What's great about it: Great features, fun downloads, fast gps, spoken streets, easy of use
What's not so great: traffic updates would have been great, but I didn't want advertisements
"Previously owned a TomTom 920 and found the Garmin better. I never used the bluetooth or other bells and whistles the more expensive GPS offered. The Garmin gives user everything a GPS should be. Fast maps, direction re-direct, street announced, SD slot for pics or music, free custom icons of cars and other interest download via Garmin site, and reasonable price. If traffic updates had no advertisements, I would have bought the 255wt. Otherwise, save your money and buy the 255w."

What's great about it: Very simple to use and pretty accurate!
"My husband bought me this item for my birthday recently and I will never go without one again! I have found when I know where I am going there are reasons that I may not follow the guide (traffic jams and such) but I use it to go everywhere now. I absolutely love it! It's so simple to use even my 5 year old can look up the addresses in the favorites and set it for most of our daily destinations. No more need to call 411 or looking up addresses on the computer or using paper instructions from mapquest either. You can search for places by address, name or category. When I need to call a place I just pull of the business by name or category (I love this function) and it gives you the address and the phone number! Money and time saved everywhere I turn lately! Even my husband who is so anti-GPS that it took me 2 years to convince him I needed one doesn't pull off now until he sets it (even to come home, ha). He will soon have one for his truck I'm sure! I can have and will recommend this product to all my friends! I was mostly concerned about the touch screen being overly sensitive or difficult to handle (I have nails) but I have found that it is actually pretty precise! Needless to say I am won over!"

What's great about it: Its very easy to use and will be a life saver.
What's not so great: Needs more applications.
"I have had this GPS for a few months now and I do not know how i ever lived without one. My parents borrowed it to go to florida and being technologically behind (to be nice) they figured it out really quick and even called to tell me that they want one for christmas. So I will be purchasing a second one here real soon. Make sure to catch them on sale. do not ever pay full price because next week it will be cheaper. ; )"

Garmin is not worth it

"Does not have all addresses. Would not recommend. If you purchase for recreational use its ok, but that's it. I returned it and tried other Garmins and they have the same shortcomings...even their top of the line units. I then tried the Tomtom units and they seem to have all the latest map updates. It might be because TomTom uses Google Maps on their units. Anyway, I would not recommend any of the Garmin units. To test which unit is best, try to find any address in Mainland, PA. If it comes up in the GPS unit, it is worth it whether its a TomTom unit or another manufacturer. Also, with the Garmin unit you get one free update when you register it. Tom Tom gives you many more free options."

What's great about it: Wide screen, familiarity of use compared to Nuvi 200.
What's not so great: Mapping is inaccurate, updates don't help at all.
"The Garmin Nuvi 255W came with a wonderful package which inmcluded mounts and power plugs for two vehicles, at a very reasonable price, but that should have been my first clue that it was a lesser product. The incentive of the extra stuff lured me in, but I shouldn't have fallen for it. I already had left over mounts and power cord from my Garmin Nuvi 200.
I wanted the Garmin Nuvi 265WT but it was not available in the store. So I bought this one instead...big mistake. It has nice features, but those features are not important if it cannot do it's most basic function of giving clear and correct directions The default voice is harsh and unpleasant, but if you change the voice you may lose other features like voice calling out the street names. After I updated it, it became very erratic some of the Previously Found Locations changed to Chinese characters and it frequently tells me that I am on a street that no longer exists, or has not been updated to the 5 year old street on the current map. It had displayed a left turn and told be to turn right. It has shown me on adjacent street or streets parallel to the one I am on. Sometimes it will not auto correct and recalculate, and on occasion, will tell me of the next turn too late to make the turn. It cannot differentiate the directions of the one-way street. If I did not know the street in my home town, I would surely have gotten lost numerous times if I had followed the Garmin Nuvi 255W. I'd hate to use it in a larger or unfamiliar city. I plan to return this unit and purchase the Garmin Nuvi 200 which I really enjoyed, or upgrade to the Garmin Nuvi 265WT. The numbering system and the cost of the product do not have logical relationships to the product quality or dependability. The Garmin Nuvi 200 is a good buy, and I will say Goodbye to the Garmin Nuvi 255W. If all else fails, I may select a competitors model."

"This is my first GPS to use for street navigation but compared to some of my friends GPS it works great. The abilty to down load directions straight from the computer is excellent. The voice prompts and timing of them is good. You're not to close to the street before it lets you know to turn. I was disappointed that the map updates are still about a year old. But I found that this is normal for a GPS. It's easy to input addresses and to find dining and places of interest on."

