warranty instead of ASUS normal 2 year + 1 year accidental damage warranty(Contrary to what some reviews have said). This was done at Bestbuys request to get more customers to purchase the GeekSquad warranty.(Confirmed by ASUS)

HEAVY and BIG for a 15 inch laptop. The laptop itself weighs in around 6.7 Lbs and has the form factor of most 17 inch laptops. 15 inch cases will NOT fit this beast. Also a Big power brick.

Trackpad buttons have a HIGH resistance and LOUD click to them sounds like you are playing with a toy gun.

Added case lighting was changed from Blue on the X-1 model to White on the X-5 which does not look nearly as nice.

Loud DvD drive

9 Cell battery is big and sticks out the Back of the laptop by about 2.5-3 inches.

The lightning bolt design while I love it would look rather childish in a Business enviorment.

Low resolution at 1368 by 768

16:9 Widescreen instead of 16:10 this is unusual and some games do not support it.

Overall this is the BEST GAMING laptop in the pre 1000$ range you will find on the market as of May 2009. Just keep in mind the CONS i listed and make sure none of them are a major hinderance to you.

P.S A BIG thanks to Tyrone At the Bestbuy i went to, to purchase this. He did not HARASS me about buying a Geeksquad warranty. I said no ONCE and that was that. Very pleasurable experience.

What's great about it: Works out of the box, installation is easy to do, managable bloatware
What's not so great: Fingerprint and scratch magnet

"This is the first gaming laptop I have ever purchase. I was torn between buying PC components to build my own PC or buying this as a desktop replacement. Thankfully I chose to buy this laptop.

This laptop runs practically anything I throw at it! Crysis works beautifully on high and tolerable at very high with no AA. Vista, albeit still a pain in the neck, performs well, especially once you fully optimize the laptop (Not that difficult with the myriad of programs available around the net).

The G50VT-X5(I love the name) is aesthetically pleasing. Sure the Orange lightning may look gaudy at first, but trust me, it grows on you after a while. The outer shell is glossy and colored with a blackish brown hue. Sadly, due to it being glossy, fingerprints and scratches are a common burden. However, it can easily be addressed by buying a scratch guard.

What's great about it: When it worked it was great, very fast, beautiful screen
What's not so great: 5 crashes to blue screen in 7 days

"I was debating between this model and the Gateway FX which Best Buy sells for $1149.00. I bought this model because of the bang for the buck, only $899.00. The memory, video card and the chip, and just the over all solid feel of the machine sold me. Check out the exhaust for the video card on the bottom. The machine is like a Mercedes. Due to the way Best Buy has these anchored to the table I did not notice the design on the top of the laptop until I got home, but when I got it home and saw it, I just loved it. Well it worked great for about 4 days, and I was as happy as a clam in high tide, then I had 5 crashes to blue screen over the next 3 days. Memory dump, Bad Spooler, etc. I decided I was not going to fool with it and took it back for a refund within the 14 day period. I almost accepted a new one instead of refund, but decided to think about it for a while. Because I am a loyal Best Buy customer (No hassle customer service on refunds for example) I just took a gift card instead of a refund. I went to another Best Buy close to home and started asking questions. There I was told that this machine also has wireless problems with a very recognizable major name ISP who also sells phones, routers, etc. II came home and read the reviews below and found that my experiences with the crashes were not unheard of. I really wanted to get another one of these laptops but I am holding off for now. I may get the Gateway, but IMO the screen of the ASUS was soooo much clearer than the Gateway at the store. If Best Buy would stock their 13 inch screen Dells with dedicated memory for their video card, I would get that one."

What's great about it: Screen size and graphics
What's not so great: Lots of software problems

"These were the problems I found on my computer:

1- After 1 week I got the blue screen. I had to go to BestBuy to return it and to recover my data. They gave me an other one. I tested it right there and got the blue screen on the new one too. Got a third one.

2- 3 weeks after I bought it. The Keyboard and touchpad stopped working. Apperantly the drivers were deleted.

3- 4 weeks after I bought t. The battery indicator sopped working. Again, a problem with drivers.

I wish I've bougth an HP or Dell.

What's great about it: Performance
What's not so great: Lights cannot be turned off | HDMI output setting changes by themselves sometimes | Catches attention in class

"Well, I bought the laptop because I had a need for a laptop for school and doing different events with a student organization. But, I also bought this for a gaming computer. When my desktop PC (outdated hardware and software wise) got the Conflicker virus, it was the final push to get me to buy something new.

