Good Computer, No Problems05/07/2009
By sopas
What's great about it: Performance, RAM, Price What's not so great: No user manual
"I have had the computer for about 3 months now and still happy with it. I have had no problems and it seems to run any program with ease. I've done a bit of gaming with it and the games play pretty smooth. I also use Pinnacle Studio 12 (which loads in about 7 sec) and it has no problem editing and creating HD movies. It is a lot of performance for the price, I just hope it runs as long as my last Gateway laptop (still running after 5 1/2 years). A user guide did not come with the computer, but there are a few documents that can be downloaded from Gateway's website. I would like to use some of the media and TV tools, but it will just take a bit of research and experimenting to figure it out..."

In theory, it's fantastic05/06/2009

What's great about it: Anything you could want in a computer is here What's not so great: Um... it kinda sucks?
"Let me preface this by saying that I bought this computer, had the problem, returned it for the exact same computer, had the exact same problem. So i'm pretty sure it's not a one-off issue.
Everything on the computer works flawlessly. So why two stars? Because, during the flawless usage of the computer, at almost clock-work intervals (about every minute and a half or so), the performance will bog down for about 2 seconds. but it's a weird type of bog. the performance doesn't really show it, but if you're listening to sound or watching a video, the sound will start to stutter very badly. the video, also, will slow. and it happens litterally like clockwork, so if a system ding goes off or an IM window buzzes at the right time, you will hear it stutter the sound. It only lasts about 2 seconds, but it's litterally once a minute or so.
I turned in the original one, got a new one. Same thing. At first i thought it was the 64bit vista, so I put in 32. Didn't work. Thought it was some system process or something. Nope. Put in a completely new, fresh Hard drive... still does it. I'm at the "replace video/sound card and powersupply" phase to try to fix it. Which, if that's the case, the entire computer is pointless. FORTUNATELY I have the soundcard/videocard/powersupply from the last machine to test.
Bottom line, this computer has the potential to be a flipping amazing machine; but there is the chance that yours might have the same problem as mine. Just a warning."

What's great about it: Easy set up, Good Price What's not so great: No software, dust magnet
"This is my 1st gateway computer and I've been very impressed thusfar. I bought this computer a couple of months ago, after doing my homework and looking at many different computers. This included compairable modles from HP & Dell. The price for what you get just can be beaten, by the others. The two very minor issues that I have with this product is that (1)the black finish seems to attract dust like a magnet. (2) It would have been nice if gateway would've included the cd's for the software that came with the computer.(Just In Case) I Knew this prior to buing this computer and didn't think twice about it. No problems so far and don't expect any. Would definately buy again."

Awesome system!05/02/2009
By WJhurdfrom Rochester, NY
What's great about it: Fast CPU, Tons of RAM, Large HDD, Killer graphics card, well built case, and the best bang for the buck! What's not so great: Needs higher wattage power supply, and better heatsink & fan for the graphics card. Demo software for the DVD creator
"Flat out let me say, don't spend your hard earned money anywhere else but here. This rig does it all, gaming TV, DVD, HD out to tv, RCA inputs for video capture, and photos. The Nvidia graphics card has its OWN DDR3 video ram, its NOT shared with the system memory, so you can achieve killer frame rates on the most demanding of games. I was never a big fan of Vista, but with this rig, its flawless. Not a lot of junk to remove for demos or trial ware when you first get it, some, but it took me about 45 min to purge it all. Looks great on the Aero interface, and its quick and very responsive. Best buy has other gateway systems for more money, and the one with the I7 CPU will out do this one, but it if you have don't have that kind of bank, buy this system and you will NOT be disappointed."

Think Twice04/29/2009
By Ed22222from Oregon
What's great about it: Loved it until it CRASHED What's not so great: Lasted a Whole 6 months
"The Gateway keyboard will loose the letters e,t,i, and parts of others as it does not hold up! The keyboard works but the letters ware off the keyboard. After 6 months the computer failed. Best Buy was great. The charged $20 or $30 to look at it. Then Gateway charged another $20 for new system disks (which don't come with the unit new) and now the unit goes back to the factory in TX for who knows how long. I would think twice about buying a Gateway! It did not hold up!"

