What's great about it: price is good, unfortunately if it doesnt work I guess its not worth it at any price
What's not so great: phone support at Seagate is worthless
Went thru 3 boxes trying to get all problems resolved. Seagate support is worthless and their best answer is let them check and we will get back to you in a couple of days. After 3rd box didnt work I had enough and returned it along with 880GB GO drive, Seagate WiFi dongle & 16GB USB thumb drive. At least Best Buy was great about returns. Now I see Seagate will be coming out with a new box end of June. I do plan to check that out, cant be any worse than the +.

What's great about it: Plays almost everything I threw at it.
What's not so great: Won't play some Windows Media Files (WMV).
Easy to set up and use.
Has USB ports on both front and rear of unit for accessing content on USB devices (such as thumb drives or external drives).
HD- High defintition video playback capability - 1080p capable HDMI output.
Firmware can be updated directly from the internet (highly recommend you do this BEFORE attaching any hard drives).
Wired Networking via Ethernet - Wireless networking available if you buy an optional USB wireless dong (about $50 more).
Has access to NetFlix online library (with the newest firmware update) IF you have a NetFlix account.
I really thought I had a great deal (paid $139 for it at Best Buy in Killeen, TX) until I just saw the same unit at somewhere else online for $89.
I will probably be returning this one if I can't get a price match.

What's great about it: Seagate Hardrive not required; Played everything I through at it! Netflix!!!
What's not so great: Interface is slow at times
I was looking for a media player in this price range that would play my MKV collection and stream Netflix as well. With this device I was alble to stream raw bluray rips, ISOs, 1080p MKVs, and any DIVX file I could find. I bought it for the bedroom and do not have surround sound in here. The MKVs I had all had 5.1 or better sound, but this device played the sound in 2.0 just fine without adjustments. MKVs streamed just fine using windows 7 by simply sharing the folder and typing in your login credentials into the seagate device. Also streams Hulu using Playon Media server app on your PC. Netflix works perfect after updating to latest firmware, however it is not the fancy version you see on the game consoles, but more like the simple one you see on the Roku Devices. At $120 or less this unit is well worth it.

What's great about it: Full DivX support, Multiple Media Access Points, Lightweight, Easy Setup, Great Price
What's not so great: Nothing to Complain About
I have purchased a lot of media and tech gadgets over the years, but have never written a review before. I finally decided this year to migrate all of my native VOB file formats to high-quality DivX using TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4. Although my DSM 520 streams my DivX movies via TVersity, I have been looking for native DivX streaming/play support. (I have tested a dozen different software applications and digital formats -- DivX has proved to be the most reliable digital movie package)
Recently, I purchased a Seagate FreeAgent 640G drive (to add to my collection of external hard drives). Although I initially experienced some issues with the drive disconnecting…once I changed the power settings to "Never" shutdown, it has worked like a charm.
In reviewing the purchase of an additional media streamer/player, I looked at both the WD and Seagate models. WD does NOT support DivX although they offer 2-3 variations of their media theater devices. The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD Media Player not only supports DivX, but also supports the multiple audio streams and subtitles I have embedded in my DivX movies. The player provides a slot to plug in the slimmer FreeAgent drives (640G and less). You also have the ability to plug in 2 additional USB drives of which I have 4 to choose from. I can also grab shared folders and access media servers such as TVersity from any computer on my home network.
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD Media Player also accesses my music collection with the embedded artwork without any problems. The player allows multiple views of your media either by your custom folder structure and/or by automatically indexing all of your media files in alphabetical order. You can display by file list or thumbnails. If I can only figure out how to embed movie art into my DivX media, I will be on cloud 9 (research in progress).
I could go on, but I really have nothing bad to say about this device. If folks are complaining, I might look elsewhere for the root cause. The price point and capability are perfect for a device that I can easily move around my home and take with me when I travel to play content from my HD quality media library.
And a recommendation to all who are serious about creating a digital media experience in your home...although wireless is easy to set up, a wired network will create a nearly flawless digital media set up. I have wired network connections running to every room in my house. I am able to pick up and move any device and have the ability for the device to regularly update its firmware and access digital content without pauses, delays, skips, and/or whatever other issues you might encounter. Do it right!!

What's great about it: New firmware fixes folder listings and allows Netflix
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ does a good job playing my video-ts files.
Before the new firmware upgrade the folder listings from the network
were not in alphabetical order which was a real pain in the you know what.
BUT now the unit works nice after the upgrade and as a bonus it can
stream Netflix if you have a subscription.

