What's great about it: EXCELLENT release, the band has outdone themselves
What's not so great: I wish I had written these songs...
Never straying too far from the stylings of "Hymns For a Dark Horse", they instead delve further into their eco-aware, folksy roots on their sophomore release. If you're already a fan of Bowerbirds, you'll feel right at home digging deeper with Phil and his cohorts as they explore new songs. The album opens with "House of Diamonds", which appears lyrically to be a darker theme, while the music will have you in high spirits. Vocalist Phil Moore sings as though he is observing a situation and relaying the happenings to the listener play-by-play:
"One morning you wake to find
you are shackled to your bed
and bound and gagged
Oh my, what a predicament"
It's understatements like the last line of the previous excerpt and his seemingly-constant mission to make the listener aware of the tragic effect we have on nature that endures Phil's lyrical contents to his listeners.
Musically, Bowerbirds sound like they'd be just as happy sitting in the privacy of their own living room playing music together as they would to be on stage in front of thousands of fans. They don't seem to be aware that we are listening, or even care, for that matter, since they're going to do what they do whether we like it or not. They blend an earthy sound of minimally-strummed acoustic guitar, accordian, violin, and loose drumming as the foundation to which Phil can then build his vocals on. Their sound will make you want to wander deep into the woods and find a sunny spot in a clearing in which to relax and enjoy their songs, and I'm sure they'd be just as happy to be there playing them for you.
I would recommend this to a friend!