Solid System, Good Price04/25/2009
By Brant1from NC
What's great about it: Power for Price What's not so great: TV Tuner / Remote
"I was looking for a system I could do several things on right out of the box.
Gaming: First and foremost, World Of Warcraft. This machine easily handles WoW at maximum graphics settings. I also purchased the 22" Gateway HD monitor at the same time. I am able to run WoW at 1650x1080 with all sliders maxed and get 50+ fps in most areas. 20+ in Dalaran at 8PM server time after hearthing in (WoW folks know exactly what I am referring to). 8GB of RAM insures a smooth experience. Even with iTunes running in the background, I have yet to see the slightest blimp on the lag-o-meter. Not bad for $779. CoD4 runs like a champ. No video lag or hick-ups at high graphics settings. Older games like HL2 and BF2 are maxed with the machine yawning at me.
Setup: Out of the box, you will need to make your own system restore disks. There is a very easy to use utility that will burn both the system disks and driver/app disks onto 4 DVDs. It comes with a minimal amount of "extra" software. A trial of Office 2007, 30 day Trial of Norton 360 and a couple of Full version Cyberlink apps for making videos are all that greet you beyond the normal Microsoft Apps like a full version of MS Works.
Multimedia: The TV tuner card is lacking in documentation. When I say lacking, I mean none. Luckily, Windows Media Center will take over once you put the coax to the tv tuner card. It only takes a few minutes of tinkering to be watching and or recording tv shows. There is a built in 15-in-1 card reader that pops up from the top of the unit. At this point, opening it is no issue but I have read reviews where folks have reported that it can be a bear to open. The built in Realtek HD sound card is solid. My iTunes, games and movies have rich sound. The video card is a nVidia GT120. nVidia has re-branded their cards and this is the same thing is a 9500GT. There is 1GB of video memory for the card. It is also a stand-alone card and not integrated into the motherboard nor is it "shared" video memory.
Furture Expansion: So far, I have found 6 USB ports. There is a compartment you can open on the front of the tower that exposes 2 removable SATA drive bays complete with trays. VERY NICE FEATURE. The system comes with a 640GB HD with about 40GB of it not usable. I assume that Gateway put all the system files on a hidden partition but have not done any investigation as of yet. You can easily put 2 additional hard drives in this machine without even removing the cover. 8BG of RAM. By the time I need more than 8GB of RAM this machine will be obsolete so no need to worry about memory. It is not an i7 processor but it is a quad and it is also $779 so an i7 is just not in the budget for this machine.
Recap: So far, my experience with this machine has been very positive and I am more than satisfied with what I ended up with for my money. You can also check out some 'professional' reviews of this machine at:

Beware the blue screen04/14/2009
By jim1232from la, cal
What's great about it: Powerful features, Good price What's not so great: The Blue Screen
"This is the worst Gateway I have ever had. I get the blue screen of death at least once a day.I have updated all the drivers and continue to get the blue scren. The TV tuner doesn't tune digital cable - just over the air digital signals and analog cable. The analog cable is poor quality reception hower the over the air HD digital signals are realy good. I,m annoyed at the fact that the disign of the pop box on the top for media cards is junk. It drives me nuts tring to get the push to open just right. i know it will break so i just leave it open. Then there's the thing with the Raid configure prompt every time you start it. The thing only has 1 harddrive. Why configue????"

Powerful, but I have mix emotions04/13/2009
By 70plusSeniorfrom Massapequa, N.Y.
What's great about it: It's more than I can handle and pretty fast. What's not so great: Flat Laptop type keyboard, Tinny speakers, Very vague sound controls. NO MANUAL!!!
"I have just enough knowledge to get into trouble and this machine does not come with a manual nor a reboot disc. I wish there were third party manuals like 'Chlilton automotive" for gateway products. Called cust svc for help and they told me to 'cost per call' line! Sure made me feel good about gateway products.
This unit comes loaded with Vista home premium (ugh). With XP, I wrote letters and then faxed them. Nada, with Vista. I need the business version of Vista. A bit cheeky I thought."

Still Nervous!04/11/2009
By Indyguy101from Indianapolis
What's great about it: Fast, great tv-card What's not so great: Video card, service
"Brought the 1st one home, updated all drivers/patches, etc, loaded Race 07 (minimum system requirements well below what this machine has) and it immediately starting crashing. Loaded Need for Speed Prostreet, same problem. Bought new HP monitor, new Logitech Momo wheel, still crashing. Ended up more than 4 hours on phone to GW, one tech says try one more thing, if it doesn't work send it back. It doesn't work, call GW to get address, the next tech says "it's your games, not our pc". I hang up, call again and the next tech says send it back. I boot the pc the next day to delete/shred all my files, the pc won't start, get "ntldr missing". Next tech says "sorry, your operating system is corrupted, try f8 on boot". Still doesn't help so I return it to BB and now are working on 2nd pc.
Crossing my fingers as so far, so good. btw, to send this back to GW would have cost $98 via UPS Ground."

Slick Machine03/31/2009
By ads2k2
What's great about it: Worked right out of the box, no problems What's not so great: A little Bulky
"Before working in IT I built all of my computers. Now, I just want to go home and have everything work, not only work, but work fast. I also like to have everything interconnected. I put a tv tuner in my last machine and spent months tweaking and setting everything up just the way I wanted it. But I had issues burning through HDD space and getting things to play back on my xbox 360. With this machine, I plugged all the cords in, turned it on, turned on my xbox and voila! It just works. I was originally concerned about this unit in particular because of all the negative reviews. It seems to me that there are some gateway units that were shipped with defective hardware. When the sales associate assured me that if within the first 30 days of owning my machine anything went wrong I could just take it back to them and not deal with Gateway it sealed the deal. Now I love this machine. It can handle everything I've thrown at it, so far. I was a little nervous about moving to Vista too, but on hardware like this, it's smooth as silk. The included remote was a nice little bonus too, my old machine needed to have all the remote functions programmed in manually, this one just worked. I can't say anything bad about it yet. It seems crammed into my old desk, but I'll live with that for one less thing to fix when I get home from work."

