What's not so great: no battery makes it uselsess
the watch did not come with a battery. it did not say it any place on the package. i took it back to the store. the guy looked up the info & said the watch is not sold with a battery & did not know how i could get one. i returned it because it's useless. i went to sport's authority & got the exact same heart rate monitor & the battery was in the watch.

What's great about it: easy to set up, great reviews
What's not so great: NA
I started off with a different brand that worked well but it died after two weeks. While the other company did replace it, I wanted another HRM while I waited for them to send my replacement. I did a lot of research and found Polar brand had great reviews. Between the two HRMs, this is my favorite. It was very easy to set up and comfortable to wear. While I don't wear the watch on my wrist (I tend to kill batteries quickly), it does fit nicely into pockets or strapped to by bra strap.

What's great about it: easy to use, accurate, comfortable
What's not so great: n/a
I use this HRM at the gym when I take my aerobics classes, and when I use gym equipment such as the elliptical, and the treadmill - even weightlifting! I also use this when I clean my home because I'm curious to know how many calories I'm burning. I find it very accurate - I use a calorie tracker app called MyFitnessPal on my iPhone, and it guesstimates the calories burned. I no longer have that problem now that I have this HRM.
As far as the chest strap, it is adjustable and very comfortable - sometimes I forget I'm wearing it. I was concerned about how it would "look" - I felt that people would think I was some sort of robot with this weird device on my chest, but since I always wear a shirt over my sport bra, you don't see it. At this point, because it is so convenient and accurate, I wouldn't care if people saw it - it's about function, not fashion. As the instructions state, I rinse the part that reads your heart beat under cold water for a few seconds, and then I immediately put it on. After my workout, I rinse the fabric part under luke warm water for a few minutes to wash out the sweat.
The watch isn't as complicated as some make it out to be. You hit a button twice to begin, and you hit a different button three times to stop it. A quick read of the instructional manual in addition to using it often makes it pretty simple to use. I do not wear any jewelry when I work out because I find it annoying, so I wasn't sure how I would feel about wearing this watch. But it is so lightweight that when I’m doing my kickboxing classes throwing punches, I do not realize I have it on.
It tells you how many minutes you were in the "fat burning zone" and when you were in the "fitness zone". It also tells you what your average heart rate was, how high your heart rate had reached, how long was the workout, and of course, how many calories you burned. While you are using it, you can scroll through different screens of what I just mentioned. When you are done, it keeps a record of all of your workouts, so you can review it at a later time.
The only thing I don't like about it has nothing to do with the HRM itself, but Polar's website. I do not find it user friendly at all, and I would love to add my training files to the site so I can see my progress. So unfortunately, I decided not to use their website. I would love to be able to sync it automatically, but you have to spend more money to purchase the software to sync it to the website. Sorry, but I spent enough on the HRM (well worth the cost), but for now I will just insert my calories burned in MyFitnessPal.

Right after Christmas my friend Michelle came to visit and we were having a big discussion about all things exercise and diet. And, ironically, we continued to outline our fitness and health objectives through a dinner of chips, queso, and fajitas. But Michelle had a lot of great tips because fitness is kind of her hobby. As opposed to me. Fitness is more like my job that I don't like but have to go to anyway because I enjoy food. Anyway, I told her that I was going to be reviewing and giving away various fitness and health related items on the blog after the first of the year. And she immediately said, "Oh! Are they sending you a Polar watch?" I said, "What is this Polar watch you speak of?" So she showed me hers because she is disciplined and doesn't leave home without her running shoes and workout accessories. And she explained that it monitors your heart rate, tracks your workout, tells you how many calories you burn, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, lets you know when you're burning fat. I'm all about the burning fat. So I spent the last few days of December desperately hoping for this Polar watch that I'd never even heard of but now felt like my life wouldn't be complete without it. You can imagine my excitement when the nice UPS man knocked on our door one day in mid-January and delivered my very own
It comes with a strap that you wear around your chest while you work out and I worried it might annoy me, but it's actually comfortable and I got used to it without any problems. Of course I was highly motivated by the need to know how many calories I was burning and if my fat was melting away. Sadly, I usually feel like a run should burn at least 1500 calories and that is not the case. But I love it anyway because it helps me make the most of my workout and the EnergyPointer feature lets me know when exercise shifts from fat burning to fitness improvement. I can't recommend it enough. It's everything I hoped and dreamed it would be.

