With the HDMI inputs & HDMI out, this receiver does an excellent job of consolidating all my HD audio/video components so I can run 1 HDMI cable to my television. The upconvert feature requires no additional setup and allows me to run a Wii through to the television also (as the Wii does not support HDMI). Sound quality is excellent, which is nothing new for Yamaha receivers.
What's great about it: HDMI inputs & upconversion from standard A/V signals
What's not so great: HDMI out does not seem to carry the audio signal.

This receiver is on clearance($249) at the stores for almost half the online price. I didn't think it was that hard to set up. The YPAO feature worked well, and with the manual settings you can tweak speaker and sound settings on your own. The speaker hook-ups are about the same as they have bene for decades. Nothint better or worse than expected. The buttons on the remote are small, but they do what they say they do. I basically could use it in the dark after the 2nd day of use. I also got 18 month free financing! Running a DVR/Cable thru HDMI one and the PS3 thru HDMI 2. No major problems, cept it cuts out all the audio to the TV when using AMp, everything goes thru the receiver only, still working on that tweak. Finally, local FM sounded amazing. The receiver auto searches for the 40 best signals in your area. That made setup a breeze. I was excited to get the receiver at the price I did.
What's great about it: It sounds great! Great price right now if you can find one.
What's not so great: I don't notice a lot of difference in the sound fields.

This was a replacement reciever for a older Yamaha reciever. I have owned 2 Yamaha recievers and have loved them. This receiver is more awesome because of the HDMI features. I love this receiver because one it is from Yamaha and 2 it does what it features supposed to do
What's not so great: too many buttons or options on remote control

Ordered receiver delivered to home because local store out of product. Shipping was great. Hookup & ease of use were great. Only problem were speaker connections - too small. Docking station issues also - remote works sometimes/ sometimes not. I returned Docking Station. Otherwise great receiver so far.
What's great about it: The upgraded features on this model v. the 465 are what made me choose this model
What's not so great: Speak connections suck & the remote is hard to use to control the docking station. Returned that feature.

I had purchased a Sony and one channel did not work. Took it back and obtained this receiver and have been very happy. Works well, movies and tv sound great. However, I am not getting the cable sound to pass through the HDMI connection when the receiver is in stand-by. Any ideas what I need to do to make that work? Thanks
What's great about it: Set-up was easy, speaker set up easy, works very well
What's not so great: HDMI pass through escapes me

Fantastic system for the price! This is my second Yamaha receiver as I needed HDMI connectivity for my other components. The receiver was very easy to setup with plenty of HDMI inputs for my needs as I am connecting a DVR and Blu-Ray player to a 55” LCD 1080p. The screen setup was a great feature and makes adjusting the system a breeze. I also wanted HD audio and this system has Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD. Only two negatives I found so far: 1) the user manual was difficult to understand regarding some of the feature settings and 2) the speaker connections are cheaper than the previous Yamaha receiver I was replacing. Other than that, I’m very pleased with the quality and sound from this system and would highly recommend it.
What's great about it: Easy screen setup and automatically optimized speaker setup

If you want to skip the whole review, then my headline comment is that I couldn't be happier with this Yamaha Receiver. This comes after a long saga of trying other units without success. It's easy to use and it works well with all of my other components. I highly recommend it.
Now, here's the whole story. In October 2009, I purchased a Samsung HT-AS730S Home Theater System. It never worked properly and the defect is well-known and reported on this website and others - it simply does not retain speaker settings after power down. After 2 replacements, 2 repair attempts, and a third replacement that didn't work, I am getting a full refund from Samsung. (Note - I have no complaints about Best Buy or Samsung with regard to their customer service).
I then purchased a Denon 2809CI receiver (quite an upgrade, but it was a floor model that was heavily discounted). After about 5 hours of trying to set it up and never able to output video to my Samsung LCD TV, I finally gave up and returned it. I can't say that the unit was defective, or if it was my ineptitude, but I can say that it was unbelievably complicated to use.
I purchased the Yamaha unit on a Friday night. I had video within minutes of opening the box and all the connections were very easy to make. It sounds great and has a lot of optional sound settings. After spending a little more time reading through the manual, I was able to configure all my equipment and make the remote easy to use.
There are two features worth mentioning - 1) HDMI Pass-Through - meaning that you can run your HDMI cable from the receiver to your TV, but when the receiver is on stand-by, your TV still receives it's video signal and it operates as if the receiver isn't even there. 2) The unit does an upconvert of analog video signals which is helpful to me because we have an older X-Box that has component cables that were inconvenient to connect to the back of the wall-mounted TV. I'm not sure that the upconversion is the greatest and other reviews have noted this.
One slight qualifier - when I say "easy to use", I guess that everything is relative - it is by far easier to use than the other units I tried. But, Home Theater is pretty complicated and I don't want to mislead you to think that it doesn't take a little bit of time to get the hang of some of the setup and options.
What's great about it: A great, easy to use Home Theater Receiver
What's not so great: Analog Video Upconversion

