What's great about it: had a good picture quality
What's not so great: broke down after 8 months
"don't even waste your money on this. When I bought this player it was $81.99 and it broke down after 8 months wanted to charge me $50 to fix it. Best Buy guy told me they were even having problems with their demo player. Garbage..."

Decent DVD Player for Less Than $100

What's great about it: Easy to set up, good price
What's not so great: DVDs not as good as Blu-Ray, but hey - that's not the DVD player's fault. :-)
"XBox 360 went on the fritz, so while Microsoft was repairing/replacing it, we decided to get a "backup" DVD player and got this one. In addition to the normal DVD player features, this one also has a USB port on the front panel that is supposed to allow you to plug in a USB device and play/view movies/pictures on your TV from it. I never got a chance to try it, but the theory is cool!"

stay away from samsung

By runaround

What's not so great: customer service- it's nonexistent!
"I do not have this particular dvd player but within 8 months i have purchased tv and bluray dvd with surround around and had it installed by best buy. i have used the dvd player approx. 5 times and it broke down. sending it back and dealing with samsung is a complete nightmare! i am writing this as i have been on hold for a rep. for 28 minutes now! they are completely frustrating to deal with, they think nothing of having you uninstall everything you just paid to have installed and send it back, all at yourown cost! i sent the dvd back a month ago and they refuse to even look at it until i now send the speakers back which by the way are wall mounted! the speakers work fine! why is it so easy for a company to take your money but so difficult to get a problem resolved? by the way, still on hold!"

bad luck with Samsung

By Eidos

|
What's great about it: nothing
What's not so great: fails after 1 year and no support
"I have 2 Sumsung DVD players of two different models. Both failed about 14 months after first use. The failure is that both will not play any DVD and flash a message stating "Firmware Error". This is a design flaw Samsung does not address. Look at the web for "Thousands of complaints" without any solution. My suggestion is to buy another brand."

Doesn't play all DVD-R dvds
09/12/2009
By SteveV

|
What's great about it: great pix & sound
What's not so great: Didn't play older DVD-R burned discs
"After my CyberHome CH-DVD 300S finely died after years of faithful daily service, and already having hundreds of home-burned DVD-R discs, it was important to me to find a new DVD player that could play all these discs. Despite the specs, few players are capable. Both this unit and a Philips brand player I tried recently were able to play only my most recently burned discs. My older DVD-R discs, burned with an earlier Pinnacle Studio version and earlier DVD burner, would not be recognized. I returned the unit the same day."

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Does not play MP4
"Was not ready to spend $250+ on a blu-ray player so I got this instead and it works great on my 50inch plasma. Makes dvd's look better and you can even play movies from your external hdd by plugging into the usb slot. For $70 you can't go wrong."

What's great about it: cheap
What's not so great: led too dim to be visible
"The led light in the front of the box is too dim to be visible. There is no way to see the time left. You have to figure it out from number of chapters are left. No button to stop and resume at later time. Using bookmark is too cumbersome"

Very Nice!!

What's great about it: Versatile
What's not so great: Nothing!
"This is one great dvd player!!! Bought it for my dad on Father's Day because it plays divx movies. The greatest thing I like about it is the USB connection on it. Samsung won't tell you this, but I can play divx movies right off of my USB jump drive. Not only can I play divx movies off my jump drive, but they come out crystal clear and with no choppiness. I can put like 8 or 9 movies on my jump drive and watch them simply by sticking the jump drive in the USB port. That alone is worth it to me. The design of the player is sleek and elegant, which makes it look expensive. So people think it's an expensive dvd player!!!"

Samsung - bang for your buck
06/12/2009
By TANI2009

|
What's great about it: Picture quality
What's not so great: Remote control
"I've had the unit for three weeks and I've watched over twenty old dvds. (I've had the dvds over 10 years) These dvds played beautifully. Please be reminded with any dvd player it only plays as well as the dvd used. Great buy for the price. The down side to the unit is the remote control. The remote is small and it does not light up. Some buttons have dual functions. Don't let the remote stop you from purchasing the unit. Samsung - Bang for your Buck."

