I finally purchased one of these after trying several other units from Samsung and Sony. I'm happy to say that I am quite pleased with the sound this unit produces.
FYI, I suffered from hearing loss during my years in the service and this is the only unit that I have not needed to use the subtitles with. Voices are clear and crisp and there is no ugly distortion from the subwoofer to distract me from the movie I am enjoying.
Yes, there are limited bells and whistles, but for those that need to expand the system, there are TWO inputs available, Optical and Stereo RCA. I highly recommend this system.

What's great about it: Only 2 speakers and a sub woofer give out a nice professional sound system
What's not so great: Price is a tad high
In my opinion the system is great. The sound is very crisp and clear. I dont get that true surround sound feeling where it sounds like a plane is going over your head but I haven't played that many movies through it to find out. The price is a little high but the system definetly shows why Bose is one of the best. So if you dont want to run all those speakers around a room this system is definetly a good alternative.

What's great about it: sound is good
What's not so great: won't sync to the video
No matter what I try, I can't get the audio to sync to the video. When i see people talk, the sound comes out of the bose a second later. Ive tried all the setting possible. Even using the fiber optic cable.. Even bought a different fiber optic cable and still the same thing.. So I'm just using the sound that comes out of my tv. Waste of $640.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Bose! Bought This Over a Sound Bar, Because of size, 2 Small front Speaker And THE AMAZING Acoustimass! But Doesnt live up to the Bose Name, Sound ok, Weak tho, Was going to return it, but all installed, may learn to love it

I thought bose would be the best system I could buy but I was wrong. It sounds good but there are better systems out there for the money I paid. Lackof features such as no volume control on the tv so you dont know how load you have it. You can not adjust the sound coming out of it. When you turn the tv off and leave the bose on it will blast static through the speakers instead of staying quite.
I would have saved up more money and bought the big bose system with all the little speakers that you could place around the house if I had to do it all over again.

What's great about it: The sound is wonderful and it is super easy to set up.
What's not so great: It does what it does (excellently) and no more.
Our Bose CineMate Series II system is fabulous. It fills our condo building's large social room with fabulous sound from TV and DVDs or Blu-Rays. The only limit is that it cannot be expanded, used as an i-Pod port, etc. But everyone in our building is completely delighted with the sound and nobody has said they wish the system could be expanded!

What's not so great: Needed two controllers to watch TV
Disappointed, I was only able to control unit with their controller. This unit doesn't have a HDMI input that hooks to TV. Returned to store. Went to Sears and bought a unit that I only use my Direct TV controller. It turns on and off and volume works with TV. HDMI is needed so sound system works as if it is a part of the TV. The Best Buy salesman told me this system would work as if it were a part of the TV, I drove 80 miles to return unit then bought from a salesman that was smart enough to say I not sure this will work, but because it had a HDMI input I thought it would. With the HDMI it was simple.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I recently bought an LED screen and realized the sound on these new sets are horrible. I wanted something that was easy to use with all my existing hardware (bluray, xbox, wii, tv, etc.) and had great sound. This system is super easy to setup and for only a 2.1 configuration, sounds incredible!! I have had the unit pretty loud and there is no noticeable distortion. I know this is pricey compared to the less expensive sound bars, but you get that great Bose sound.

This system was purchased for my living room. The set-up took 10 minutes and it sounds great. It is a great buy for someone who wants added sound, but is not tech savey.
The only drawback...is that I cannot find a univeral controller that will control my Bose system.

Overall, I am very happy with the Cinemate system. In fact this is my second set. My first Cinemate was purchased about 6 years ago so I bought another when I upgraded my HD TV 2 months ago. Yes I wish the price was a little less, but you definitely get quality with this system.
