What's great about it: Lane assist and IQ Routes
What's not so great: Can't install any updates thru TomTom HOME

"I bought this GPS to replace my Garmin 265T because the TomTom has Lane Assist, Reality View and IQ Routes. Boy what a mistake! Map updates don't work. The unit runs out of memory part way through installation. Now it says "Map Not Found". Transferring data to the TomTom via its USB cable is ridiculously slow! It took at least 5 hours just to find out the map update wouldn't install. Best Buy should not even be selling these defective products! None of these problems have ever happened on my Garmin Nuvi 265T. I've installed three map updates on the Garmin since I bought it and all have gone without a hitch. It took 1 hour compared to the TomTom's 5+ hours. Same with Garmin's firmware and software updates I downloaded with Web Updater, I've had zero problems. The TomTom 140S is a laughable answer to Garmin's Nuvi 265T. I will be returning the TomTom because a GPS unit should NEVER, EVER be this difficult to use."

"I had to drive to NY - family emergency (800 miles one way!). No one was available to ride with me. Borrowed my son's TomTom. Took me to the front door of the hospital in Manhattan AND I drove around NY as if I was a seasoned NY driver! No problems whatsoever! I calibrated the TomTom for one way to NY; then recalibrated it to come back another way - the Pennsylvania Turnpike! Wonderful piece of technology! Without it, I would not have even considered making the trip alone! I am getting one of my own in October! LOVE IT!"

What's great about it: Easy to use, easy to update, says street names aloud with adequate warning
What's not so great: Won't disable keep to highway lane warning

"I read good reviews about this TomTom and was very interested in the IQ routes as well as giving directions and street names out loud. It is very easy to use and did a good job providing the best route based on time of day and announcing turns well in advance. The demo feature and text turn by turn instructions are cool too. Unfortunately, the advanced lane guidance is overdone in my opinion. There is an option to disable the 'keep to highway lane' instructions, but I could not get it to actually disable. It works by advising the driver to "keep right" almost every time there is a turn off on a major road. It's maddening to hear about 3 times per mile or so that I need to keep right when I have another 20 miles to go on a particular road. TomTom support tried to help and had me remove the application and reinstall. But it would not reinstall properly rendering the device useless. I took it back to Best Buy to exchange it and the new device had the same problem not disabling this feature. Appears to be a flaw in the device or software. I took it back as well and gave up. If you can get past it telling you to keep right all the time, then it is otherwise a very good GPS. It doesn't do this on every highway, but it was doing it quite a bit where I live in Tampa and Clearwater, FL. I would not recommend this device solely for this reason."

"My previous sat nav decided to break down and so I purchased the tomtom The tomtom is wonderful. Its features are easy to access and I love being able to connect to my computer and pre plan routes and gain up to the minute map updates. In my opinion this is a fantastic sat nav"

"Bought the Tom Tom Thurs night. Seemed to work fine on the way home from the store, although the text-to-speech voice was not terribly clear on street names. Went to HOME to update the map on Friday and the updated map "does not operate on this model"....yes, they automatically updated my unit to a map tha doesn't work and I cannot find a solution. Spent hours on their useless help pages trying to find a way to restore the original map or reload the updated map. Still doesn't work....at all. Cannot do anything but turn on the system.

If I cannot get resolution this morning on their limited-hours help lline, I will return to Best Buy to get a different brand. hours before the trip I bought this for, I am seriously put out by this "map update service" that has rendered the GPS unusable.

This was the cheapest text-to-speech unit I could find, on sale. I guess you get what you pay for."

"This GPS so far has been good to me. At first, it was a little confusing tryign to navigate places and back, but only beacuse Ive never owned a GPS. Once I messed arond with the Menu and features, It was so simple to navigate to POI's and work around the Menu. Im using mine this weekend for our trip down to San Antonio, and im confident that this thing will be accurate and I wont get lost. I will sumbit another review after our trip."