Worst DVD Player Every Owned
06/07/2009
By tec101

What's great about it: Decent picture quality.
What's not so great: Everything else. Freezes up during movie, won't load DVD.
"This is the worst product I have ever owned. The player froze up during movies. Then it wouldn't even load the DVD. You could hear it trying to work, but nothing. I've owned this product about 8 months. Through my extended program at the venue where I purchased the product, Samsung replaced the entire guts of the player. Samsung service directly was nowhere near as good (wanted to charge me for the repair under manuf. warranty). I have now had the player back home for about a month and it's again freezing up in the middle of the movie. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone."

Great Player

What's great about it: Perfect for an upconverter
What's not so great: ,,,
"Previous reviewer was correct with the fact that the small "zoom" icon will not dissapear when the zoom function is used, but there is an additional feature that "fits to screen", so his post about not being able to fill the widescreen is false. Player runs EXTREMELY quiet, exactly what I wanted, does everything I need it too and more. For the money and brandname trust you cant go wrong with this product. I spent $69 and I am happy."

A work in progress

By BetterDesignsInc

What's great about it: Front panel USB
What's not so great: Display is too dim to read in daylight
"Samsung hasn't thought this product through prior to production. The display brightness isn't adjustable and is too dim to see in a sunlit room. The "zoom" feature leaves an magnifier icon up on the screen when used - it can't be cancelled. This means that if you want to increase the picture size to deal with widescreen 16:9 to 4:3 format issues, you'll need to have a distracting icon up on the screen at all times. The warranty is only 90 days for labor. On the positive side the audio is very good, and picture quality is good although not much better than a regular DVD player when used with an HDTV (which upconverts to 1080P anyway). The display brightness and Zoom feature problems are fatal flaws and I can't recommend this unit."

Lots of features for a low price

What's great about it: Plays both NTSC and PAL discs. Plays AVI and MP3 from USB port. Low price.
What's not so great: Remote could be better. Had to change a default setting to get aspect ratio correct.
"I was absolutely thrilled that this unit can play my PAL discs! Also, being able to play AVI video files from a flash drive inserted into the front USB port is such a great convenience--not to mention that it will save me money on DVD-R discs. (It will also save me the time and hassle of converting the AVIs to DVD format and burning them.) In addition to video files, the USB port allows you to play MP3s or view JPEG slide-shows from the flash drive, too. The upconversion functionality is another reason I bought this unit, but I can't try out that feature until I get a new TV. For the price, I don't think you can beat this player."

Playing movies and TV shows via USB!
05/23/2009
By chinee

What's great about it: Small footprint, USB port in front, size and finish, easy to use
What's not so great: DVD Upconversion does not blow me away.
"What was I really expecting for $69? In my opinion this is just a regular progressive scan DVD player that has an HMDI output. It does produce a marginally better picture than my 5yr old standard DVD player, but it does not come close to the DVD upconversion quality from my Samsung 2550 Bluray player, or my Panasonic Upconvert DVD player/recorder. Of course, these units cost 4 or 5 times more than the 1080P9.
Although I was disappointed in the upconversion, I still gave the player 4 stars for picture quality because at this price point, it displays a better picture than a standard DVD player.
A feature that I didn't have, and never tried, before is the ability to play movies via USB. I have a few TV series copied onto an external hard disk drive that I use with my PC and laptop, and I simply plugged the HDD into the USB at the front of the unit, and "Voila!" I was watching NCIS Season 1! And the quality was great! Going forward, this is a feature I cannot do without.
It's a really small unit with a nice, simple, clean look. And if you're looking for a decent DVD player... this is for you.
If you crave near-HD... get a BD player."

What's great about it: Easy set up, decent price
What's not so great: Doesn't come with all necessary cables
"It is reasonably priced for a HD convertible player, delivers good picture quality, and It has more features than I am likely to use, including a USB port and playing mp3 files. It is also incredibly easy to set up. Easy to set up once I bought a HDMI cable that is. That wouldn't have been such a big deal except that that HDMI cables are not cheap. I don't know if other HD upconversion players come with HDMI cables, so maybe that's a faulty expectation on my part. I suggest checking the product specs on any similar players before buying to see if they do come with the cable.
If this player came with all the necessary cables I'd recommend this without hesitation. However, that omission adds needlessly to the final cost of this player and all buyers need to consider that cost when buying this machine."