Stay away if the TV tuner is important to you03/27/2009
By Tuonofrom Ft. Worth, TX
What's great about it: Didn't have it long enough to assess this What's not so great: Two failed TV tuner cards
"I looked around at several computers and decided this one was the one I wanted. The TV tuner card was particularly important to me. I brought the computer home and fiddled with it for several hours before deciding that the tuner card was defective. I took it back and the Geek Squad agreed. They recommended that I swap it out for another identical unit. I did, and they couldn't get the TV tuner working in that one, either, so I got my money back.
I'll look for a good, upgradeable computer and install a tuner card myself. I'll probably buy from Best Buy, since they were good about taking this one back.
Too bad it didn't work for me. It was just what I wanted."

Terrible Support from Gateway03/24/2009
By RichardSCfrom SC
What's great about it: Price is Good on the surface What's not so great: Gateway's Total Lack of Support After the Sale
"The computer is OK. It's fast and quiet. But if you need support from Gateway, buy another brand. This is my fifth Gateway but it will be my last. There was no documentation on the PCIe TV tuner card and Gateway said I had to talk to the manufacturer. The tuner has no Clear QAM tuner so you'll need an antenna to get any HD or digital stations and the ATSC tuner couldn't receive even one digital, off the air channel when using the same antenna in the same location that my teeny Pinnacle USB mini-stick tuner receives 8 stations on.
Then the Windows Explorer right-click to "Send To Mail Recipient" function in Vista stopped working. That's the function that allows one to select multiple photos, for example, then compress them and automatically open a new email and attach the files. It's very useful for emailing photo files. It worked on this computer for a couple of weeks then stopped working. I did all the research on Microsoft's website and various forums but the suggested fixes didn't fix the problem. Well, Microsoft won't provide any support because Gateway installed the OS and Gateway won't help unless I PAY for telephone support. Gateway said, "Your query requires high level support which we could not do within this type of support." This computer is only 5 weeks old. So much for support.
And all this one week after Gateway told me to take a hike when my one year and 9 day old Gateway laptop battery died. Thankfully my American Express card free extended warranty covered the replacement.
So save your money and frustration and pass on Gateway or don't ever have a problem. Goodbye forever, Gateway."

Great computer overall03/19/2009
By Grannellefrom Tennessee
What's great about it: Just about everything What's not so great: Back up system restore files/discs
"This is an absolutely excellent computer. The processor, RAM, vid card, TV, expansion capabilities, etc., are all very impressive. 64 bit Vista is lightning fast, and the ability to multi-task is phenomenal. Not being a gamer, I can't comment on those parameters, though my wife (who is a hard core gamer) says the speed and graphics are most impressive. I purchased the Acer 23" monitor to go with it, along with a set of Insignia 3 piece speakers. Couldn't be happier.
I do have one small complaint. The back up files are supposed to be loaded on the HD on a separate partition. However, mine is missing the system restore files that are needed to re-format the drive. Quite by accident, I deleted the video driver. I can't cleanly uninstall/re-install it, although I've tried numerous times. Now I need to re-format the hard drive. When I try to view TV (I'm a big fan of the tube) via my cable box, I get a message that says no tuner hardware is detected. Since no discs are included, I'm pretty much stuck. It took several (read 12) chat room conversations and about 6 e-mail communications before Gateway would send back up discs. Now I have to wait 15 days to get them shipped. One tech support fellow was baffled as to why I didn't have either the file or the discs, and was kind enough to send them.
Other than that, this computer rocks. I highly recommend it. As long as it comes with the appropriate files and/or discs, I don't think you'll be sorry."

Wow!!!!03/16/2009
By miaminate78from Fort Lauderdale, FL
What's great about it: Fast, quiet, TV Tuner is smooth, Great at Multitasking What's not so great: Large Tower
"I'm thrilled. I bought this desktop yesterday for $779. What a deal!!! The system packs an amazing amount of memory and features. 8GB of RAM!!! The system responds nice and quick. My network hooked up in a cinch and detects a lot quicker on this system than my old one. Vista is much faster because of the Quad core. The hard drive is massive. I was able to copy all my old files via my external hard drive within 1 hour. I love the remote control and the touch sensitive media controls on the tower. What a neat feature. My old computer was loud. Vista always had it accessing. This system is nice and quiet. I also like the HDMI port on the TV tuner. Very nice to have on this price computer. Overall, I am ecstatic so far. This is an amazing value too. The ONLY con I can think of is that the tower is quite large. But I really don't mind considering what I'm getting."