What's great about it: Excellent quality playback
What's not so great: Poor user interface, buggy software, missing WMV-HD 6-channel audio codec
I purchased the Seagate FAT+ with high hopes for an affordable solution to the dilemma of playing HD video files stored on my network server to my HDTV. While this product does just that, there are some major issues that to date remain unresolved.
The overall physical format of this player is sleek if slightly retro-looking. The device tends to overheat quickly so I recommend leaving plenty of air space around it. I have mine sitting on it's side with an inch on either side for airflow.
Installation was pretty straight-forward. Plug it in and set your network parameters and you're good to go. My player immediately detected my Netgear Stora NAS and within minutes I was paging through menus of files available for playback. You have the choice of large clunky icons sorted by creation date or small clunky icons in a list view. The option of sorting alpha by name does not work over network shares. If you directly plug in a USB drive then you have that option, Presumably if you dropped in a Freeagent drive into the built-in dock, it would allow sorting there as well.
Not only does the FAT+ not sort correctly over the network, it doesn't enable the option of searching by file type either. In fact, network support only works in a rudimentary way. This is awkward when you have hundreds or thousands of files and folders to hunt through.
The FAT+ played nearly everything I threw at it with the primary exception of WMV-HD files with 6 channel audio encoding. The video will play but there is no support for the audio. The player does support ISO and mkv files. In fact, when confronted with an ISO, the player behaves pretty much like a DVD or Bluray player, with full menu support.
The FAT+ claims to support Media Servers and does in fact detect them if they are available on your network. Unfortunately, that's as far as the support goes. I was unable to get the device to even display icons in this mode.
Another feature that seems broken is support for album cover or disk cover artwork displayed as an icon. Yes, you can drop a jpg file named the same as the media file into the same folder, but rather than use the jpg as an icon, both files display. This is not very useful.
As for the tiny FAT+ remote, I like a few of the features (up to 8x zoom levels and fast forward/reverse up to 32x). Unfortunately, the fast forward only works on certain file types and seems to break down on others.
I've been spending a great deal of time on the Seagate FAT+ user forum reading and hoping for solutions. Regrettably, Seagate seems to have little concern with fixing the many shortcomings of their product. They have been promising new firmware for months.
I will say that the recently added You-Tube support is a nice feature (though the same feature implemented on my Samsung BD player works better). Seagate has also added support for weather (ho-hum) and Flickr, as well as some news feeds. I wish they'd spent their time fixing existing issues rather than adding new features of limited use.
Overall, this device has been a disappointment. I would recommend to others considering it to wait for Seagate to resolve some of these long-standing issues. Neither would I recommend the competition based on what I've read. Your best bet? Wait a while longer for the technology to improve. I imagine that within 6 months time that the market for this type of device will explode. More choice in the market should drive Seagate to clean up their act.

What's great about it: Plays video content from hard drives or network
What's not so great: nothing so far
Does a good job of playing back a variety of video formats from both USB hard drives and via a media server on a network computer. DVD menus work from the VIDEO_TS folder files when that folder is on the hard drive. Did not work as well via the media server but that could be the old server software. The Seagate saw my 5 year old D-Link Media Server Software and used it just fine. Only problem setting it up was getting it to pick up a wired network IP address, I finally reset the network hub and that fixed it.

What's great about it: Set up in a couple minutes, handles DVD folders and library excellently
What's not so great: Signal says it is actually a DVI, not true HDMI output to the HDTV
After the WDTV mini putting up a struggle, long delays turning it on and not always detecting the usb external hard drive, I had had enough. I wanted either a unit that can handle a usb hub which rumor has it WDTV and WDTV live no longer officially supports, and/or networking. This Seagate FreeAgent Theater plus can do both ... handle a usb hub (have 3x usb western digital my book essential external hard drives - so far) AND supports ethernet or wireless networking. I am putting off trying out the networking until i can afford to upgrade two desktops and a laptop from 802.11 g to 802.11 n+ and buy the usb doggle for the media player appliance.
This unit has various menus and submenus for the many screens, providing drop down selections of many options. For example, music playlists running while random slideshow and random fades of photos can be selected. Select show DVD in the movie area and the unit scan all attached usb drives, coupled with viewing folders, and there you have a list of DVD folders to select from.
The only problem so far was using the HDMI cable at first. The unit kept saying the signal was DVI and that you needed bascially to use the component and composite cabling to make the message go away and I believe render a better quality picture.
And my wife and I love the volume up or down bottoms on the remote!