What's great about it: very accurate measure of my heart rate
What's not so great: the color/styling
I always wonder what my heart rate is while exercising and though I do sometimes check by counting the blood pressure throbs in my neck, I don’t always trust my count. The reason I would really like to know my heart rate though, is that if I’m going to go to the trouble of working out, I might as well work hard during those 20 or 30 minutes (which are hard to come by as a mommy), and burn those calories off quickly. So I’d like to know if I’m even in the right workout zone. No more lazing around and then calling that a workout. (Because then I complain that I have been working “so hard” but can’t see results. Sound familiar to anyone else?)
Once I opened up the box, I knew it had a heart monitor strap to go around my chest……but I thought it would be big and bulky and awkward. Well, this is what arrived.
A sleek little watch and a very slim strap to go around my chest.
Then I thought, “hmmmm, there’s no way that thing is comfortable. This is so going to bug.” So I strapped it on (right below my sports bra, right on the skin) and then ran around my living room (while my kids asked what I was doing), just to see how it felt. And wow, it didn’t feel any different than my sport’s bra. Cool.
So then I set up the watch and entered my info (weight, height, age, etc.) and then began the heart monitor function. Right away the electrodes (which were pressed against my chest), registered my resting heart rate and sent it right over to the watch. Then, of course, I began pounding out some jumping jacks, did some high knees, sprinted around the kitchen table, etc……….and then watched the monitor rise higher and higher. Then I rested and watched it dip, then hopped around some more and watched it rise, etc. I was just testing out the little sucker…..making sure it worked.
Another thing (in case you were wondering…….because I sure was) is that you can take the connector off the chest strap and wash the entire strap. Whew, you don’t have to wear an old sweaty strap each time.
This little Heart Rate Watch is light, super easy to use, no problem to wash, and produces info quickly. I was in love.
So I have taken it on a few runs and am able to glance down and check my heart rate at any time. I have also used it during an aerobics class and let me tell you, it’s nice to look down at the watch and see when I’m working hard and then to see when I’m not pushing hard enough. It seriously kicks me into gear.
A few other things that I really love about the watch:
-After a workout, the watch shows me how many calories I have burned. LOVE this.
-There’s a target heart rate graph, showing you if and for how long you were in “fat burning” or “fitness” zones during your workout. And it also tells you your average heart rate.
-There’s a BEEP, telling me when I have changed from fat burning to fitness zones.
-The watch and strap are waterproof, so they can be used while swimming.
-The watch saves your most recent 99 workouts.
-There’s a weekly summary feature, telling you the amount of time you worked out that week, how many calories burned, etc.
-If your weight changes, you can adjust it in the watch, so that the info your watch produces stays accurate.
-There’s a backlight on the watch, in case you are exercising in low light.
-The info transmitted to my watch, is also transmitted to the equipment at the gym (treadmill, eliptical, etc), so it displays it nice and big on the machines.
-The watch and chest straps are very adjustable and are both very light. This was a major plus for me.
Some things I don’t like:
- While Working out, I can’t see how long I’ve been working out on the main screen. I just like to have a counter. So I wish there was room for a counter to always be present. However, I can click over to the timer by clicking one of the buttons. So it’s not a big deal, really. I’m just kinda lazy.
-Not crazy about the color/design. But you know, I guess color doesn’t matter too much while burning calories.

