What's great about it: Fairly light, sleek, 6 cell lithium battery, fair price What's not so great: Comes with Vista basic which runs a little slower, slight glare on display
"I am entering law school and I needed a lower priced laptop for class. The primary use would be using Microsoft Office in class and the internet. I have had this laptop for a month and it works great. I had a little trouble connecting wirelessly, it wouldnt read my network, but my router is a linksys, but after some troubleshooting it worked. Other than that I love it. The processer is good, I can surf the net while downloading and typing eailsy, great price too for what you get, big hard drive and light machine. Overall, if you need a laptop for basic functions and internet, I would recommend it."

What's great about it: workmanship, display, keyboard, ports, ease of use, low price, decent operating system, intel processor What's not so great: I have not had any problems with this machine at all.
"It was a tossup between a really good machine that could do gaming and extensive multi-processing, etc. versus a machine that did basic tasks well and didn't cost too much. Basic tasks well not costing too much won. Of the options available, this machine seemed to be better constructed and was priced low enough to be attractive despite the modest performance specs in comparison to more powerful machines on the market in both processing and graphics capabilities. The Intel processor is the low end of the Intel Duo Core Line. The graphics card is not considered powerful enough for serious gaming. I bought it anyway on a hunch that it would be good enough for what I intended to do with it. I was not disappointed. The build quality is excellent. The design is stylishly simple. The display is pleasant to look at. The keyboard is easy to work with. Heat dissipation is excellent, with the machine becoming only slightly warm to the touch even after hours of being on. Reading and writing to files is fast as far as I am concerned. Vista took a little getting used to because it is different from XP, but I found the experience pleasant even if I do have to research the different ways to get things done using it. I've used it to get email, open several windows at a time to do research on different topics, opened software programs at the same time as well. It handles these normal multi-processing tasks very well. I suspect it will also do normal gaming very well even though I didn't try it on that yet. Bottom line is if you want a basic machine that doesn't cost a lot of money, this makes is an excellent choice."

What's great about it: price, keyboard What's not so great: power cord & RJ45 jack should be on the back
"No complaints at all for a $399 laptop that would have been considered near state of the art just three years ago. Much to my surprise, Vista is for the most part a pleasure to use, and after an upgrade to 3 gigs of 800mhz RAM, almost fast.
After considerable deliberation, I purchased this laptop over an Eee H1000E ultra-portable, mostly due to the quite nice screen, and boy am I glad I did. Battery life isn't a big concern for me. One very big plus is the full sized keyboard with dedicated PgUp/PgDn/Home/etc. keys instead of awkward Fn+key combinations.
It runs Visual Studio 2008 and Paint Shop Pro 9 at quite acceptable speeds. HD videos seem to play flawlessly.
To minimize impact on the battery (which is guaranteed to deteriorate over time), it's a good idea to remove it whenever the laptop is being used via the power cord."

What's great about it: Great price, good performance What's not so great: display has a little bit of glare
"This is my first laptop and I use it primarily for school/online classes. I haven't had a lot of experience with Toshiba products but my dad, whose last 4 laptops were Toshibas, highly recommended it to me. It's a great basic if you're not looking for something that you're going to do tons of gaming or need strong graphics. The screen has a little bit of glare, but that's the only thing that I see as a downside, and it's minimal at that.
I'm very happy with my choice and would definitely recommend to anyone looking to buy a laptop for a reasonable price."

What's great about it: Way faster than I expected, not loaded with too much junk, great keyboard What's not so great: screen could be better, and so could the looks
"I have an HP and a DELL, and I had my misgivings about Toshiba before buying this computer.
But I was pleasantly surpised. (a) This computer was fairly quick in booting up - even though it is not a core 2 dua, but the 2.16 GHz processor speed makes a big difference. It comes with 2G memory that is good enough for Vista Basic (b) The computer ran quite cool, and hence its battery usage is fairly good (approx 3+ hours after tweaking the battery optimization settings). SInce the processor is a single core, so it has got lesser components on the same chip. which helps it run cooler, even though it has a higher speed. (c) one of the best things about this computer was the keyboard, it was very very soft touch. I really loved it.
Cons: (a) Screen could have been nicer (but I am just nit picking here it was fairly good). (b) it is fairly plain looking, and does not have a built-in webcam.
But it sure does the job well."

