What's great about it: just shy of perfect What's not so great: big, heavy
"i was shopping around for a laptop for school as well as a desktop replacement. i was debating between this asus or the gateway FX for about a month. i was turned off by the gateway because of the label gateway has as a cheap company. I am 100% happy with the choice i made. despite a problem i had with windows trying to update something, this was easily fixed with the recovery discs included with the computer. for people asking about wow, i can say this laptop can run 3 wow clients at the same time on full settings with only a bit of framerate loss( with 3 wows open your looking around 20 fps)"

What's great about it: Everything What's not so great: Nothing really
"If you are considering getting this laptop don't hesitate. This is a great laptop for the money, you will not find anything better for the price.
This laptop will out perform most of the XPS & Alienware laptops at half the price.
The 9800M GS video card is really a 9800M GTS with a different flashed BIOS. It is easly overclocked to GTS speeds.
This laptop is also easly upgraded, has an extra bay for another hard drive and it also supports raid 0, the motherboard can handle up to 8GB of ram and the processor is also upgradeable.
Asus inlcudes 'Direct Console' which allows you to overclock the laptop by 10% and if you feel like it you can overclock it more with other software.
This laptop runs very cool, it will not burn the your lap. I have a 14" HP laptop that burns my lap when just surfing the web and this thing won't even when playing games.
This laptop boots fast, logs in fast and runs everything fast. As far as games go I have only had a chance to play Quake4, Crysis and Fear which I play on MAX setting with everything turned on with no problems at all.
Something else I would like to mention, I had accidently installed a 32bit software that messed up the whole system and called Asus tech support about it. The tech support guys are awesome and definitly know what they are talking about. Easly the best tech support I have dealt with, much better then HP and DELL."

What's great about it: Processor speed, GPU, RAM
"I have been shopping for a great gaming / entertainment laptop for several months and I kept comming back to the ASUS G50VT-X5. I wanted to stay within my budget(under $1000.00) and this laptop was perfect! I priced laptops from other brands with the same configuration and couldn't come close to the ASUS price. I've read some reviews that gave this laptop poor ratings but I have to say I am very pleased. The nVIDIA GPU in this rig is awesome! No problems running games like HL2 or BF2. The Processor may not be the top of the line ( it's an older version) from this particular boardset but I guess thats one way to keep the price down. I found no difference between the P8600 and the P7450, except price of the laptop. Bottom line if your looking for a gaming / entertainment laptop and you don't want to break the bank then the G50VT-X5 is perfect."

What's great about it: very fast great gpu What's not so great: a little heavy but what do you expect considering what it has in it
"what can i say its everything you could ask for and more display is crisp and brite graphics card is great for a laptop but the best thing of all the specs they give you are for the lowest settings it comes from the factory with an overclocking mode thats adjustable in the asus direct console program all you have to do is switch it from normal to turbo extreme mode and bam over clocked by 11 % my cpu is running at 2.35 mhz when the normal setting is 2.13 mhz good jump in power and the the ram runs at 880 mhz not 800 mhz to find a computer this good elsewhere you would spend twice as much if not more if your thinkng twice about buying it dont you wont be disappointed great job best buy for offering such a great machine at such a low price pont."

What's great about it: Speed, Graphics, price What's not so great: size is too big, and it is heavy which is normal
"i bought this laptop when the price went down to 899.99. the graphics is very good, i can play call of duty 4, assassins creed and crysis at highest graphics possible without any problems. i have tsted this laptop with some very ridiculous tasks like scanning viruses and playing high graphic games and playing a music in the background all at the same time and it passed all the tests without any problems. the price is so great for such thing. the only annoying fact about it is the size, if you are going to buy this monster you probably need to get a bag big enough to carry it."

What's great about it: Great Graphics for the price, good RAM and Hard Drive. Asus takes Customer Service seriously. What's not so great: No Bluetooth, Vista problem disabled my wireless so that I had to wipe the HD.
"I was shopping for quite a while before I finally decided to buy this Laptop. I wanted a machine for business, but also equally for games. The quality of the Graphics was key, and this Asus G50V has the best laptop graphics I could find for $200-$400 less than I could find anywhere else. I also insisted upon a Numeric Keypad, and this unit had one. I hadn't heard of Asus, but the folks at Best Buy assured me that they have had no problems or complaints with the brand.
So, I purchased it, and was delighted with my purchase. Great Graphics, large fast hard drive. Some nice built-in features that I wasn't looking for, like a fast-start browser and a visual recognition logon. My game of choice, City of Heroes, runs wonderfully on this machine. The keyboard is comfortable (for a notebook), so using for business works great, too. No problems running standard business applications. The "bloat-ware" that comes pre-loaded was a lot less intrusive than on notebooks and PCs I have purchased from HP, Gateway or Toshiba.
The only significant feature I wanted that this machine is lacking is built-in Bluetooth. Bluetooth capacity shows up under Vista, but it doesn't work. It looks like I will have to go out and purchase a Bluetooth adapter. Overall, this notebook computer is an OUTSTANDING VALUE, as any other computer with comparable graphics will cost at least $200 more.
WARNING: As I write this, I am in the process of re-loading the initial set-up of the computer. Why? During set-up, I told Vista to load all updates. After a week of working great, suddenly all wireless connectivity stopped. Apparently, one of those updates did something that caused the wireless adapter to not work at all -- it couldn't even sense any networks and I wondered if it was broken. A few calls to Asus let me know that I needed to re-load the original set up, and then only allow IMPORTANT updates and not ALL updates. This was explained to me to be a Vista problem and not a problem with the notebook. Calling Asus was OK . . . .long wait on hold, but the folks on the line were nice enough, not outstanding but good . . . which puts Asus a bit above other brands, because my experience with Customer-no-service has generally been bad."

