What's great about it: Insight maps, ease of use, detail it gives you and customer support
What's not so great: zero so far - does everything it is supposed to do very well, is as advertised
1st, is an awesome piece of electronics. Had it for about 2 weeks and it did start losing the bottom, would come and go. I emailed Lowrance tech support and no questions asked, they immediately mailed me out a new transducer. Hasn't lost bottom again.
May be a little priceier than a Humminbird, but if you want side imaging and downscan - get the Lowrance. It's like having an underwater camera down there if you get the optional LSS-1. Humminbird uses a software solution for their down imaging, the LSS-1 option has it's own transducer and is a hardware solution - much better.
I got the inland lakes ma[p, was actually my main justification of buying a new one as my old one had gps, but no maps. I kept reading about map upgrades you can buy - to be honest, I don't see why I would need anything better. I fish primarily 2 lakes, Woods Reservoir and Tims Ford Lake. I was thinking I would have to mark the areas with stumps and hazards - nope, the Insight maps has had every hazard marked on it already - from small areas with stumps to really shallow water where you wouldn't expect it - I personally could not ask for anything more unless they went ahead and marked all of the honey holes for me. Setting up routes and adding waypoints could really not be any easier. Having never used one before I sat down and had my route set up in minutes (I am new to tims ford and don't know it that well). I honestly would never own a boat without a chart plotter again.
I was a tad hesitant buying this from all of the bad stories I had read about their customer support - I am glad I got this one. I called them once when I 1st got it with a question - took about 3-4 minutes until I was talking with a tech. I emailed them about losing bottom, figuring they would walk me thru a million things 1st - nope - they apologized it was not working right and sent me out a new transducer the next day.
I am buying another one when i get the money so I will have one for side imaging/downscan and the other one for my regular sonar and charts. Obviously would be great if you could get the 8" screen or better. I am hoping I can save enough to get the 8", if not, I am buying another 5".
Never owned a Lowrance before - so far it looks like they will have a customer for life in me. I want a product that gives me good value for the money spent and if the customer service is very good - I will come back. If it was just so-so, I would not look strictly for that brand - obviously bad and I would never buy another - Lowrance is the 1st - was customer support like it used to be in the "good old days" lol
Buy one you won't be sorry
I would recommend this to a friend!