What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: color is kind of ugly. :)
If you had asked me a couple of weeks ago what that meant or what it was, I couldn't have told you...but I tell you what, now, I LOVE it. While we're at it, can I just say, that of all the products I have gotten so far, THIS is the one I thought I would like least. However, nothing could be further from the truth! This little watch has been SO motivating for me and my workouts. In some weird way, it's been really fun to be able to track my actual time spent exercising, calories burned and more!
The Polar Watch helps you make the most of your workout with this water-resistant heart rate monitor and watch system. The EnergyPointer feature lets you know when exercise shifts from fat burning to fitness improvement. How exciting is that?! I had no idea something so simple could be so fun and easy to use! It's like INSTANT gratification following a workout and who isn't motivated by instant gratification.
My favorite feature by far is the calorie counter. Who knows how this may have changed my life had I found it years ago! Set up was the hardest part and that just meant entering all of your information like height and weight and even that was easy! Using it with a workout is very easy...you just put on the watch (which you could very well wear all the time) and put on the heart monitor band, push start and you are ready to go!
I was a little leery of the whole heart monitor band but once you have it on and adjusted properly, you instantly forget it's there. In fact, I have left it on way past a workout or two because I forget all about it. You don't feel it while you are working out at all and I have been doing lots of jumping jacks and running in place.

What's great about it: The sending unit unsnaps from the chest strap. The chest strap can then go into the washing machine.
What's not so great: nothing so far
I use this monitor for P90X. It works great. The instructions are easy to understand. I've used this monitor for 5 weeks and don't have any complaints.

It comes with the chest band and the fitness watch. You initially set it up with your height, weight, etc. but after that, it’s pretty simple.
First you need to run the two gray parts of the strap under warm water,
then strap the electrode-thingy on and strap it around your chest right under your bra. It’s really quite comfortable and you get used to it in no time. Then, you get to monitor your heart rate AND what mode you are in: fat burn, or fitness. When you are finished with your workout, you can see how you did: the watch tells you how long you were in each mode, your average heart rate, maximum heart rate, how long you exercised, and how many calories you burned. It keeps me motivated and challenges me to beat myself next time. Forget the gym membership! Invest in this instead.

What's great about it: Great tool to make sure you are getting the workout you want.
What's not so great: Extra accessories required to sync
I have mentioned before during this 5K journey of mine that my father-in-law is a runner. He is a serious runner with all of the gear and gadgets, fancy shoes and training schedules. He is the guy that you don't tell you are training for a race because he would jump on a plane and fly to Texas to run with you. I am not even kidding.
But if he did find out about this whole 5K deal he would be really proud of my newest running gadget. It is actually one that he owns himself. The Polar FT7.
It may look like a watch, and it does give you the date and time, but its real job description is a heart rate monitor. There are a lot of different ways that you can measure your running pace, but a heart rate monitor will actually tell you how your body is handling that pace. The Polar FT7 has an energy pointer display that will tell you if you are burning fat or if you are improving your fitness and it will alert you when you switch from one to the other to help you stay where you want to be. Whatever your goal is, it will make sure you are running, walking, or cycling at a pace that helps you reach that goal.
The Polar Heart rate monitor is really easy to set up and use. After you have entered your information like age, height, and weight, you are all set to go. You put on the transmitter, a strap that you wear around your chest, start the training computer (aka the watch look alike) and start working out. As long as your workout lasts more than a minute it will automatically store your data. If you want to keep track of your results long term, you can transfer them to polarpersonaltrainer.com where you can create a training program and training targets that will help keep you motivated and allow you to track your progress.
The heart monitor is probably my favorite training device because even though I am running at a slow pace, I know the exercise is doing exactly what I want it to do. I know just how far to push myself to slowly and steadily increase my speed, without pushing myself so hard that I hate running. Slow and steady wins the race, right?

What's great about it: Comfortable strap, data saving, languages
What's not so great: The watch is ugly
Despite not being easy to use without reading the manual, after it becames very simple. It is really good to see the complete data of the trainning and the sum of the week. The strap is as comfortable as it is possible (better than the Timex one).
It informations are availlable also in portuguease!

What's great about it: The Polar was very easy to set up, works great.
What's not so great: Not a fan of the gold/black, but for the functionality I can live with it.
The Polar connects to most gym cardio machines so that you don't have to keep your hands on the metal heart rate monitors. Love the calorie counter and that you can see your history of work outs. The strap is a little annoying at first, but you get used to it.