I opted for the RX-V565 versus the RX-V665 because I didn't have use for two subwoofers or multizone capabilities. That being said, the RX-V565 is a great receiver and it possesses everything you will need in an amplifier to bring your home theater to life. The 1080p upconversion is a real plus, the four scene modes are very useful and it is bluetooth compatible.
What's great about it: Easy to Use, Nice Price, Good Quality
What's not so great: Doesn't have multizone capabilities

I bought this receiver to replace the home theater in a box junk I had. I had a Yamaha reciever before hooked to Paradigm speakers and loved it.
I went with this 7.1, but am currently only using 5.0 hooked the Polk Speakers, it sounds great!
I can't have sub woofer, since I live in a condo building...but it produces enough low-end bass, that I have to turn down the volume during crash, bang, boom action movie sequences.
Great product....I'd highly recommend if your on a budget!
What's great about it: Produces great sound clarity
What's not so great: functions

this is a great amplifier if you know what you are doing. Some of the setting require some extensive time to get the sound just right. If you decide to have a 7.1 system, this is perfect. Yamaha always seems to deliver great results!

What's not so great: must have some knowledge of the settings.

I bought this receiver in June 09, I have now replaced it with a Sony STR-DN1000. I've always had Sony receivers they performed flawlessly but I decided to try the Yamaha becasue of some of the reviews I've seen and input from friends. What a mistake! First off the volume control is annoyingly slow and the display shows the volume level in db negatively like -30 but -20 is louder. I have to deal with this sort or inverse all day long at work, I don't want to do at home. The HDMI switching is slow and sometimes the receiver forgets what input is assigned, you actually have to uplug it to get it back in sync my wife really hated crawling behind the cabinet to turn the surge supressor off and on. A friend of mine has the same issue. Also if you crank it up to +5db the protection kick in, it not very informative it just turns the whole unit off. The Sony will give you a message that the protection has kicked in and reset when the volume it turn back down. I have the Yamaha boxed up in the garage, only 2 months use on it and don't know what I'll do with it, I wouldn't even give it to a friend.
What's great about it: The sound was excellent below half volume.
What's not so great: Volume control, HDMI Switching, Setup
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

GOT IT FOR THE HDMI SWITCHING AND LOOKED FORWARD TO THE UPCONVERSION FOR STANDARD DEF. MATERIAL. SOUND THROUGH BOSE SPEAKERS IS GREAT, MUCH BETTER THAN THE VERY HIGHLY RATED BRAND IT REPLACED. 1080 UPCONVERSION IS TERRIBLE, FUZZY, WASHED OUT COLORS, NOT AT ALL WHAT A BLUERAY PLAYER DOES FOR A DVD. HARD TO ADJUST INDIVIDUAL SPEAKER VOLUME AS COMPARED TO THE OLD RECIEVER WHICH WAS PUSH THE SELECT TO GET THE SPEAKER YOU WANT AND LEFT OR RIGHT ARROW. WELL WORTH BUYING JUST FOR THE GREAT SOUND QUALITY THO. MULTIPLE DECODER AND SOUND FIELD CHOICES MEAN A PERFECT COMBINATION IS AVAILABLE FOR EVERY TYPE OF INPUT.
What's great about it: SOUND QUALITY
What's not so great: 1080 UPCONVERSION

Upgraded from an RX-V361. Even with basic speakers that came with the V361 in a set, there is a huge improvement in clarity of vocals and it is much easier to distinguish sound coming through the rear surround. The power is a little lacking per channel for a 7.1 setup, but with 5.1 connected there is a noticable improvement in power and volume, without sacrificing dynamic range.
Unlike other reviews, I find the simplicity of the menu great for something you'll only mess around with for a few minutes at initial setup. I would prefer a little less complicated remote, button placement isn't very intuitive, but not a deal breaker in the slightest. Universal remote capability works well though.
I would have liked for the pass through capability to allow me to play alternative inputs (IE passing video from an xbox to the TV while playing something connected through auxiliary), but I have not seen that feature on recievers remotely close to this price.
To sum up, if you're looking for great sound that Yamaha is synonymous with, and something considerably more user-friendly than other models in this price range, this is a great reciever.
What's great about it: Superb sound quality from out of box state; Signature Yamaha sound; input variety.
What's not so great: Complicated remote

