I picked up this TV a few weeks ago when it was on sale for $499.
The picture quality is stunning, and effectively indistinguishable from a 1080p plasma if you're more than 5 feet away from the unit. It accepts 1080p signals which look great. The TV also does a very good job of upscaling standard old-style tv signals (which become stretched to 16x9 by default). Sound is reasonably good, though it does come out the back of the tv.
It should be noted that the only audio out is a digital audio connector (a.k.a. fiber optic). This is great if you have a modern surround sound audio/video receiver, but a drag if you don't. Of course, the receiver can always grab audio from the cable box/dvd player/etc. Audio out volume level is fixed (it really should be a viewer-selectable option).
As has been noted by others, the Viera keys on the remote are totally and utterly useless.
What's great about it: Picture quality
What's not so great: No vga/dvi in, plasma screen is essentially a mirror

This is my first HDTV which was purchased Nov. 6th. I had shopped a long time looking for the right HDTV with the right price for my family. I read dozens of reviews on different brands. But when I saw this 42" Panasonic Plasma on sale at Best Buy for $498 the search was finally over!! It has worked great right out of the box. Easy to set up. Picture quality is great! I had my Dish Network upgraded to HD channels the same week. I am completely satisfied with this TV. I also purchased a Panasonic Blu-ray dvd player to complete the set-up. Love it! Thanks BEST BUY!!
There is plenty of volume when watching TV channels, but you have to increase the volume quite a bit when you watch a dvd. But this is really not a problem because everything else is fantastic.

We got this on a Best Buy Deal of the Day so the price was fantastic. We use it in a bedroom so getting a 720p vs a 1080p wasn't an issue for us. The picture is great, set-up was easy enough that my husband could do it with only the help of our nine year old. I'm not sure if the number of HDMI inputs (slightly less than some other models) will be enough in the long run but given the price, we think it's a great tv for our purposes. Overall, extremely happy with the purchase.
What's great about it: Excellent Price, great picture
What's not so great: No negatives at this point

This was a daily deal for Best Buy. The only real difficulty was finding a store that had it in stock as it wasn't delivered as a daily deal. The Best Buy in King of Prussia had it...which not as convenient as the one in my home town, I was able to stop after work and bring it home. The tv is a wonderful size for our den. The plasma looks great in our low light/indirect light den. The picture on HD channels is beautiful. It's so good that my husband that goes to bed every night religiously at 10pm stayed up to after midnight watching a soccer game it was such a great picture. He didn't want to switch to the bed room 19" tube tv!! Video games come to life on it. We have had zero issues with picture quality. The sound isn't bad, but we immediately hooked it up to our speaker system. It is very light weight to move, easy to setup, and the stand is very very sturdy with a large base that screws into the tv. No complaints here!!!!!
What's great about it: Great picture. Very sturdy stand. Lots of inputs. Great size for the den. Excellent in a low light room. Vibrant colors.
What's not so great: Speakers are pretty good out of the box. But we hooked ours up to our speaker system.

Paid 498 for this tv on internet only special. Unbelievable picture for this price. I've looked at tvs' that cost much more that don't seem any better to me.Was nervous about buying a plasma instead of an lcd but I think the picture is better. A little darker but much truer to real life. On non hi def channels the picture is so good it's tough to tell it's not hi def, unlike the lcd tv I have were the non hd channels look horrible. Only complaint I have is at certain angles sometimes light reflection can be a problem. 90% of the time it is not though.
What's great about it: Set up was easy, great price
What's not so great: Light reflections off the screen

Great picture to price ratio, even sitting five feet away from it, it still has 1080P-like images even though it is 720P!! Blu-Rays are what need to be shown on this television as they look BEAUTIFUL!! **HIGHLY RECOMMENDED**

I guess I am biased due to my Samsung 50". This is a good TV for the price ($400), but the features and picture quality and not near as good as my Samsung. I would buy another for this price understanding I am getting a good deal for what if offered, but I would not expect top quality picture or sound.
I had a constant buzzing from the back and when I asked at the store they said the Panasonics all do this without a UPS hooked to them. Thought they were full of beans, hooked up the UPS and it stopped? Same power source as my other TV's and they did not do this. Extra $80
It is a great second TV for the den of basement.
What's great about it: The Price
What's not so great: Picture and constant buzzing for the back

