I have had this blu ray player for about a year now. I had it in my bedroom until recently because I got it for a low price and was skeptical of its quaility. I also had a not so great high def tv in the bedroom. I had a Panasonic blu ray player in the main room connected to my home theater that showed an amazingly great picture. My panasonic recently started having trouble playing newer blu rays so I decided to switch them out since this Sony was still playing the newer blu rays with ease. I must say, boy was I wrong about my quality concerns. This Sony blu ray player is very basic compared to the Panasonic I have but it has greatness where it counts most. It doesn't have Netflix, Pandora, or Youtube. What it does have is a great picture and the Sony produces very good high def sound. It is easy to use but took some tinkering to get it to output the high def sound format from blu ray disc. I also didn't pay as much for the Sony as I did for the Pansonic. That means that you get bang for your buck with the performance this player puts out. In the end, I am impressed with this Sony. I would recommend it to anyone.

I've had this blu-ray player since May of 2009 and I've not had any issues with it whatsoever. The picture quality is outstanding and it is quite easy to use. Strange thing is, most blu-ray players have to have periodic firmware updates to be able to play newer blu-ray discs as the technology continues to improve, but I've had it for more than a year and I've yet to have to download any updates. I have bought quite a few blu-ray discs, when a movie is released, and have had no problems with them playing. In my eyes, that is superb!!! I see others who have problems with theirs and the only thing I can say is it is like anything else, no matter the manufacturer or model, you'll always find good and bad ones. Some just have a lot lower percentile of bad ones and I can only talk to what mine has been.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Good price
I bought it as an open item and was afraid it would be defected, but it wasn't. For the price I paid I love it. Great picture and easy to use!

What's great about it: Clarity. Very user friendly.
What's not so great: All pluses; nothing I dislike about this unit.
I sometimes get lost in all of the lastest electronics jargon. I bought a Sony Blue Ray, connected it to my home theater and almost like magic, I have the most stunning picture I have ever seen. The picture is in a word, astounding. The sound is nothing like I have ever heard before. It is clear as a bell. I give this Sony Blue Ray a 10.

I was really excited about getting my first bluray player and decided on a Sony cause thats the brand of TV that I own. Prior to this I had a Panasonic upconverter dvd player that had to be sent in for repair and I then got this Sony, All I can say is read the reviews, and get the Geek

What's not so great: not locally repairable
Was really impressed with this unit until it quit recognizing blu-ray discs after 6 months of use. I tried to download updates to get it to work again and SYS ERR showed up on the front display. Called Sony Customer Support and to my amazment I must now pay to return unit to them for a REFURBISHED (someone else's problem child) unit. BOO!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What's great about it: great price, easy to use interface, and great picture quality
What's not so great: internals - the drive died after only 6 months of use - VERY common problem
I'll preface this with saying that my blu-ray palyer just died yesterday and Best Buy was extremely helpful in getting me a new one. They took the player for an assignment of the warranty claim and gave me a store credit to purchase a new one - which I took to purchase a new samsung with built in wireless.
The problem I had is unfortunately a common one - the drive that reads the discs failed causing a "no disc" error to happen whenever I inserted a disc - bluray, dvd, or even a firmware update CD. This bluray was only 6 months old and while it received daily use it was pretty shocking that it didn't last a year.
When it was working it was a great value player - fantastic picture and easy to use, I really was impressed with its integration with my samsung TV - but my experince has soiled my impression of this and other sony bluray products
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What's not so great: blu-ray movies slow load
Nothing much to say except excellent picture quality, well its a blu-ray what more can you expect. The BR movies load its a little on the slow side but once its starts its totally worth the wait. Overall great BD player for the price. Connected to my 42" LG 120Hz 1080p, looks amazing. Already have plans to purchase a Sony 5.1 receiver and connect it via HDMI, with my Bose speakers for total surround experience.
I would recommend this to a friend!

For the price, this basic blu-ray is great. Great picture image. Slim/sleek design. A little slow to start and load. No open/close on remote which is odd. Over-all, it enhances standard DVDs and blu-ray dvds look awesome.

I got this Sony blue-ray player on sale for 129.99. I just bought a Mitshubishi 60" DLP HDTV. This is my first blue-ray player. The picture quality is awesome. I have played regular DVD's on this player, and they look and sound superb with the 1080p upscaling. I have yet to play a blue-ray disc, but am looking forward to it when i do. The sound is also amazing, I hooked this up to my Sony surround system. It is truly an enjoyable movie experience in your home. My only pet peeves is no eject on the remote, what was Sony thinking. Also it does not turn off immediately. But for the price, picture and sound quality i could live with that.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Died after two months. Sent out to be fixed and so far it has been shipped twice in a week. Two different locations to be fixed. Was told it could take up to a month to be fixed. Not a Happy Camper!

What's great about it: The picture quality and ease of navigation was great. Could hook up to the U-verse DVR box for internet access.
What's not so great: Died within 4 months, just like the Sony DVD player I had. Beware of the 90 days warranty/
It was a great player while it lasted, but for $130, that was $30 a month to watch BluRay. Nearly identical issue with the Sony upconvert DVD player, died after little use. Don't waste you hard earned money on Sony. Also, be aware of the length of time someone has owned a product before they review it. Two weeks ago, I would aso have been a 4 or 5,but now it is dead.

i got this one on sale so it was an extra great value - it works great and is easy to use. apparently all blu-ray players need period "updates" which i'm not thrilled about but we'll see how that goes.

What's not so great: No Eject button on remote.
Upconvert standard DVD is very good. No eject button but if you have a programable remote this function is available. I programmed it using another Sony Blu Ray model and Eject will work. I am satisfied with the player.
