What's great about it: Isn't quick to have buffer run errors like the first ones that came out years ago.
What's not so great: Lacking in versatility.
This model of pioneer drive is not too hard to figure out, once you have played with it a few times. Unfortunately, it's obvious that you can only use the nero software that came with the drive, to burn music, etc. Rather than windows media player. And until I know different, I am going to assume that a person will not be able to burn DiVx movies with nero software either. Unlike my last Pioneer DVR-R100, which was fully versatile. Since my computer holds 2 cd rom's, I went ahead and purchased 2 of these DVR-A 18M's, rather than returning them, which was my first thought. These are the only ones that I know of that support ATA/ATAPI interface.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: same interface as my old set -- that's it
What's not so great: everything else about it
All I needed was something to read my CD-RW saved discs, preferably drag-and-drop burn and update like I did with my old Sony and Roxio setup on Windows XP SE. Best Buy had 3 options with my ATA interface, so I chose the Pioneer with the Nero driver software.
What a chunk of junk this thing is.
I read through all their manuals, studied this thing for a week, and I could not get it to work for me.
The Nero driver disc was the only disc the Pioneer DVR-A18M would read and recognize. It read all my other pre-recorded discs as empty, it would stall midway through all other software installation discs, and my favorite was burning new discs -- took forever to format discs and it would not allow any updates later on. What you initially had to save to disc was all you would get on that disc. No added folders, no documents, nothing.

I posted on this site a little while after buying this CD/DVD Reader/Burner because it worked well. Now, after only 3 months, it skips while watching a DVD (makes it impossible to watch) and it takes 1 hour to burn a music CD and 1.5 hours to burn home movies. I do not recommend this burner. After calling Pioneer, I found that it will take nearly 3 weeks to fix and get back to me, and that is at my expense. The customer service was horrible.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What's great about it: The tech support is awesome and the cost is very reasonable
What's not so great: The icon kept disappearing and unavailable to my computer but tech support helped me through the problem.
It is an excellent product that works well with windows and their tech support is terrific.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I installed this burner to my Sony Vaio R- Series Media Center Desktop computer because the original DVD burner was broken. This burner seems to work well, and the installation was easy as well.

What's great about it: Performs at the speeds it should perform at.
What's not so great: It gets a little loud when burning a DVD at 8x. Anything faster and it is not so loud.
So far this has been a great purchase. I was tired of LG and HP so I went with this Pioneer and it is getting the job done.

What's great about it: it has been performing flawlesly non stop in all different formats from cd-rw to dvd
I hooked the drive up to a amd athalon 2200plus machine and it configured automatically in the BIOS. very pleased with ikts performance and speed thx pioneer.

What's great about it: good burner, quick and reliable so far.
What's not so great: The price is a bit high considering Blu Ray prices are coming down.
It's quiet and very quick. I've burned about 30 discs without any flaws so far. It plays movies smoothly without the pauses that you get sometimes with others.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Fast, quiet, very easy to install, and a good price.
What's not so great: Haven't found anything.
Just purchased this drive to replace a drive [different brand] that "went south". This unit is fast, quiet, easy to install and at a very good price. I would rate this drive 5 stars and yes I would recomment it to anyone.

What's great about it: Been through many drives through the years and i've got to say that this is a real nice model.
What's not so great: It is just a re-tooled 118L but its still nice
As I say i've had many MANY drives through the years either installed for clients or for home use and this is one of the better ones. It reads discs nicely and burns as expected. I did not use any of the included software but I use Nero 9 and it works great with that. I highly recommend this product.