"I love my GPS. I've had 2 Garmins. My husband bought me one when we moved to Atlanta. I couldn't have found anything without it. Well, it got old and outdated and you couldn't update the maps anymore. I got this one and just LOVE it. I have the male voice, Jack, and we get along great! My husband has an older version of the same model. His keyboard is in alphabetical order; boy is that difficult to input! This keyboard is set like a computer keyboard....much easier to use!!
This is easy to use and for the price, it can't be beat! You want a reliable GPS? Get this one!"

What's great about it: Easy to use touch control
What's not so great: The voice prompt needs to be softer
"This is my fourth Garmin GPS and it is great. By making some basic changes to the default settings, it is better than my older units.
I have only two gripes. The first is the voice should be better. The lady sounds like my wife when giving directions.
The next is it cannot find my home. It takes me four doors down and says it is where I live. So far it has not been wrong on other addresses but just my own home. Fortunately I know where I live."

What's great about it: Out of the box ready, no update needed unless you prefer to and good price.
What's not so great: I haven't found anything wrong with it.
"This GPS is great for it's value. I already have a indash GPS installed in my car but I had to get a portable GPS for a car rental. I personally love GPS, it's better than reading a map. For those of you looking for a GPS I would recommend this one. For the price and value it's great. If your looking for bluetooth or other features I believe that your spending too much money for one but it's personal preference. Overall it works great for me and it does the job."

"On a recent business trip I used my Garmin 255 to plot my way for about 500 miles on the road. Rather than choosing interstate highways it sent me to back roads and through towns. Didn't matter if I choose shortest or quickest route it continued to pick the dumbest route."

What's not so great: Sometimes hard to see in light, but brightness is adjustable
"The great thing about this is that you can go to Garmin.com and download free icons for driving and also free voices! They don't sound or look like cheap gimicks to visit the website either! They sound great. Personally, when I get hungry I like to drive the burrito on wheels and during christmas time, I can be a fruitcake on the road! During halloween I can be a walking zombie or a piece of candy corn. You should go check it out! I downloaded a voice called Dr. Nightmare that sounds like Darth! Just some cool features. I have absolutely no complaints about the GPS whatsoever."

What's great about it: Very easy to use, and tell u to turn before u have to, and reroutes really fast.
What's not so great: took me through little cities.
"I used my brother to go to cali, now i have to go there again, so went out and bought the same one, has some really cool features like the police station, fire, and gas stations, u click on one and it takes u there, and so on, i also used MEGELLEN, and when u make a wrong turn it wont recalculate, it will tell u to make the nerest u-turn...."

"Great little gadget for everyday and occasional vacation use. Very easy to use and has many useful features. BUT when trying to find a location in a rural area by address it has it's downfalls (will get you close but no on target), this has happend to us twice. Other than this minor downfall (which I am sure will be corrected in the future) it has become a neccesity on any and every trip we take!"

What's great about it: Display, ease of use, seemed to do what is asked
What's not so great: Nothing yet....battery life maybe. And glad I got the 4.3 inch screen vs. 3.5
"Good starter GPS, maybe a little higher priced for a "starter"....Display looked better than the Tom Tom when I was in the store. Looking to stay around $150 for a spoken-street-name GPS, but paid a little more for the 4.3 inch Garmin based on Best Buy worker's advice.
Used it on a 3.5 hr trip and it was fine. Some streets didn't show up when going WAY OFF the beaten path....but hey, it was northern Michigan back woods. It did pick right up when I came across a "bigger" street.
A fellow customer told me it wouldn't announce what lane to be in when exiting a highway....but it does tell you to "exit right" or "exit left onto I-96 west" for example.
It's my first GPS, so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I do like it so far and would recommend it if you find it on sale"

"I went back to Garmin products after trying out a Tomtom 730. The 255W does a great job with spoken street names (Tomtom does not), which was my main reason for buying another GPS. This is a good basic GPS, and if it last as long and performs as well as my other Garmin, which is still working, I'll be happy. This GPS doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but what it does have works great."

What's great about it: Accurate, fast updates, excellent map and points of interest coverage.
What's not so great: No complaints.
"I bought the nuvi 255W a day before a vacation. I'm glad that I did. This is a great companion for any road trip. The GPS update is extremely fast and accurate. You will not miss a turn ! I used the unit in a rural area of the Pocono mountains. Coverage was excellent. I am very happy with my purchase. The device is simple to use, and the software is stable and bug free.
I didn't even need to read the manual. This is an excellent product. Highly reccomended."