What's great about it: Excellent speed for the price What's not so great: Glary screen, Vista annoyances
"A sudden need to replace my newly dead 8 year old Celeron based laptop brought me to this purchase. Initially I balked at moving to Vista but the $400 price and dual core processor nudged me. I had ruled out those puny XP based "not"books. Thus far I'm very impressed. I wanted a dual core processor and this system was only $20 more than a nearly identical Celeron based system.
After turning off most of the eye candy and useless animation (best performance setting) the baby flies. Watching videos on Youtube were hit or miss on the old notebook while Hulu or CBS were non-starters. This computer handles them no problem over my 1Mb DSL or WiFi.
The speed is also quite evident as I install software and when I use a Java based planetarium application.
I'm not to fond of the DVD drive location as it can hit the mouse or your hand when ejected. But that's a quibble. I do some windows and java development on this laptop as I did on the notebook it replaced. Performance is no problem even with Vista's memory requirements.
I suspect this system will fulfill the needs of all but hard core gamers or those using intensive graphics apps."

What's great about it: PRICE, size, speed What's not so great: glare on screen, mouse
"my husband and kids all got a dell laptop for christmas. That left me without. We went to best buy and saw this decided to go ahead and get me one since it was so cheap. I rally like this laptop is cheaper looker than the dell that my klids and husband have but works justr as well. Aside from the look I really do not like mouse that this laptop has. Also the screen has a really bad glare.
Overall though that would be the onbly thing that I dislike I about it."

What's great about it: Easy to use What's not so great: Nothing yet
"Just bought the Toshiba laptop and am very happy so far. The Best Buy salesperson talked me into purchasing this computer rather than the one with Celeron Processor. He also recommended that I purchase the Best Buy virus software rather than use Norton (which was already installed). Anyway, I spent more than I expected so I'm hoping for a good experience. This is my first laptop and my first time using Vista. This computer is easy to set up and use. I'm looking forward to using it for work and for travel."

What's great about it: Great price, good basic laptop What's not so great: Couldn't hold a wireless connection
"I had this laptop for one day and thought it was exactly what I needed: no frills I wouldn't use, light, great price, nice screen clarity, basic operating system, quick to boot and operate. Then it began dropping connection to my wireless router sporadically, and/or dumping my WPA key. I never knew, when I established a wireless connection, how long it would last or how fast it would be. The problem was especially bad on battery, and worse still on Power Saver and/or as the charge level got lower. Toshiba was no help, advising me to change a power performance setting for the adapter. Didn't help at all. Ended up returning this model and getting a nicer Toshiba, with the Intel wireless set. Seems like lots of folks have good luck with this model, I just wasn't one of them."

What's great about it: You can not beat this unit for the price. What's not so great: The only con I find is relatively short battery life.
"I have bought 2 of these in the last couple of months. We have gone wireless and have done away with desktops. The screens are gorgeous and they are fast. I do a lot of photo work and they handle the graphics (8-10 mb files) quickly and with good color rendition."

What's great about it: Great price, fast , easy to set up , duel processor What's not so great: short battery life
"I have been shopping around for quiet some time for a nice, Cheap laptop. I new that I wanted at least 2 gb and a duel core processor. I found it in this Toshiba Sattelite! It has a nice large screen , pretty fast and seems to have no problems with whatever i do on it. I have no problems with Vista. After going thru the grewl of learning the new system on my home pc , I will now never have Xp again. Vista is soo much better!! I have had this laptop about 1 month now, so far so good. Great value for the money! The only negative thing I can say is that I would like the battery life to be longer. It seems to last about 1 day, whether I am using it or not."

What's great about it: Good memory, plenty of of space, comfortable keyboard, cool What's not so great: Speakers are quiet
"I bought this for my writing and general work (WordProcessor, celtx, email) and it's been an excellent machine. No problems at all. I've streamed some music and movies well enough. The speakers are not the loudest - which obviously that's not the focus of a laptop (my wife has a Compaq and the sound is much louder). I've recently had to use this for work and it runs Photoshop, Indesign, Flash, Dreamweaver and Flash - CS4 - all really well. Naturally it's not as fast as my workhorse desktop but that's not it's function. I will upgrade the RAM soon and am considering installing Ubuntu w/Win4Lin. But at this moment Vista is running fine and I have no real complaints."

