Bought in July 09, Ran great till Nov. Started shutting down on its own. Lost power supply and hard drive. Sent out for repair (under waranty) got it back mid Dec. Sent it out for repair (apparent same problem) one week later. Still waiting for return. Best Buy techs have been wonderful. Letting me know what and why and how along the way. Gateway is no longer the quality name it once was. Would get something else if I were to buy another computer.
What's great about it: Features were good for what we wanted
What's not so great: machine is unreliable. shuts off by itself

Had this computer for 4 months. Started to beep then shut down and restart on it's own. I took the cover off and now runs like day one. Doing that proves that it was running hot. Gateway you guys suck! Install higher powered fans in your computers shell in order to run properly!!
What's great about it: Fast computer when running cool
What's not so great: Shuts down on it's own,Needs stronger cooling fans!!

I purchased this PC last spring and it has run 24/7 ever since. It is attached to a 52" HDTV and I use it as the family media center. It was a great value when I got it, but since I did add alot of gear that it didn't come with. First was a wireless keyboard and mouse. I added a BluRay to the extra 5.25" drive bay. I added two 1 TB hard drives to the system, the slide in SATA drive bays on the front made it too easy. We use it for alot of video and picture editing as well as a big digital picture frame and stereo system (1000W surround sound connected to TV). I have not experienced and shut down issues that other people have mentioned, I finally did this review because the machine has worked so well for so long. The only issue I did have was the default audio settings to the HDMI getting messed up once in a while, usually after an update.
What's great about it: Makes a great media center
What's not so great: Funky audio drive issues

I really enjoyed my computer for the first few months then it started shutting down randomly after much trouble shooting it was determined to have a defective mother board or something else defective inside. so at my expense i sent out my tower after trying to save all data myself. The service depot re loaded windows and sent it back. I had been without my computer for over 2 weeks. they hadn't fixed it. It worked well for a few more months and then began shutting down randomly again. They had not even open the system up when I sent it to them the first time. They never fixed the agreed upon problem. There solution send it back to us. We'll fix it this time. Gateway apparently doesn't have a replacement policy for defective systems. Frustration is all that follows the purchase of gateway products. Dont buy anything from Gateway.
What's great about it: when it works its great
What's not so great: shuts down randomly and customer service is awful

So I came across this a couple months ago at half the price it is now. Someone returned it without being open (still had org. tape across box and wrap inside) and BB marked the price down real low. I don’t know why but works for me! So I spend a couple mins looking at the reviews and the complaint of fans. I went and bought me an Antec 900 tower that has 7 fans and put everything inside of the gateway in to the tower and it looks and works beautiful. I can upgrade even more in the future. I would definitely suggest what some others have been saying on here. Get two other fans or maybe a tower and you are good to go! I do a lot of downloading movies and music and it’s just so FAST!
What's great about it: Price, Speed, TV Tuner, Power, & Performance
What's not so great: Change the tower so nothing now!

Computer is awsom when working. Shut downs all the time. Took me weeks to trouble shoot and 100% exactly figure out the issue. The chipset burns hot and needed a different heat sink with a fan. Otherwise the computer can just shut off without warning. Like someone unpluged it. I doubt Gateway will even believe me much less do something about it. I'll try to contact them and update again. I would not buy this computer again unless this issue is fixed. I had to pull the off the heat sink myself and put a headsink with fan on the chipset. Now I have no issues except it is very loud. To confirm the issue/fix I simply unplug the fan and the computer turns off within minutes. Otherwise it now never turns by itself off anymore.
What's great about it: Very fast and good enough for gaming
What's not so great: Found major flaw

Purchased in June of 2009. Now, almost seven months later, I have yet to have any serious issues with this machine.
It is left running 5-7 "virtual machines" 24/7 with intermittent reboots and rests in between, and the only issue that has occurred has been certain programs such as "uTorrent" not closing properly and forcing a manual shut down, as the PC refuses to reboot. This is caused by Windows Vista, mainly, but still an issue, however minor. I haven't yet experienced any overheating issues, but I do believe that it could be an issue. I have a floor fan pointed at the computer at all times, which could be why I haven't had any problems yet. There aren't really any issues with this machine that aren't either user error, or a result of ignorance/neglect to think outside the box.

This machine runs Fallout 3 without skipping a beat. I attempted to play Crysis (one of the most memory-eating PC games in existence), and only noticed a few lagging areas, but didn't play for long enough to discern a full review of the gaming performance.
Great CD/DVD-RW drive as far as I can tell from use burning CD's, but iTunes doesn't recognize it for some reason...it's probably an issue with drivers or updates, but I haven't cared enough to research. Otherwise, it multitasks great, opening iTunes and/or Firefox about 10x more quickly than my HP laptop w/ 2gb RAM and 1.73GHz processor.
Overall, this Gateway is a phenomenal desktop computer with performance living up to its specs (not to mention that the 19" LCD monitor that I received with it is awesome). RECOMMENDED for any, especially heavy computer users.