What's not so great: Very primative, needs lots of work before it is a serious contender.
It supposedly plays lots of file types. If you have their proprietary hard drive it's probably ok; HOWEVER, if you intend to stream from NAS you're in for a surprise. You have to fumble through a very rough menu system to discover your network every time you turn it on. Nothing is automatic.
I returned mine after fooling with it for a couple of days. Maybe in a few generations it'll get better. There's definately plenty of room for improvement.

What's not so great: The box is setup to disable the wireless connection once it connects
I got this for Xmas 09 and it worked O.K. but it quickly upgraded itself and now the wireless dongle does not work and the box is now useless to me. I notified Seagate about the problem and they agree that the software does this but they don't know when it will get fixed.
My advice is to stay away until they actually have a product that works as advertised.

What's great about it: The only device in this price range that plays dvd ISO files with full DVD menu support and subtitles.
What's not so great: Interface could be prettier.
Great product. Similar to WDTV Live, except this gives you full ISO menu and subtitle support. It also connects seamlessly to NAS and MS Windows (Samba) shares. Reads FAT32 and NTFS drive partitions on USB drives.
Future proof. There has been talk of adding Netflix support, but current firmware doesn't allow this. Future Netflix support has NOT been confirmed yet. It may or may not happen.
Small, sleek design fits anywhere. Easy setup and configuration. Reads all kinds of file types. Definitely a great product. Simply blows away the WDTV Live and others.

What's great about it: Performs exactly as advertised
What's not so great: The Instructions even the user guide downloaded from the company website leaves you with a learning curve
This is a great product that did just what I bought it to do. I have it connected to a 1080p capable TV but have not had the opportunity to view something in true high de as I am currently deployed with the Army in Afghanistan. The movie files that I have available are standard definition, however it makes them look as if they were high def. Maybe I am just lacking a good reference. The installation was super easy, just plug and play. I began by plugging my hard drive in directly then decided since that work so easy that I would be able to move my hard drive out of the way and just get my media through my network. This was also fairly easy if you don't mind tinkering with computer stuff. Nothing in the guide explained what to do when I get a username and password page when there is no username set up on the share I was using. After some time I used the default username and input my password and it worked wonderfully, I am obviously not that network savvy. Hope this helps.

What's not so great: Clunky menu structure, doesn't show thumbnails for files- only title/name of file
Setup was very easy. I like the built in You Tube feature, but searching for videos, much like the interface is a bit tedious and should have been built into the remote. Although the FAQ on the Seagate FA Theater page alludes to working with NETFLIX, I don't believe it is currently supported. Overall, I'm happy with it!