What's great about it: Runs anything you throw at it, looks snazy What's not so great: Batt life
"At 1st i just wanted a laptop that would run WoW on full settings since I play all other games on my 360. I saw this badboy for under $1000 with very nice specs. Now that i have it I just might start playing some other PC games. I had this laptop running TFC 2 and WoW both at full settings and at the same time. I could min one game and go back to another and they ran great. I am very happy with this laptop. The only thing I could say bad is the batt life, but when your running so much power what do you expect and who plays WoW while on batt power anyways, lol. Some might say the screen is not big enough but that does not bother me concidering what I paid for it."

What's great about it: Overclockable out of the box, Dual HDD bays, RAID capable, easy to upgrade. What's not so great: Gets a little funky when upgraded to VIsta Ultimate 64
"I went with the ASUS after a bad experience with another brand.
My gaming days are mostly over, however I was excited to get a laptop that was built with the ability to upgrade and modify in mind. The ability to run a RAID setup with minimal work was an added bonus. Current use is mostly work with a fair amount of home photo/video editing thrown in for good measure.
The good -
Open the box and let it run. ASUS direct console allows 10% overclock with a mere 3 mouse clicks. Greater overclock can be easily achieved through other routes. Performance is great as purchased for the price of this laptop! 25W T7450 processor runs cool and efficient at lower utilization percentages. Currently under minimal load the CPU has been running 40-45C which is half of it's rated temperature. GPU runs slightly warmer at 45-48C. Able to upgrade hardware very easily. Screen is large, clear, and bright. Vista Home Premium 64 does allow all 4GB memory to be used. 7200 rpm HDD makes for faster load and file transfers. One touch Power4Gear button to switch between power modes. Currently needs no driver updates from ASUS out of the box. Facial recognition is kind of nifty.
The Bad -
Upgrading to a different version of Vista will require the drivers for the camera to be reinstalled from the ASUS G50 Driver CD, otherwise you will be looking at the camera image upside down. ASUS does not include a HDD caddy for the second HDD bay, you must order one through their e-store. Personally I'm not real excited about where ASUS put the USB ports on the right side of the laptop. I tend to bump stuff plugged in there when using a cordless mouse. Offset keyboard takes a day or two to get used to. Connecting a second display results in a goofy aspect ration on the secondary display. Currently working on the issue, but have come up dry thus far.
If you are considering this laptop, I highly suggest you pull the trigger. This laptop offers great value for the $$. Sure there are always going to be some negatives, however the positives far outweigh the negatives here."

What's great about it: Excellent Performance in what is not a full-sized notebook What's not so great: The display is rather small and the keyboard is touchy
"I've owned this laptop for a couple of weeks now, and overall it's been a great experience. What I was looking for was a competent gaming laptop that is small-as-can-be and has a full-size keyboard. With this Asus I can play all my games and do work. I even installed XP on this bad-boy thanks to the handy BIOS compatibility setting. The drivers are a bit hard to find for XP (they're not available on Asus's site) but if you search for "G50vt XP Drivers" you should be able to find some. The only compromises I've had to make are No Overclocking feature and I can't turn the LED lights off. Other than that XP grants better performance than Vista 64-bit (8500 in 3dMark06 in Vista 64 compared to 8900 in XP 32 with stock CPU speeds) and it's a familiar operating system, although the webcam images are upside down. :S This can be fixed by tweaking the images in Paint and Movie Maker, but still... it's kind of annoying. That being said, I also have the say that the Keyboard is annoying for me. I type lightly and sometimes my keystrokes won't register so I have to pay close attention to what I'm typing and adjust my speed and accuracy accordingly. I never had this much trouble on my old Acer Aspire or the Gateway FX. It's been quite the trial to get used to it. (For clarification I replaced the Gateway with this laptop because the firewire functionality was poor and I need that to do my work. There have been no issues with the Asus in this manner thus far.)
Sure the display is small and the pixel count is standard but it costs $899 so what can you expect?
That being said I'd like to clear some things up regarding some previous posts I've read here. In Windows Vista it will recognize the onboard GPU as an Nvidia 9800 GT. In XP it's the same story. I used GPU-Z on this Asus and it also said it was a GT. However the specs are akin to the GS, like the clock speeds and shader units count (the GS has 64 at 530MHz, the GT has 96 at 500 MHz). So it IS a 9800M GS. Also this isn't mentioned on Best Buy.com but there is a Second Hard Drive Slot. I've opened it up and seen it with my own eyes. It's there.
Also, get a notebook cooler for when you play games because not only does this laptop become a heater, using a notebook cooler will also extend the life of your notebook.
Hope this helps!"