I purchased my first Gateway Computer in 2000. I had it for 9 years. With that in mind, I purchased another Gateway. Now Gateway is owned by Acer. I purchased my new Gateway in March 2009. In October it began shutting down automatically. I called Gateway's Technical Support, which is India, who were little to no help at all. After speaking to several Tech Support Staff, I was told that this computer is defective. It has shut down issues. I was told to return it so that it can be repaired. I had to pay for the cost of shipping to their company in Temple, Texas!!!!!! Gateway is not what is used to be. I called to see what they found that was wrong with my computer and was told to call Tech Support which was clueless!!! How can a company sell a computer that they know has shutdown issues? Best Buy should pull this model off it's shelves!!!!!!
What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Shut Down Issues

I have had this system for about 6 months now and have had absolutely no problems. One of the first things I did was install 2 additional case fans as some reviewers have suggested. I also just downloaded a bios update and that seems to have increased the speed of the fan which came with the unit. I believe most issues reviewers are having are because of the overheating issue. Should you have to install additional fans on a new unit like this? Probably not because Gateway should have installed them to begin with but for the price of the unit and what you're getting, an additional $20 and 15 minutes of work is nothing.
What's great about it: Value, performance
What's not so great: nothing

This is my 3th computer and i love it i had a compaq and a hp laptop both sucked always returned got this computer and i love it, its starting to get slow but i think like other people said it needs more fans im going to be getting 2 more. to fix it. So overall i rate this computer 100000000000/5 I LOVE IT> BEST COMPUTER EVER. Fast, Graphics are good, Lots of ram, space, Good sound card. EVERYTHING IS GREAT!!!
What's great about it: Its Fast, Good Graphics, EVERYTHING!!!

I wish I would have read these reviews before I spent a frustrating day speaking with Gateway support! Funny that all the reviewers here all have the same random shut down problem that I had but the Gateway support had no clue! Their final suggestion was to wipe out my hard drive.

Works Great Once You Install Case Cooling Fans

Like most of the other reviewers, I was frustrated with the constant random shutdowns. Then I installed a front and rear case cooling fan (dynex 80 mm fans -- only $9 each at Best Buy) and this completely solved the problem. Be aware you also need to buy a 4-pin power splitting cable. This plugs into the power cord right below your hard drive. It has two ends into which you can plug each of the two case fans. Downside is that you won't be able to add an extra internal hard drive, but there are still two available hard drive slots on the front that you can use. There may be another way to run power to the fans, but I could not find it.
What's great about it: Great Specs. Fast Computer, Great Price
What's not so great: Must install case cooling fans to keep system from shutting down

Purchased Feb 2nd 2009, started sporatic overheating in june... By october, without additional cooling fan, will overheat and shutdown within 10 minutes of booting up.
Buy it, spend a few extra bucks on an additional cooling fan (screw mounts and grate are already there in the back!) get it installed and enjoy your computer.
What's great about it: Great Computer for the money out of the box.
What's not so great: overheats, but an easy fix.

Bought in mid-June 2009. My mid-July 2009 the troubles began. Random reboots, then total system failure. Bottom line, lost all software and files. Had to pay to pack and ship back to Gateway. Once it was returned the same problems started again about 2 weeks later. Have begged for a new computer but Gateway refuses. I have to send back again even though it's the same recurring problem. Not happy at all. Have had several desktops, mainly Compaq and HP and have never had problems with them. This will DEFINITELY be my last Gateway.
What's great about it: Awesome when it works, which is rare
What's not so great: Reboots itself every 2-3 minutes, overheats, only 2 USB ports in front

i have had this PC for a while now, loved it the first day i got it. I started to experience problems a month or so after i got it, went through many many troubleshoots, to find out that it has a mediocre CPU cooling fan that overheats causing it to shut down un-expectedly. I solved this issue by taking off the side panel and placing a small portable fan to blow on the cpu. if i shut the fan off it will shut down after about 10 minutes. so buy a new CPU cooling fan or just go with the ghetto way n have a fan blowing air into the inside of the tower. other than that annoying problem its the best pc i have ever had with the best price. hopw this helps!
What's great about it: Speed, Space, Affordability
What's not so great: PC will shut down from overheating, needs better CPU fan

This pc rocked the first day I had it then I was like; lets see if its any better with a 1G graphic card and powersupply. O yea the power supply sucks. but for extra 500 bucks you can make this your super game machine! I play intense MMORPG's and it never lags, never dropped, and always a low latency with connection. All in all its worth every penny.
What's great about it: So much space for anything and everything for you buck.
What's not so great: you have to upgrade this bad boy

Okay, i just want everyone to know that this computer is absolutely amazing! There is only one problem though, there are random shut downs! But i know how to fix it! Simply either buy a new fan(20 dollars), or clean your inner case! The reason it keeps shutting off is because there is so much dust in the fan and on the inside of the case that the fan cant blow out the dust, it simply spreads it out causing the heat to defuse within the case there for leading to the safety feature of it shutting off! So just simply turn off the computer, remove the case, and vacuum or wipe the dust away once a month or once every 2 months and your set! This computer is honestly amazing! Its fast, lots of RAM, and an amazing graphics card! I loaded 8 Crysis games all at once with no lag! If you want a computer for top performance but little responsiblilty(cleaning the inner case) i HIGHLY recommend this one!
What's great about it: Everything?
What's not so great: Clean up!

When I first got the pc i too started getting the lockups. So i can a cpu temp monitering program.. Ran hotter then the bios let it so it would shut down. The first thing i recomend is changing the cpu cooler and adding 2 90mm fans one for the back and another below the harddrive bays i used (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8990489&st=cpu+cooler&lp=5&type=product&cp=1&id=1218007082289) it works great havent had any problems sence.
What's great about it: Great Ram video Speed
What's not so great: The cpu cooler that comes w/ the unit in no where near powerfull enough.

First one I got, I noticed the cd/dvd writer did not work so after countless and wasteful hours talking to gateway technical support, I took it back to best buy where they diagnosed the issue right away and gave me a new one.
The second one, like so many others have mentioned, started having random shut downs after 3-4 months. I spent days talking to the gateway customer service, and they refuse to service it. They keep running me around in circles and won't give me a solution or take it for service.
Bottom line, the computer is a piece of junk, and Gateway customer service is ridiculously difficult to work with. DO NOT BUY GATEWAY!!

I bought this computer approximately 4 months ago. Since then it has not always booted up correctly. Recently it now takes 4-5 times before it boots at all. look at some of the other reviews. This computer stinks buy something else other than a Gateway