What's great about it: Great Machine for the Price What's not so great: Volume Wheel on front does not work
"I bought this machine to replace my 6 year old Toshiba Laptop that is still working and never had a problem and giving to my 4 year old. This machine is geat and Vista boots up much faster than my old XP machine. Not that much junk ware. You can add 2 GB of RAM for less than $40 (Which I did). I use it basically for Web Suffering and Microsoft Office (I installed Office 2007). The machine is solid and the display is great. The Hard drive is 250 GIB which I have niot seen at this price and the unit has an Intel processor. I use the volume adjustment on the SW side since the volume wheel does not work"

"Bought it 2 weeks ago. No problems with wireless internet as some of the reviewers suggested. I also made a recovery disc set....dont forget to do this just in case ur laptop gets infected with virus or a system crash. It is self explanatory and is under the toshiba folder within program files. Lovely monitor....very good speaker.
I have no complaints so far...
I would definitely recommend to buy this if you are using for personal use and not for a computer science engineer...for which i guess u will need more RAM than 2 GB.
great deal...way to go best buy...three cheers!!"

What's great about it: Price. What's not so great: Its not the fastest computer on the block, but, it only cost $399.
"For the value you probably won't find a better deal. I wish it would have had a bit of a faster processor, but its not bad especially considering the price. If you get a much faster processor your price goes up by $200. Could always use more RAM, but that can be quickly upgraded for about $50 or so.
If you are a value, bargain shopper like me and don't have a lot to spend on a laptop as a second computer this is certainly the way to go. You won't find a much better deal.
I've had it for less than a week, but so far so good. I've streamed 3 movies from netflix on it with no trouble what so ever."

What's great about it: Price, Intel Dual CPU, Very Compatible with Ubuntu 9.04 What's not so great: Vista, Vista, Vista, Trial version of Office
"I bought this laptop when my trusty IBM R40 fail to boot or even enter Bios while I was on a business trip. So I went across the street from the hotel and got this laptop. My experience with computers has been mostly XP based but, I do have some more recent experience with Linux based operating systems. I found Vista hard to navigate and very annoying with all the pop up when running and installing programs. A lot of programs I downloaded that were suppose to be Vista compatible simply would not work once installed. So after a week of trying to use Vista I decided to toss it. I downloaded and Installed Ubuntu 9.04 right over Vista. Install took less than 30 minutes. All hardware works flawlessly. With Ubuntu it come preloaded with Open Office, a fully functional office suite that is almost 100% compatible with all Microsoft Office formats. I don't know why Microsoft felt the need to try and replace XP. I loved XP. This computer is an amazing deal from Best Buy, you can't beat 399 everyday price."

What's great about it: Linux-friendly, portable, nice bright display, media buttons What's not so great: Emits high-frequency noise, ports in awkward places, touchpad a little too sensitive, weak speakers
"--COMPATIBLITY WITH UBUNTU LINUX 9.04-- THE GOOD: Able to be dual-booted; wireless, volume control, and media buttons work perfectly. THE BAD: Graphics driver: poor brightness control; you may need to install xbacklight from the repository. When paritioning the hard drive, you may need to parition it manually, or else you'll only get 2G for Linux (I don't konw why, but if you do parition it manually, you won't destroy Vista). Dont't know if this is a general Linux probem, but switching users GUI to GUI crashes the system. DON'T SWITCH USERS!
--OVERALL-- THE GOOD: I considered the 17" version, but it was more spendy and a lot less portable (something to consider, since I'm a college student and all). This laptop is a good balance between a large display and portability.
The case design seems very sturdy. When I tested it in the store I noticed I wasn't able to bend any part.
The battery is difficult to get out.
THE BAD: These problems don't really overshadow the good, but just thought you might like to know about them.
Sometimes the laptop will emit a high-frequency tone (possibly the hard drive). It's not very noticeable, but it is a little irritating.
The touchpad buttons are very loud when I press them. They touchpad is also very sensitive.
The speakers are very weak. I was letting some friends watch a TV show online and they kept asking me to turn up the volume, event though I was at full volume.
------ Overall, this is a very good laptop. I was just being the devil's advocate for the problems listed. People complain about the battery life, but the battery life seems pretty standard for laptops. I'm able to sit through a lenghty lecture and have a little juice at the end. Fingerprints are a complaint, but I simply carry a cloth and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and that takes care of that."

What's great about it: value for money, solid performance, quiet fan What's not so great: basic look, no character, right left click buttons are cheap
"We have owned the product for 1 month and are very pleased with it. It works well,. It has better speakers than our other Toshiba laptop. Battery life is average for this price point of computer. I would buy it again.
The only other strange feature is that it will not warn you when the battery is fully empty and it will just turn off. There is no warning beside the little icon. Our other Toshiba laptop will beep when it is about to expire."