What's great about it: Can handle any game currently on the market, is good for any gamer and student/business user, bang for the buck What's not so great: Dust and fingerprint magnet, puts out heat will require cooling pad for heavy usage,
"The Good:
This laptop is a great computer that rivals most gaming desktops out there. While it is not going to be as good as a high end desktop you have to remember no laptop will. However whether you be a student, business owner or gamer you can't go wrong with this computer. So far I have yet to find any programs or games that this machine could not run. I tossed a lot of my game modding tools at it, animation tools not to mention I have run auto CAD and played Crysis and many other games at max settings and have yet to hit any frame rate problems or lock up running them at high fps. The specs are nothing to sneeze at and at $800 you can't go wrong if you want a laptop under $1000 that will be able to play games such as Crysis. Also I found it a big plus that you can set up raid hard drives, upgrade ram and CPU too.
The bad:
I really have found nothing wrong with this laptop besides the fact that it is plastic so it is a huge dust and fingerprint magnet and when playing high graphical games or using Blender or CAD it puts out high amounts of heat so I had to buy a cooling pad but now and days that is a given with laptops, however when running programs like Microsoft word 07 or just browsing the net it doesn't require the use of a cooling pad since the heat stays rather low."

What's great about it: kills the competition What's not so great: battery, no bluetooth,
"i first read the reviews on this laptop from cnet and it directed me to best buy which was selling it at a price i couldnt refuse. it seemed to have everything that u could want in a gaming laptop. i loved the the look and i ordered it online without even looking at it in the store physically. there were no suprises when i opened it except that it seemed bigger than the pictures and was kinda heavy but expected for the goodies it had on it.. this was no airbook. well after i put it on it performed like a champ with both operating systems and i even tattooed my girls name into the oled. awesome way to impress a babe or what! didnt find the keyboard too small as some reviewers had said but the charger is absolutely horrifically large. it takes a strong man to lug around this beast in the house. stable cd and dvd burning as compared to other laptops namely the macbook which is highly overvalued! im so glad i made the change from the macbook. no more being taken in by marketing and having to sit with something so foolish that it hurts> take that mac book! the graphics card runs like a champ. the keyboard is configured in a great way and the keys and key print is straight out of a scifi movie. and all this for 899$ is the best deal in the world right now for something like this. the processor the hard drive and the feeling that this is so special. cant do better at this price. if u have money to burn go elsewhere but this is true value. thank you asus and best buy!"

"I was originally looking just for a basic laptop, and alienware are just too expensive, until I ran into the ASUS. I saw all the specs and the $999 price and was sold (later, price went down to $899 and got some money back as well, Even better). Played Crysis on it and so far, it runs smoothly; try playing it on another laptop not meant for gaming, and you'll know what I mean. Also comes with a year of Trend Micro Antivirus and Antispyware. You won't be disappointed..."

What's great about it: GREAT price, incredible graphics, lots of features, (somewhat) reliable. What's not so great: Intermitantly freezes up during load, camera doesn't work sometimes, smudges easily
"This computer is a GREAT buy! You can only get a computer of this power from other companies at up to $2000. Its 512mb dedicated gfx is a bit misleading; when looking up specs in dxdiag, it showed me a whopping 2gb of overall video memory! along with the large ram and great cpu speed, this was a GREAT buy.
Of course, I have to mention ASUS's annoying choice for a plastic case; it's a finger-print AND dust magnet. However, apart from being annoying, it's really not that big a deal performance-wise.
There seems to be some driver issues with the camera; every once in a while, it won't load, especially when using SmartLogon. It'll claim that there is no camera connected. The fix? Just reboot your computer until it does work. Once again, apart from being annoying, not really a big deal.
However, there have been a few times that I've turned the computer and had to wait upwards to 5 minutes just for the main BIOS screen to show up. Other times, I have to use the emergency shutdown button on the bottom to get it to go. Not sure if there's a quick fix for this or not, but this one is quite a drag to deal with, as it happens maybe every 1 out of 5 times you turn your computer on.
However, when these problems don't rear their ugly head, this has got to be by FAR one of the best buys I've ever made. This product is worth so much more than Asus asks for it, and with its ram, cpu, and gfx, it's perfect for live video editing."