"I bought the One 140S primarily for the TomTom reputation and the sale price. It is absolutely the best GPS you can buy! I have a premium sound system in my car and don't use my cell phone much while driving, so I didn't need a GPS that offers all the "extras" for music, phone and Bluetooth. I just wanted a top quality, accurate and dependable GPS for navigation... and this is it!
Setting destinations, routes, and multi-point itineraries is a breeze. Signal acquisition (QuickFix) is fast and the latest map data is available with MapShare. IQ Routes is fantastic! It tracks speed, time, and traffic delays and factors all that in to plot the fastest routes. The included TomTom Home software keeps everything updated and gives you access to a world of features.
If you are looking for the best GPS at a fantastic price, buy the 140 S. If you want a lot of "bells & whistles" that you will seldom use, spend much more and get a less accurate GPS!"

"Tom Tom added the IQ routes that the high end GPS units have to their base models, and this feature allows the ability to route the quickest route depending on the day and time of day. Favorites can be added and stored, which you can even store the location where you parked your car in a parking lot. Tom Tom also provides the mapshare community, where users can upload any map corrections. These corrections are verified by Tom Tom and relayed to the community. If a new map is posted by Tom Tom within 30 days of purchase, then you can update this map on your unit. The street names and lane guidance add to the great features, so that you will never miss an exit or turn. The device also contains over 7 million POI, and if we wanted to find a store (such as the nearest Best Buy), we can search for it and navigate to the place instantly."

"The advanced lane recognition is great if your in heavy traffic. This thing will go with me on every trip I ever make. I can get the closest gas station by price! That is incredible! I did my research, don't waste your time or money, buy the 140S. There are cheaper models, but you'll regret it. I know I did. I'm very pleased with this one. My wife is directionally challenged and this has helped her a ton!"

"This is a great GPS. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who wants the best quality GPS w/ complete accuracy. I've been a frustrated user of the older GPS' such as Magellan that were never accurate in giving direction, however with this one I got my money's worth.
I took this on a day-time trip from Philadelphia to the Wilmington-area and got to my points faster than expected and w/ precise accuracy, especially taking the back roads where GPS signals may not seem strong. The 140's signal was near perfect as I rarely lost reception in the most hidden areas of the countryside. Also, the lane detector feature helped us in traffic by telling us what lanes we need to stay in ahead and giving us exact diagram and description of what the lanes resemble. The speedometer accurately told us what speed we were driving and the time expected to arrive.
This also told us when to exit minutes before we needed to exit unlike other GPS' I've used. We got to our destinations accurately as well. The only drawback is you'll lose reception sometimes when you have to pick another saved destination in the GPS after powering on and off, but I noticed it's common in GPS'. Tip: just give it a few minutes til the signal picks up or drive a little til it picks up."

What's great about it: Very accurate, Speaks street names (most cheaper units don't), optional alert if you're speeding.
What's not so great: Nothing.

"I shopped around for weeks before settling on this model, and I couldn't be more pleased. So far, this unit has been completely accurate, the features are all excellent, the volume (when turned up) is loud and clear, and the suction mount is rock solid (once I realized I needed to turn the suction dial). If you're looking for a reasonably priced gps unit with plenty of bells and whistles, this one is perfect!"

"I have owned GPS units from Navman, Mio, and Garmin. My immediately previous GPS was the TomTom 130S which had been my favorite of them all until now. I just purchased the 140S. I immediately noticed an improvement in routing. The 140S took me home from the store via the same route I would have chosen. The 130S always took me home via a somewhat inferior route.

I like the advanced lane guidance (in the lower left hand corner of the screen). I have not yet seen a static image for any intersections in my area (Rochester, NY).

There are some minor changes to the menus. There is 64 mb of ram as compared to 32 mb in the 130S and 2 GB of memory as compared to 1 GB of memory in the 130S. The computer voices are different.

I am very pleased. I think the addition of IQ Routes make it well worth the upgrade.

The windshield mount does not hold as well as that on my previous Garmin. I use an Akron vent mount instead."