Purchased this receiver to replace an older Kenwood 9050 which had no HDMI connections. Driving B&W 602S3's. Was never totally happy with the sound of the B&W's, so decided to replace the Kenwood. A huge difference, especially in the center channel vocals and high end female vocals. B&W's really sound great now. Also, very important, the Yamaha passes through the audio signal to my Panasonic Plasma while the receiver is on standby, simplifying connections. as I just use HDMI connections between the 2. I have a Onkyo 604 upstairs bonus room... the Yamaha is just as good, and takes up much less space, and runs cooler, and has a better pass through. Both are good, but I'm more pleased with the Yamaha.
What's great about it: HDMI pass through while on standby mode. 4HDMI in connections
What's not so great: Manual could use some editing

I bought this unit to replace a Sony ES I had for several years. I loved the fact it has 4 HDMI inputs so it can do all my video switching and upscaling. Once I hooked it up, used the supplied mic to set up the speakers, and turned it up to watch a movie, my speakers sounded hallow. I'm using Klipsch and my old Sony had 120 per channel. It just did not impress me. I set up all the speakers manually and still could not get the sound quality I was looking for. After 2 weeks I took it back and exchanged it for the Sony STR-DG820. ( I had been waiting on the Sony STR-DH800 receiver to hit the store but chose to buy the older STR-DG820 instead due to no ETA for the 800.) Maybe everyone else had better luck with their systems but I just don't think I would recommend this one to anyone.
What's great about it: 4 HDMI inputs and that's about it.
What's not so great: Less than 100 watts per channel, confusing remote and horrible sound fields
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Overall it is an excellent receiver it has the necesary inputs, outputs, great sound and video quality for a good home theater system. Is amazing that the firmware can update via CD or DVD player with a coaxial or optical output. I have an Onkyo, Denon, Sony and Pioneer receivers that cost a lot and neither of them can updated. You can connect an iPod using a dock or using the stereo mini plug in front of it and connect wathever other portable device using this port. The YPAO auto calibrating is easy and make the correct calculation for my home theater, I make little adjustments to it in order to reach to my sound taste. It accepts whatever combination of speakers, I have small speakers in front, sorround L/R and large speakers for center and sorround back L/R (this is for the space I have in my home entertainment furniture). In conclusion it is an excellent machine. Of course the service in Best Buy is excellent too.
What's great about it: 4 HDMI inputs, Good Power, Easy to use and set up, upscaling analog video, good extras
What's not so great: Springs clips instead of Banana inputs for sorround and center speakers.

This is an easy to connect, easy to use receiver. The sound quality is excellent, the ease of use for the most part is good, and it has enough connections to run just about any type of home theater system. There are a lot of HDMI connectors as well as standard connections. Works great, doesn't run very hot, and has a nice-looking and easy to understand front display. The automatic adjustment according to speakers connected and signal is a great feature (it knows how many speakers you have connected and will adjust to dolby 5.1, dts or whatever accordingly).
The only negatives I've seen are that 1) the remote is not very intuitively designed--the buttons are small and some of the button placement doesnt seem to make much sense--and 2) the on-screen menu and display are flat-out ugly. They appear to be straight from the 1980's. Yamaha really needs to update those.
Overall it's a great unit and should be a more than adequate piece for a nice Home Theater system.
What's great about it: Sound quality is excellent; attractive and simple front
What's not so great: On screen menus are UGLY

This unit is feature packed and fairly easy to setup. I just upgraded my 12 year old sony 5.0 system a few months ago with a Samsung theater in a box, and while the sound out of that system was good, it did not offer the input selections that sarted to plague me.
I have a Media Center PC, Xbox 360 and cable set top box, all with HDMI connections, my TV only has 2 so I needed something with a lot of inputs. The Yamaha x65 series provided the inputs I needed with he codec support that should future proof the system at least for the near future.
My only problem with this unit is the lack of input assignments, my Media center PC will only output 5.1 audio over the opical connection so I need to use its HDMI connection for video and the opical link for audio, only way to do that with the Yamaha is to connect the PC to the TV via HDMI then the optical to the receiver. A pain but not deal breaking.
If you're looking for a reasonbly priced A/V receiver, this is the one to get.
Wait, there's one more bad thing about this system, it made me buy new speakers and realize what I've been missing all these years in terms of audio quality ;)
What's great about it: Lots of inputs, good power output, editable display, great sound
What's not so great: Lack of input assignment (ie: HDMI can't use optical input for audio)
I would recommend this to a friend!