What's great about it: Screaming fast, easily overclocked, great special fetures What's not so great: big battery
"I bought this machine little over a week ago and I love it. The price was $999 and went down to $899, no worries i was refunded my money. The staff at the store was great and the young floor kids were a bit envious I was getting such a screamer for even the higher price. Great HD display and a HDMI port can't wait to see it on my flat screen! The graphics card is the GS which is better than the GT or GTS which is the one the Gateway has. Duel boot system is cool, quickly boot up Linux with the touch of a button and your on the web, with pics and music without out having to load Windows. The face recognition is a nice touch too. When people see my computer there like wow where did you get that? I just say Best Buy. Very happy with it! thanks Asus and BB."

What's great about it: Almost Everything What's not so great: Battery Life
"I use this primary for gaming. It works great I have absolutly no lag within the world of warcraft anywhere with the highest video settings. I have a few issues with the facial recognition. The computer is a bit heavy with the battery in, but i bought this mostly for a new home computer. The battery life is not so great, but I understnad that I use the computer for gaming and thats the way that it is. I was a little nervous getting a computer with Vista, but this one seems to run it with no issues. All in all this computer is great for gaming, watching movies, and surfing the net...I love it!!!!"

What's great about it: Price, video card, 1 yr/ Antivirus Plus 1 yr. Lojack Antitheft, Fast, just everything What's not so great: Cant find anythin... i suppose backlit keyboard
"This thing is a beast. I cant find anything I dont like about this laptop, so ill comment on two complaints of others.
Battery life: On battery mode it lasted close to 4 hrs for me. If you are going to run it on high performance than you arent going to get much out of it. But that should already be known.
Gaming Lights: They can easily been turned off! (all of them) Also if you like the lights but dont like the flashing you can set then to stop.
If you are thinking about buying this, do it. You wont regret it."

What's great about it: Video Card, Price, 2yr. Mfg. Warranty & 1 yr/ Antivirus/Antispyware Included, Plus 1 yr. Lojack Antitheft For Laptops What's not so great: Battery Sticks Out A Little In The Back
"This is my 3rd Asus laptop, and they have greatly improved. The audio is much better than before, and it has a better video card than previous models. Gaming is top notch, and I was very surprised to learn it came with a flyer with a serial number to activate 1 year of Antivirus and Antispyware from Trendmicro compliments of Best Buy, and Lojack for Laptops for 1 year also compliments of Best Buy. The trend micro may not be as up to par as my Norton Antivirus 2009 Gaming edition, and Webroot Spysweeper, and may not catch as much, but at least it is a whole year for free, so I will try and see. A year for free on all of these is great considering most pc's come with a "trial" version of antivirus software that typically lasts 15 to 30 days. So this is a big plus if you don't want to shell out more money for protection. Also, ASUS has a 2 year MFG. warranty, however, if you have the extra money I would suggest buying the Best Buy replacement plan, and I will explain why... According to Asus, and Best Buy directly, they are NOT allowed to work on ANY Asus laptop, so if anything goes wrong they will simply swap out your unit with a new one with out having the hassle of working on it. And if they no longer have it in stock, they will give you credit towards a new one of your choice. All and all I can;t believe, or see any reason why for 899 why if you are a gamer you should not buy this laptop. As for the gateway fx, the asus just has a more "custom built" look and feel to it. Almost like alienware. In conclusion I would highly recommend this product. I caled my local BB and had them hold one for me, and when I arrived I simply walked up to the customer service and they already had it sitting there for me with my name on it, all and all I was only in BB about 5 minutes max, and I even payed with cash. Very quick and curteious customer service. A+"

What's great about it: GeForce 9800M GS, Beautiful Screen, Keyboard is nice, Numpad is useful, 899.99? seems too good to be true - but it is. What's not so great: Short battery life,
"I bought this for 999.99 originally, and a week later, it dropped to 899.99 - thanks to the best buy mark down policy, I called in and they refunded me the 100 dollars difference.
First impressions, I found the exterior to be great, very glossy, however, it can be a fingerprint magnet at times. The performance is top notch, runs all the games I have thrown at it beautifully - CoD4, WoW, and I will be testing Crysis Warhead soon. CoD4 runs at an average of 70 FPS on max settings, goes to 30-40 under intense action. WoW sometimes spikes up to 130 FPS, 60 average, 25 in dalaran (high population server... kinda expected)
Only problems I would address is the wireless sometimes disconnects for me, but it hasn't been too much trouble.
Overall, the performance of this laptop is completely worth the 899.99. Incredible price for incredible performance."
