What's great about it: The speed and how many app you can use on it
What's not so great: the price and you need certian hardware for certian apps
this ones beats vista and xp out of the water with all the new apps and fretures but some needs you to have a v-cpu (virtual-cpu) for windows xp mode and if you want to have a better display you would need to get a better display card or a new computer. It let the user choose how they want there desktop to be and lets them tweek there UAC settings. on vista i needed to download a program just to do that. the speed of windows 7 is far better then vista but if you are going to upgrade from vista to 7 dont. you would still get a lot of the vista problems and headacks so i just say do a clean install. and if you backup it will eat up your ex hdd

What's not so great: Some small compatibility issues, but you have to expect that upgrading from XP which is 9 years old.
Easy to install, much faster than Vista, but with the nicer interface. Lots of nice features and the 64 bit seems to have fewer issues than Vista.

What's great about it: It cleaned up the garbage left by Vista
What's not so great: The price. Way over priced.
I am a victim of Vista.
After calling an IT geek in the family, her advice was to save money and get the upgrade version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I was hesitant in fear of building on top of my present Vista disaster. She said that her boss had her install the upgrade on their system because the head office said it worked out well with them. She did, and it does.
I gave it poor marks on the installation due to the 10 hour install. If there was a program that could destroy hardware, Vista would come close. Vista had put my Toshiba Laptop in such turmoil that Windows 7 had to make hours worth of untold repairs and deletions before it could finish the install. My motivation to buy 7 came after Vista crashed the 4th time. My IT advisor said it would have to fix Vista's screw-ups first and that could take quite a while. That was an understatement! But the tasking on my part for the install was nothing. I just had to stop looking at what appeared to be a dead screen, when 7 was actually working hard for me, and go hang out at the coffee pot.
But now it works, runs smoothly, boots quickly like XP, and offers a simplier life at the keyboard. Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade is the cheaper way to go because geeks say this is what you'll need to fix Vista. They're right!
What I like about it is 7 has allowed me to change the look of 7 to appear like it's Wiindows XP Pro. I loved XP, but 7 Ultimate is noticably better than XP.
7 Ulitmate has so much more to offer, but to get what you truly need you will have to pay the Ultimate price. Shame on you Bill Gates, but thank you Bill Gates.

What's great about it: Great system graphics, good performance, very user-friendly
What's not so great: Not compatible with some hardware and software, needs some user tweaking to some minor settings
Well, my new system came with Windows 7 Ultimate. The minute I started running it I was impressed. The visuals were great (even when booting up), the system was running fast, and after installing my wireless driver I was right into using it.
The Windows 7 Network Utility is a great feature that found useful, although it has the flaw of not accepting passphrases for encryption. It was no big deal though, because I could still find the key with the help of another computer. The action center really hooked me for it's ease of use.
The graphical accessibility is just great, and I found the taskbar preview image to be very useful. The log-off screen, which details which programs still require data to be saved or were still accessing the hard drive, was very useful to me as well.
I did come across a problem though. I am not sure if it is Windows or not, but my system does not boot when my microphone is plugged in. I am aware that Vista has had problems with many USB devices, so I am somewhat suspicious, but the microphone did not work well with 2000 either.
Another problem, is that some software is not compatible with Seven. One in particular, a game modification for multi-player use of Grand Theft Auto; would not run past the loading screen, even after running it as an administrator and in Compatibility Mode. I can tell you for sure there is no guarantee that your 98/Me/2000/XP programs will run on Seven; but this one incident is the only one I've had with software since I got the machine.
A great feature that truly sets this edition of Windows apart from it's predecessor of preference (meaning XP) is the network troubleshooting center. Many others including myself have constant network problems on XP and come to me for help. It's often something very trivial, such as a driver that has been corrupted or a cord that is loose. I came across a network problem on Seven though, and I loaded up the NTC; and it was solved within minutes, while it would take hours on XP.
Something that really caught me was the fact that I noticed in the task manager that the system processes used less than 600 megabytes of RAM, while I've used quite a few Vista systems that have well exceeded 1.5gb.
In a few words, Seven is fast, reliable, and user friendly. It is easy to get used to even for the classic user. Microsoft took a nosedive straight down with Vista, but as XP was to Millenium Edition; Seven was a revival and a sigh of relief. I recommend that anyone with a little extra money a modern computer (2.8GHz Singlecore or 2GHz dual-core, 2GB+ RAM, and a video card with at least 128mb of RAM) get this product. It is a great deal and I know I will have no excuse to stop using it.

What's great about it: installed fine on intel quad core and hp dual core amd 64
What's not so great: only 32 bit for intel quad core
I initially upgraded to windows 7 professional on my quad core. I was surprised that it would not accept an vista ultimate edition for the upgrade and that it would only allow 32 bit. So I purchased and installed windows 7 ultimate (to be able to use the XP compatibility). Again, it would only allow a 32 bit install (and here I thought quad cores were 64 bit hardware). It installed fine. I then tried the hp laptop with a dual core amd 64. It installed using the 64 bit media without a problem. I installed some html software to test the compatibility with XP (on my laptop) along with skype and some other software (OpenOffice). It all installed and behaved correctly. The only problems I had had to do with networking. Windows 7 Ultimate uses ipv6 protocol which causes grief on most older routers. I disabled it along with client for micro soft and shares.

