Inspired by the true story of the United States Marine who volunteered to escort the remains of a nineteen year old soldier who was killed in Iraq to his small hometown in remote Wyoming, Taking Chance stars Kevin Bacon in the feature directorial debut of Oscar-nominated producer Ross Katz. Lance Corporal Chance Phelps (USMC) was just nineteen years old when he was killed during active duty. Now, as Lance Corporal Phelps is prepared for his final journey back home, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl (USMC) (Bacon) makes it his personal mission to ensure that his fallen brother is laid to rest with the proper respect. As the journey begins, Lieutenant Colonel Strobl gains a greater appreciation of the sacrifices made in war than ever before. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

One of the best movies made that year, an amazing true story that does America and our soldiers proud by telling the story of one of our fallen heroes. I can watch this movie over and over, every time feeling both pride and anguish...this movie is about the heart and soul of our country and I believe should be viewed by every American...maybe even to be played in history class in schools.

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Nothing
I served a year ago in Iraq, where I worked loading air craft’s with supply and troops. Working graves where it was dark and silent, we occasionally had to do ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. There is no greater honor than standing out in the middle of the tar-mac and feeling a since of sadness but pride of what we do, it’s hard to describe how one really feel to be part of something so honorible. I saw this movie a week after I return from Iraq. I cried through the whole movie. To see this movie and know I was part of something with great honored cannot be descried. I think this movie cannot honor our fallen brothers and sister enough. This movie put a lot of perspective in to what we as service members are doing there.

I have watched this movie a few times, and each time I am amazed at how well done it is. I have been involved in a number of funerals for military members, and it is amazing the support that this country shows for my fallen comrades, and that is exactly what this movie shows - whether it be the respect the military shows in how they treat the fallen, or how the general citizenry react.
I have read reviews talking about how it should have talked about how the war is wrong, or about the war is justified, but would take away from the power of the movie. In fact there were a couple of times where I though it was going to do just that (once I thought was going to be against the war, once for the war) and I found myself saying "Please no!" Either one of these would have lessened the impact of the movie, because whether the war is right or wrong, the country and the military show the respect to the fallen and that is how it should be.
Also most everything that Is in the movie showing how people show their respect, I have seen in real life. I have seen the Airport workers stop what they are doing and come around to show their respect, I have had people come up and thank me for being on funeral detail, I have seen towns coming together for the funeral of a fallen soldier... This a great country that has realized that it needs to honor our heros, and is doing it, and that ultimately is what this movie portrays.

What's great about it: Powerful true story expertly told
What's not so great: Not a thing
This is an incredibly powerful story, all the more so because it is true. It is very simple, really. A solider dies in Iraq, and the film details the process of accompanying his remains back to his home so he can be buried.
Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl, USMC, portrayed in the film by Kevin Bacon, volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps because he has noticed that they are from the same hometown. The real Strobl, who appears in the DVD extras, wrote the original short story and co-wrote the screenplay. He wrote the story to reflect upon the amazing outpouring of respect and emotion that he experienced from a variety of Americans as he made the journey.
The sequences early on that show the process of preparing the body to be shipped back to the US, and the preparation of the body for burial are fascinating. There is nothing ghoulish about them, as the complete body is not shown.
As he has never escorted remains, Lieutenant Colonel Strobl must be educated in the proper method of executing his duties, which is also fascinating.
The film packs its emotional wallop in the encounters that Strobl has with everyday Americans on the journey to Phelp's burial. Particularly memorable is a meeting on board a plane with a stewardess, and a scene where all the grounds crew at an airport join Strobl in honoring the body.
The end credits reveal the real Chance Phelps as a boy and young man. More footage of Chance Phelps is included in the DVD extras, which are very worthwhile viewing.

What's great about it: Good price!
What's not so great: No negative remarks at all.
As a military spouse with a husband overseas, it is soooo touching to see our servicemen treated with respect. The movie is a wonderful example how the majority of American people respect the military.

What's great about it: Engaging and Thought-Provoking
This is a fantastic and very moving film. It is not anti-Iraq-war propaganda as I had feared. Instead, it could be any war - the care and honor afforded to our fallen soldiers is the focus. This film is done in a grainy style - not Blu-Ray material by any stretch, but it is what suits the story and the imagery that needs to be shown. The biggest thing about Taking Chance is the emotion it stirs within the viewer - it makes us consider the value of our service members and if they need to be put at risk in just any engagement.

What's great about it: touches the soul
What's not so great: nothing - a great movie
I watched this movie on HBO 6 times (so far) - it is MESMERIZING.
I had no idea of the care and respect shown to our fallen military members until I saw this movie.
Keep the tissues handy; as many times as I've seen it I still choke up...