This computer is now being used as an all purpose device. Because, will simply it can do a lot. It has a nice stats sheet for the price they're offering it. People who buy this computer are buying for its performace most likely, so complaining about battery life and size would silly. But, the laptop does offer a battery saving mode which should give you 3.5 hours of life. High performance mode should knock off an hour from the lowest setting.

Only a few small issues with the computer: The lights on the back cannot be turned off. The main system RAM is DDR2 when the GPU is DDR3.

What's great about it: Speed and clarity of display
What's not so great: Unforgiving & Unreliable

"Initially fell in love with the beautiful display and speed of wireless connections and overall processing - forgetting the exterior sparks or lightening bolts or whatever. What you don't know is that the outside edges of the display screen and a bar across the back flash like a pinball machine unless you disable them. What you also don't want to know is that my Asus had two catastrophic crashes in the first three weeks, one of which required a complete restore out-of-town, wiping out every file I had transferred to the hard drive. The second sent me scurrying for a Vista64 repair disk, which I had to download and create because MS doesn't provide it. Be very wary of this unreliable machine."

What's great about it: Graphics Card, Display, Fast, FSB, Great for Gaming and basic buisiness use.
What's not so great: Software, Lights on back(can be turned off), general look, blue screens like crazy

"Out of the box this computer was great. Fast, ran games with heavy graphics, and was a lot of machine for the price. However, I had to restore two times after two weeks of use. Then I noticed that the screen saver was not working. As advised by ASUS support, I loaded some updates and driver software for the microsoft wireless mouse I was using. This solved the problem with the screen saver but the process corrupted several files and error screens kept popping up. I scanned the disk and the computer crashed. I tried to load windows from the hidden partition and it would not load. I assume that the hard drive is the problem. I shipped it to ASUS for service. We'll see what happens next. Probably a good machine for the money and I just wasn't lucky, but I now wish I had gone for a MAC. I give it 3 stars in performance because of the software issues. Otherwise, it should be a 5-star rating. It is a 2 for conveniece because of these issues and some missing things like no Bluetooth. Good Luck!"

What's great about it: Best Bang For Your Buck If You Want Horsepower as of 4-30-09
What's not so great: Built In Speakers Are Poor- Hey It's A LAPTOP!

"There is NOTHING wrong with Vista 64 SP1 boys and girls. Only people who don't know what they are doing would say that since SP1 was released. You NEED a 64bit Operating System to take advantage of the 4GB's of memory this baby has! I'd recommend a few tweaks like disabling the UAC which is EASY to do via the msconfig utility in Vista. And I'd blow the Asus applications you don't really want or need away. The included anti-virus is OK but I highly recommend Norton 2009, it's NOT a resource hog anymore! Personally I did a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate 64 SP2 along with Office 2007 SP2.

I have a hard drive caddy coming from the Asus estore (the only place that carries them) and got an additional 320GB Seagate drive to fit in the second HDD bay this laptop has. When they come day after tomorrow I'm going to do another install using the built in RAID utility. RAID 0 FTW!

The only downer I've found is the speakers are weak. But I have this running into a Denon receiver, some Klipsch 5.1's and a Samsung 40" HDTV in my bedroom at night and THEN it is very nice indeed.

What's great about it: when it works it is just fine, the problem is it doesnt work that often
What's not so great: Crashes, Windows 64, sales rep at best buy, doens't work regularly

"I purchased this computer to provide me with a more mobile option to my other laptop to play vidoe games, surf mail etc as I travel quite a bit. The first one I got had a bad hard drive and crashed within 2 days . . . I should have known then. Then I got a new one from Best Buy within 20 minutes (thank you but I should ave known). I am currently assigned to a post in Mexico and about 2 weeks after I got the new laptop it completely crashed. When I called ASUS Tech Support they let me know it was because either I allowed windows to update itself or downloaded bad programs. Everthing I downloaded was out of the box except for ITunes. Then he said I have to be extra careful because I got Vista 64. Really?! The salesperson from Best Buy gave me no warning. The Best Buy salesperson gave me no warning that I should be aware of any challenges with Vista 64. I am not a computer guy, i work off of one at work for the last 10 years but have only a cursory knowledge of anything past general usage. I checked reviews on this site and it said it was great. Now the sound has gone out, and it will not allow me to fix the problem. 3 major problems with this in 6 weeks.

please find another laptop to purchase, and Best Buy please train your staff to better explain your products as to their challenges and benifits.
