What's great about it: Supports many popular formats (Word, Excel, PDF, XPS, TIFF,JPEG)
What's not so great: You have to pratice with scanned or converted documents to get proper results.
I returned to school after almost 25 years in the Navy. I was an Electronics Technician and am pursuing a degree in Hardware and Software Support / Networking. In one of my business classes, the professor wanted applicable pages from works cited in research papers to be included as a Word 2007 attachment with the reference cited highlighted. I own a Hewlett Packard Office Jet J6480 All-In-One so I decided to try the software that came with the All-In-One to convert scans and PDF files to editable text in Word. The software did OK with some scanned documents but not so well when trying to convert a PDF file. The references I find on the Internet I print as PDF files using a free program called PDF995. After trying a demo of Read Iris 11, I decided to buy Read Iris 12 and I couldn't be happier.
The installation was quick and simple. The program initially starts with the OCR wizard which I recommend you use for your first scan and then turn off. The wizard runs you through a series of simple steps: 1) Select the image source (either scanner or image file. 2) This is the step where you initially choose the scanner. I manually selected the scanner model that most closely matched the one I own which was HP OfficeJet J6400 (TWAIN), 300 dpi color resolution. There are additional options to sharpen the scan etc. 3) Select the document language. 4) Choose the output format (Word 97/2000/2003, Excel, PDF,XPS). Once all the options are set click Go and you are ready to scan. My HP J6480 is wirelessly networked to 3 different computers in my home and the computer where ReadIris 12 is installed is not hard-wired to the printer. ReadIris 12 instantly recognized the J6480 wirelessly and the Ready to Scan window appeared and I was ready to scan.
The OCR recognition was very crisp and very accurate. ReadIris sets up the scanned areas of a document into text boxes in the program which can be deleted and rearranged before exporting. Sometime Readiris will treat Graphics as Text but you can draw a Graphic Box around obvious graphics in the scan and they will be reproduced in Word perfectly. I scanned a couple of documents and exported to Word with only minor touch up required. Once the document is in Word, it can be edited, deleted, and highlighted just like any other word document. The scanned text shows up as text boxes in Word. You can grab and move the text boxes around in Word as necessary which is very useful for condensing two pages down to one for example. It takes a little practice to produce the results you are after, but once you get the hang of it you find Readiris does a good job. To perform scans after the initial OCR Wizard scan can be done using the OCR Wizard button or by clicking Scan. I turned off the OCR Wizard so it doesn’t start every time I start the program. ReadIris also converts PDF, JPEG, TIFF, FAX, PNG, Bitmap, and DjVu files to editable Word text as well, with outstanding results. While there is no perfect OCR software, ReadIris does a fairly decent job .
