Easy set up. Manual is bad like others say but it does point you in the right direction.
This thing upconverts video from lesser sources. I hooked up my Sony 400 DVD player. To get it to upconvert from a DVD player use the component with a coax or optical audio input. This allows the video parameters to be adjusted. Running a DVD player through the HDMI is default and settings cannot be changed. The component looks much better, it will do 1080 i&p 720p 480p or auto.
I also run a macbook pro through it. To do this, use the DVR selection. This can be assigned to use any video or audio input. I used HDMI #3 and optical input #2 and named it macbook pro. it runs in 1080i and 5.1 audio. works great.
Has many assignable inputs. This is great! Also uses 5.1 to simulate 6.1 or 7.1 sounds pretty good on the 7.1 on most things.
What's great about it: Very flexible for all sources. perfect home base.
What's not so great: Manual

This unit has lots of inputs and performs well. I'm not an audiophile but it sounds good to me. I like the flixibility it offers for component hookups, with plenty of HDMI ports, etc. But the manual is AWFUL and it took me a long time to get all the features properly set up. But once I got it figured out it works fine.
What's great about it: Lots of input options, sounds good.
What's not so great: Gloss-black finish is hard to keep clean. Manual is awful. Small labels for knobs and buttons are hard to read.

Bought this unit with pricing in mind for an up to date system with technology changing so quickly, This system sounds great! esp. for the price, easy to set up using all hdmi for gaming,dishnetwork,blu-ray. Wanted to upgrade hdmi ports from my old harmon karden,Not disappointed, very user friendly,I use it as a 7.1 system man does it separate the sound better than any receiver I have owned in the past for the same pricing. The remote is not as bad as some people have mentioned I like it because of all the control you have over your entire system.Gonna keep this one!
What's great about it: Easy set up, Sounds Great!

i researched this item non stop for three days . my choice was onkyo, harmon cardon and this pioneer. so glad i got this thing. all its features inputs were perfect. ive always had sony recievers this is my first pioneer and man this thing made the speakers i have sound a lot more expensive. If anyone buys this thing you will love it. you couldnt ask more from a reciever at this price range.
What's great about it: quality of unit its self .and sound quality and appearence

I read all the reviews on this before I bought it. I can say the manual does need a little time to get through it. I would not say that it is too hard to understand, it's just a boatload of information and you will need to dedicate some time in order to fully utilize and enjoy the capabilities of this unit. I spent about 4-5 hours spread out over 2-3 days programming and setting it up. I can say it is worth the time and effort. I am running this as 5.1 normal surround for my home theater and I use the extra channel for my zone 2 outdoor speakers. Sounds like a million bucks through Def Tech Pro 1000 speakers and Martin Logan D500 sub. The MACC auto EQ set-up is fantastic! My iPod and Pandora on my wifi blue ray is amazing in the Neural THX setting for the music.
What's great about it: Great sound, great options, great for price.
What's not so great: Not exactly "plug & play"! Also, the iPod interface could be better.

Bought this a couple of weeks ago. Had no trouble setting it up. My family room is equipped with in ceiling infinity speakers. The receiver has plenty of power and sounds great. I had an older pioneer elite receiver in that room before and have to say that the sound is better and the auto-setup very good! I checked all the settings using a sound pressure meter and all was as precise as it can be. The multiple settings memory is great (I usually sit in one of 2 locations and either listen to music or watch movies)! HDMI works great and I am very happy with the sound decoding.
Only drawback is the somewhat limited way of feeding sound to the second zone - e.g. if listening to a cd using HDMI from a blu ray player it is not possible to get that signal to the second zone! Workaround is using a normal stereo chinch connection - but the extra cable should not be necessary....
What's great about it: Easy setup, great sound....
What's not so great: 2nd zone lacks some features

When it says press reveiver button it means bottom receiver button in rectangle, not top receiver button before pressing menu button, must remember which buttons control which fuctions, other than that ,just what I was looking for, after a month of searching and comparing other models best choice was finally made with pioneer hands down.
What's great about it: Just enough hookups for equiptment on hand,ie hdmi. Price on line could no be beat.
What's not so great: Just like all previous reviews, manual should be rewritten.

Avoid this item. Pioneer admitted they shipped it with a known flaw and no fixes to come! If you switch between programs that have Dolby Digital to Pro Logic the sound drops out. You have to restart the receiver and then often it comes back with no picture, requiring more restarts until it comes back to life. Avoid this item!
What's great about it: Sounds great, but rarely works right
What's not so great: Known audio and video flaws!

Just purchased today, and within 15 minutes my 5.1 setup was functioning. I had to set up my inputs which was slow due to my setup, and desires. The upscaler is super! My cable service transmits in 480i but the pioneer upscaled to 1090p and it looks wonderful. Even my Wii is good. This is only my first day so I'll be checking in again to update....
What's great about it: Setup, and GUI
What's not so great: The Absent of Outlets....