What's great about it: Keeps Some of Vistas Functions
What's not so great: Not worth the Money and Takes out to many features
A lot of people have said bad things about vista in the past but I personally never had a problem with vista and found it a very stable operating system. After installing windows 7 I first noticed that it very closely resembled Vista but with some features missing and some features added that I was not fond of like the new taskbar that can become very overwelming if you have to many programs or windows open. Also they have taken out the ablity to manually organize your photos and the text on the computer has become very small unless you do a lot settings adjustments more so on Exploer. All in all 7 is an ok operating system if you go and pick up a pc today but if you are thinking about upgrading save your money for something else because I spent the money and am now restoring my computer to vista

What's great about it: Look and feel of the new interface. VM ware for XP programs. Overall appearance.
What's not so great: Backing up files because I was switching from XP to 7
Switching from XP to 7 is still new to me and a learning phase. I don't want to sound negative or be a out right expert but I have high hopes. The installation did give me some problems such as coming from an old Dell XPS with old hardware. If you are interested in upgrading your PC do the compatibility test first and double check with the manufacture to ensure there are software upgrades for any Hardware you may have.
Overall I had a good experance witht he installation and minor problems with software patching with existing hardware.

What's great about it: Upgrade from Vista Pro was seemless; no loss of files
What's not so great: Backwards compatibility; lock-ups and crashes
So for starters the only, and I mean only, reason I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) now is that my 5 year old laptop died and the new one I bought last month came with Vista Home Pro (I need to run IIS). I was perfectly happy with XP Pro and had no intentions of moving up this fast due to past issues with Windows operation system rollouts. I typically wait six months for the kinks to be worked out. All that said ...
For the short time I was on Vista Pro I can say without much history on it I don't see much of a difference yet (of things I need in an operating system) between the operating systems except that I now need to upgrade plenty of applications; including Microsoft's. The main pain for me is Visual Studio .NET. From what I have read if you want to run 2008 (I had 2003) your best bet is installing the 32-bit version which to me is just plain pointless when I paid the money to run a 64-bit system. I did install, and now have to eventually pay for, Visual Studio 2010 Beta without any issues. All is well at the moment.
However, IE 8 continues to lock up on me and when it does Zune freezes then I have to reboot. When I have to reboot I have to do a force shutdown because other apps are frozen and not closing. There have been no updates to address this yet ... I have all current Windows updates except for the 35 languages it wants to support (they need to allow to disable recommended downloads users never want).
I know from past experience installing Windows all the way back to 3.1 that there have been and always will be compatibility issues with software but with their own flagship and current software and utilities??? Call me a simple-minded dork but is it too much to ask for to surf the web and listen to some tunes???
If you can hold I would suggest doing so. If you can't then please proceed cautiously and do your research with what you want to run. You may want to start with the 32-bit version. I may end up reformatting my new laptop and start over with it if I continue to have issues.
Still, do we have any other choice but recommend the inevitable? I do so out of necessity; not desire! :)

What's great about it: Boots MUCH faster, simple upgrade from Vista.
What's not so great: Still lacking a few compatible drivers.
I've been upgraded to Windows 7 for about four weeks now. I have been on Vista Ultimate for nearly three years. While I liked Vista, it was slow and a total resource hog. Windows 7 has done a LOT to remedy that issue. My desktop and my laptop both boot up much faster. A few new features in Windows Explorer that make every day tasks much simpler and faster. Some cool features from Vista have been discontinued, but they were only icing on the cake anyway. I'd rather have a more stable, faster system, then cool toys.

What's great about it: Allot faster than Vista. Far less resources in use. Jump lists are Awsome!!!
What's not so great: Internet issues.
Installed no problem. Works allot faster than Vista. Having issues with internet being slow. I have seen that it might have something to do with the auto updates. I have disabled them and it seems to have fixed the issue. However, when I do download updates, it kills my internet for the whole network. I hope MS fixes this soon.
I love the new quicklauch/taskbar. It takes some getting used to but is extreamly powerful. It reminds me of the dashboard on the Mac OS. Very useful. I can now run most of my system from the desktop. Jumplists are awsome and apply to any application.
I have not been able to get the snap feature to work right... I think... It is supposed to allow the user to drag one window to the side and it auto resizes it to take up half the screen and then it is supposed to auto resize the other window so you can compair the 2 windows. I think I may have this slightly wrong and probably have to play with it a little more.
Networking was way too easy!!! On setup it simply asked for my pass code for the router and then everything was networked and I could already gain access to other shared files on other pcs in my network. Very nice. I still had to change my workgroup, although this did not seem to affect anything. It took a couple of hours to figure it out in Vista. I have not shared any of my folders yet, but I have a feeling this will be just like it was with Vista.
I ranked it low on value for the money because, this is what Vista should have been from the get go. Vista just came out a couple/few years ago and is already being replaced with 7. Windows 7 is Vista with very few changes to the user interface and many changes to background applications running. Even most of the system sounds are the same. I am very glad for the change, but feel that having to pay full retail for a better version of something I already paid for, kind of makes me sick.
I def recommend this to everyone. Even the people that still run XP. This OS is the way to go. Make the jump it is finally worth it.

What's great about it: EVERYTHING!
What's not so great: NOTHING!
I just received my Windows 7 Party Package today with Windows 7 Ultimate signature edition in it. I immediately installed it on my computer. Two hours later, it finished. It is by far the best OS I've ever used. It allows you to personalize so much! You can even make it so that your background can change every 30 min, 1hr, etc. This is by far better than Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is actually pretty good though. My only problem is the software capabilities and performance. It wasn't as fast as I thought it would be. However, Windows 7 is a big difference from Vista. My CPU used to be maxed out all the time. Now, it stays in the 50-75% range. GET THIS SOFTWARE ASAP
1 IT'S A MUST HAVE!