What's great about it: Video's look great, Easy to set up, Photo's look awsome on big screen, Music Plays at same time as photos
What's not so great: menu could be better, Video transition choppy
I have owned the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ for 5 days.
I cannot comment regarding durability except to say that Seagate was smart to design the covers for the hard drive slot to be completely removable, negating the possibility of breaking a hinging mechanism.
I had narrowed the search of a media player down to 3 units that cost just over 100 dollars:
1.WD live(WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN) [3.5star w 128 Amazon reviews]
i.WD TV live 1st one [4.0star w 395 Amazon reviews]
2.Seagate theater+ [4.0star w 14 Amazon reviews]
3.ASUS O!Play - TV HD. [4.0star w 87 Amazon reviews]
I decided to go with the Seagate based on reviews of someone that owned both the WD and the Seagate. I decided on the Seagate over the Asus based on the past experience of the Seagate company product workmanship. Seagate has extremely good reviews for their external hard drives (in comparison with other external hard drive manufacturers).
All three offer only 1 year limited warrantee.
All three offer wired Internet connection
I have Comcast and no router yet.
It only allows me to hook it up to one IPC address.
I can’t try this till I get a router.
WD has wireless Networking built in
Seagate has optional wireless networking dongle $59.
All three play most every type of video files, photo files and music files.
I have my SGT+ (Seagate Theater+) hooked up to my 65” 1080i Pioneer Elite TV via HDMI cable. I have my WD notebook 1Tb external hard drive connected to the SGT+ with a USB cable.
I purchased this for 1 major reason. I wanted a safe way to backup and play my digital HD home videos (recorded on my Canon HF100). This is the method that I chose.
1.I download HD home video from the Canon to my Computer with a USB cable (8GB of video, about 1.5 hrs of recording, downloads to computer in less than 10 min.).
2.I copy the new videos to two external hard drives. I always keep one attached to the computer, the other I keep on top of the TV with the SGT+. It takes about 10-15 minutes to transfer the files to the External Hard Drive. If one external hard drive crashes, I always have the back up copy. When I transferred my entire HD video collection, Aug ’08 to Jan ’10 [86Gb], It took 1 hr 10 min with the USB cable. Computer(HP-A6000N 2.2Ghz dualcore, processor,Vista,2GbRAM-the-only-upgrade)
3.I can now take my SGT+ and the external hard drive with me when visiting grandma and have my entire photo/video/music collection operating on their TV in minutes (It has HDMI & Component for HD TV’s along with a Composite Cable with red, white & yellow connectors for old TV’s).
Two things we’ve really enjoyed that I hadn’t really thought about is viewing our photo collection on the SGT+ and listening to our music. I have a Nikon 5400 5.1 MP camera and a Canon XS camera that I shoot 5.1 MP photos with. Photo’s from both cameras are absolutely stunning when viewed on my 65” Pioneer Elite TV. I had no Idea how good they would look blown up that big. The images are incredible. I had hooked both cameras up to the TV via the yellow/white/red composite A/V cables and the picture had never looks very good on any TV we’ve used, but viewing them in digital format through the SGT+ is a fabulous experience.
The music has been really nice to enjoy. We have all our CD’s converted to digital and stored on our external hard drive. Every once in a while we will play the music using our computer, but it’s a bit of a hassle and the speakers are nothing in comparison to the great built in speakers in our Pioneer Elite TV. Having the SGT+ remote is super nice too, compared with the computer and its mouse. If you start playing your music, then you open up the pictures to look at them, it will play both simultaneously. Makes looking at the pictures more enjoyable. Says you can use playlists, I haven’t tried that yet.

What's great about it: It plays my movies and music which is what I purchased it for
What's not so great: Way to hard to network if even possible, annoying passwords, playlists? How?
I purchased this to network in with my PC. I have it connected to the TV HDMI and wired network. I can fumble through the menus and get it to see the PC but I have to put a password everytime I go through a directory. I see playlists but the lack of instructions doesn't indicate anything. Go to the forums an info is lacking. I have tried windows playlist and such. The best suggestions were to rename your songs!? No change after downloading the firmware but the additional channels with the firmware provided some entertainment. Segate please fix the network capabilities! I didn't want to purchase the hard drive as I have the computer with 3 drives. Lack of ease of networking forces you to purchase a drive.

What's great about it: Easy to use, plays ALL videos so far...
What's not so great: Some quirks...
it's a great product, especially for the price - the menu could look better, but does it's job - some quirks that i believe can be worked out in future firmware updates... but nothing overall too major to list...
bottom line, great price for this product, i'd buy another one if needed...
reads both windows and mac formatted drives out of the box

What's great about it: Does what it is supposed to do and does it very well (nice!)
What's not so great: The way file are listed (only 10 at a time)
Bought it, and had it set up in five minute or less
The Theater+ plays evey video type have. I really like that it can play my hi-def recordings from my Beyond-TV DVR and blu-ray across the network....gives me a blu-ray in three rooms.
The internet access to You-Tube is a nice feature too though I don't use it much
As a result of to the ease of use and all of the video capbilities, I purchased two more and now have a total of three of the Theater+ media players and I am very pleased with the medial player...it is a nice little player

What's great about it: Takes pretty much any video codec you can through at it
What's not so great: Logging onto your PC requires some Googling for Win7-registry tweaking, proprietary wireless adapter needed.
An great product if you're looking to watch your downloaded and/or converted movies. Excellent image quality, very few hiccups even when playing video over my network from my PC.
Upgrade firmware immediately from the menu system. I recommend hard wiring your broadband connection to appreciate the unit fullly until or unless you have a very fast wireless connection. The remote does what it has to but is not elaborate. There is space provided to connect a Freeagent Go drive and sync with your PC, plus any other drive through the 2 USB ports available. I primarly use my PC and a USB thumb drive. (You can watch movies from your PC DVD player, too.)
The user interface is decent and hopefullly will get better with further frimware updates. Fun watching Internet TV, YouTube, video podcasts, and more.
I originally wanted the WD TV-Live, but they were sold out. I took this instead. I subsequently purchased the WD live and immediately took it back. I'm glad they were out of the WD and picked this up.
Excellent product, especially for the money. These will be wildly popular when the secret is really out!