I spent four hours setting this thing up, still couldn't get it to function correctly. No sound on my bluray player on movies only on audio cds. Generally, just a pain in the rear to even try to set up. I exchanged this unit for the denon 1910 and it only took me 20-30 minutes to set up and it sounds incredible. spend the extra $40 and get a better unit.
What's great about it: calibration is good.
What's not so great: manual, subwoofer support

had this unit shipped home since i couldnt find one locally. upgraded to this receiver from a sony str-dg710 and must say it was quite an improvement. dolby hd and dts hd were a must for me since i bought a blu-ray player. the sound blew me away. the auto calibration feature works great and automatically sets the speaker size and distance from the listening area. the on-screen set up it great. it works with an hdmi and not only a composite video cable like many have stated in their reviews. my receiver manufacture date was jan 2010. each input can be renamed to the liking. i thought the manual was farely simple to read.

After looking at ton of reviews and recommendations I settled on the getting the Pioneer over similarly priced models from Yamaha, Denon and Onkyo.
The only problem was in finding one, as this is a popular model that seems to be sold out everywhere. But, as luck would have it, Best Buy's new product widget on the web site indicated that one of my local stores had it in stock -- and sure enough it was right, as I spied one lone 1019 all boxed up and sitting lonely on the shelf. Nice new inventory widget, BB, got a fan here.
Past reviewers have been spot on about the manual. It makes good reading -- and re-reading (over and over again). After a month, some of it is starting to make sense, but it's not for the faint of heart.
Also, I have found reviews about the sound quality are also correct. The thing just rocks. It will make bottom feeder speakers sound decent -- decent enough that you'll want to replace them (if you had them like I did) with new ones.
The setup and iPod connectivity sold it to me. The GUI is very nice. Setup is not for the impatient, but there are a ton of forums where you can got some serious hand holding if you need it. For the $$ the Advanced MCACC can not be beat.
Now that newer models have been announced, look for it to be discounted, turning a great deal into even a better one. Grab 'em while you can.
What's great about it: Sound Quality, iPod Support, GUI, Features, Price
What's not so great: Horrid Manual, Cluttered Remote, Confusing setup options

This is an awsome receiver, much better than I expected. I first bought the Yamaha rxv-665 7.2 receiver and was extremely disappointed with the sound quality and mostly the surround effect, it was just garbage. So I returned it and got the pioneer, got it set up and tuned right and I absolutely love it! It really woke up my blu ray and Xbox and gave an incredible surround experience! I have never had or heard one of the "top of the line" receivers, but for the average person wanting a good surround system with plenty of features I will recommend this ALL day long!
On the down side as most people have said the manual is impossible to understand and doing the adjusting and fine tuning can be hard to figure out. So with that being said I would not recommend this for a beginner or someone who wants a quick and simple surround system.
What's great about it: The sound for the price and more features than I will ever use
What's not so great: The manual is about useless and setup can be a little tricky

I have had this receiver for over a month now and all I can say is that I am stunned. I amimpressed by the sound-quality and features. I have played all kind of music (classical, metallic, rock, pop, 80's, concerts) and sound intense movies (U571, we were soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, Das Boot) on this receiver and it handles all pretty well.
Ipod feature is just so useful to stream music directly from web or other PC. Why pay $100 extra on other receivers to get this feature. Before buying I compared it to other receivers in same range and higher price range. For most people who are not those super-picky audiophiles this receiver is just the right one! There was only slight difference that I could feel when listening to $1000+ receiver.
The only feature that I wish it had is WiFi connectivity, but for now my Iphone is serving as the streaming device :) Manual can certainly be improved to help the users in understanding and using all the great features this device has. Also, a couple more HDMI ports would hurt either :)
What's great about it: Sound quality is just stunningly rich and beautiful! Powerful sound and tons of features make it a remarkable receiver.
What's not so great: Some features are complicated to understand and manual is not so detailed either.

This receiver replaced a ten year old ES Sony receiver. The sound from the Pioneer 1019 has made it an easy transition. This receiver plays music 30% of time with the balance HDTV, all through 5.1 Mirage speakers.