I was very apprehensive about plasma tv until I did my research. This has been a great product and has great picture quality. I have no lag time on screen on image processing. Picture is super clear and crisp. I would like more of a vivid picture and a few more features such as more HDMI ports. Other than that 600hz processor is amazing.
All of the scare about plasma is that, scare, Plasma IMHO just as good or better than LCD. Fantastic Product.
What's great about it: Clear Picture, Fantastic Design
What's not so great: Could be a bit more Vivid

I purchased this TV because it was a "Deal of the Day." When I brought it home, however, I found out it was defective. It had a 2-pixel tall line going across the middle. The line would not show up until the TV had warmed up for about 10 minutes. I took it back and found out that the store was out of them. They were awesome, though, and let me purchase the Insignia 42" plasma for the same price ($490). I actually like the Insignia way better. My recommendation is to go with the Insignia instead--it has a clearer picture in my opinion.

the price point on this set couldnt be better. after setting the tv up we were very surprised and pleased with the picture quality. this was our first plasma and we love it. we spend more time in the play room watching this tv than ever before.

I just purchased this tv last week ($499). i had searched everywhere and almost purchased for 599. After setting up my cable through HDMI, and xbox 360, it looks awesome. I watch sports and play my 360. I have a lamp across the room and the "reflections" are a non-issue, even at my lamps highest setting. The lack of a 3rd hdmi or pc hookup wasn't important to me, so i give this tv a 5 because of the value. I would have paid 599 and still been satisfied. Great for those on a budget!

This is an Excellent TV. I have a top of the line Hitachi 50 inch LCD tv and I think this picture is better. Set up was a snap and the picture looks great from the moment I turned it on. The sound is good as well, I'm watching it with the sound level at about 10 to 15 so I have a lot more volume available if I need it. And at $498.00 nothing else comes close. I'm verry happy.
What's great about it: Great Price, Easy set uo, Excellent Picture, Good sound
What's not so great: Nothing so far

Bought this tv 11/06/09 on sale for 498.99! Am thoroughly impressed so far. Picture is outstanding and compares with models costing hundreds more! Would defintely recomend this tv. The only partial drawback is it only has 2 hdmi jacks. Other than that, awesome!

After weeks and weeks of comparing LCD and plasma, I saw this price for 42 inches and couldn't pass it up. Couldn't be happier with the product. Have not got the HD connected yet, but honestly I have never had HD before and the picture on this seems closer to HD than regular. Unlike the LCD's which give you extremely bright color, this TV actually looks realistic and I love it. If you are hesitant about getting a plasma, don't be, the prices are too good to pass up and the picture is incredibly refined. And with the money you save buying a plasma, you could pick up an inexpensive surround sound if needed.
What's great about it: Clarity on football games
What's not so great: Sound

I own 3 LCD TV's: 47" 1080P, a 42" 1080P, and a 32" 720P. I have always read that Plasma's are great for movie viewing and that is exactly what I needed this Panasonic for. It is the first Plasma I have ever purchased and the picture quality is unbelievable. For those of you out there who think that that 1080P is necessary for the true BluRay experience on televisions that are 42" in size or smaller, I used to be on the same boat but not anymore. Playing the same movie using the same BluRay player on both my 42" 1080P LCD and this Panasonic 42" Plasma 720P, trust me when I tell you that the difference cannot be seen. And yes, I do have 20/20 vision due to modern medical technology. This Panasonic Viera series TV truly does an awesome job with anti-glare when it comes to hot light sources in a room. I would recommend this Panasonic to anyone.
What's great about it: Great price, awesome picture.

This is an amazing plasma TV! Right now the Best Buy online price is $498 but the in store price is $599 (on sale. Normally $699). This TV would be a great deal at full price but at the sale price it's a steal. By the way, the stores will price match the web site price. Bright clear picture. Great sound. Regular (non HD) channels look far better on this set than on LCD sets. The last reviewer said it looked poor right out of the box. I think Panasonic has the default settings (contrast, brightness, color, sharpness, ect...) set rather low. A couple minor tweaks and this set is super sharp with amazing colors!
What's great about it: Picture, sound and price!
What's not so great: Haven't found one thing bad about it!