I was looking to upgrade from a 4 year old Pioneer which was giving me center channel issues. Wasn't sure what the problem was, but wasn't looking to repair the old school unit with no HDMI connections. We just got a BD player as well, so we were limited on the experience. I started looking about two months ago at BB. I came across a Yamaha open box RX-V665 and was able to get it for $150 off shelf price at $350, so not a bad deal. We gave it a go and were not pleased with the sound quality. The unit sounded tinny compared to my Pioneer. Regardless of settings and options, I couldn't get the rich sound I had before.
We took the Yami back and I decided to stop nickle and diming myself and go for a mid range receiver from the Magnolia offerings. (Hang in there for the Pioneer 1019AH review) I've always been impressed with the Onkyo reviews and appearance, so we gave the TX-NR807 a spin at $999. Wow - this unit was great. I learned that my speakers were being underpowered by the previous Pioneer at 75W/Ch as the Onkyo cranked at 135W/Ch into my Energy wall mounts rated to 135 as well. Didn't even dawn on me that it could be this good with the right power. I also loved the sound and video processing and on screen volume indicator. HOWEVER.... As indicated by previous reviews of the NR807, there is a clicking which occurs not only when you change sources, but when you are watching TV and it changes from commercial to commercial to HD program, etc. Depending on the audio format, the receiver will correctly adjust, but it makes a pretty loud click in the proccess. This was a show stopper for my wife. There were also other features, or premiums really, which I didn't need on the unit such as the ethernet connection. I can play Pandora internet radio through my Samsung BD player, so I had double the capability - not worth it. Bottom line was, I really couldn't handle the price tag of the unit even though we were mostly in love with it. It simply wasn't enough value for the money. So back it went and the search continued.
Upon further review, I returned to the Pioneeer stable and found the VSX-1019AH specs and reviews. While not at 135W/Ch, it comes in at 120 and also has a pretty cool Ipod cable which works nicely in lieu of a separate dock. Even charges the Ipod while connected. I decided to go for it. Finding one in my area was difficult. Nothing on the west coast, so I wound up going east. This was bittersweet as I assumed the fewer they had, the more popular the unit was - a good sign. Not only did I find a store which had a couple, I found an open box item and was able to get it for $440 instead of the boxed $510. Always looking for a bargain even though home theater is my primary form of entertainment.
Set-up was a little easier than my 4 year old Pioneer, but was not intuitve as other reviews have mentioned. The remote is pretty horrible and actually a step down from the 4 year old model. After the MCCAC auto EQ was done, it sounded pretty good for the money and power. A definate upgrade from the old Pioneer, having HDMI connections, increased power, Ipod cable, and nice piano black appearance (kind of Elite looking). I still need to reset the speaker selection from large to small front speakers. I'm not sure why the MCCAC decided to make the small speakers large, but I tend to like the crossover of bass to the sub if possible, but still tinkering.
I think the sound is better having all the right connections now, but to be honest it's hard to distinguish at this level of performance. How much better can 7.1 really be given the technological advances of the day? We have to pay a much higher price for a relatively small improvement in gain. I can say that the sound tone is much better to my ear than the Yamaha I demo'd but similar to my old Pioneer, although seems more dynamic thanks to some advanced codecs. I'm pleased.
On the video side, some disk sources seem grainy while others sharp as a tack which, to me, says the equipment is working as well as the material its given. Upconversion seems capable.
The lousy remote issue became pretty irrelevant anyway. Having the HDMI connections running through the receiver, I was more motivated to figure out the Harmony 880 remote I got a few years ago. It took a few hours, but was able to get everything tweaked pretty well between by Panasonic AE900 projector, Samsung HD tuner, Samsung BD player and Pioneer receiver. We have gone from 4 remotes down to 1. Anytime I need to make any adjustments, I simply pull out the original remote and then back it goes.
I am really satisfied with the Pioneer. In the end, I upgraded primarily for connectibility to HDMI, Ipod connection and increased power. I hope to get enough years out of this unit so I can make my next upgrade a 1080P projector from my 720P I have today (which still rocks).
What's great about it: Loaded with features and power
What's not so great: Remote is lame for this era

This product is great. I was looking at buying a higher end Sony STR-DA4400ES. I am very happy I didnt. This one does everything the other one does just as good and for cheaper. The sound quality was live changing. I went from an 8 year old Kenwood boxed 5.1 surround sound system receiver to buying a full 5.1 Klipsch Reference speaker setup running on the old Kenwood reveiver. I finally upgraded the brain of my system, the receiver, to this new Pioneer. Wow.
The setup can be a little confusing, but I figured it out fairly quickly. One thing I can say i am not too happy about with it is this. I have my computer hooked up to my 52" and I wanted to run switching through the receiver. I have an DVI to HDMI running for picture and composite for sound. I couldnt run them through the recever and get them synced to the same input. Only certain inputs in the Pioneer will allow output to the TV through the HDMI....boo. No worries, my set up is good, I have a harmony remote and it controls everything on its own
A must have receiver if your in the market!!!
What's great about it: Sound quality is unbeatable, great sleak look, price is right.
What's not so great: Difficult setup for non tech savvy, cant have all my equipment controlled with this unit
