I've had good luck with Netgear in the past while living in India. Coming back here though everything looks the same this thing is a piece of junk. I guess I was lucky that mine went a little over a year before totally giving out.
It drops constantly, 'forgets' some of my wireless connections and I have to reset them all the time and even if it's working, the speed is so much slower than when i first connected it.
I tried doing the firmware update and that took six hours of my life that I want back seeing as it went back to dropping off at least three times daily almost immediately.
I don't know if other items are better than this model, but I'm not going to bother trying any, I'm just going to use a different brand and not bother with Netgear anymore. I'm so tired of companies that don't bother making a product that will last any longer than its warranty.
This product has... Unreliable connection, slow connection

What's great about it: Nothing.
What's not so great: Disconnects, poor wireless signal.
After purchasing this device I was quickly able to install and get online. Shortly thereafter, I noticed my wireless laptop (sitting about 2 feel from the modem on the same desk) kept losing wireless connectivity. I also experienced at least 2 drops a day from my corporate VPN. On the 3rd day of this I decided to return it.
I have since exchanged this unit for the Actiontec GT784WN. For the same price I have stronger wireless reception in other rooms (dual antenna on the Actiontec) and I have yet to lose my connection - VPN or wireless.

What's great about it: Configuration ease
What's not so great: Wireless connections fails after several days.
After my second AT&T 2wire modem router failed after about 18 months I decided to try Netgear because I usually have found them to be good products. I am on my third DGN1000 because the previous 2 wireless failed at least 2 tixes within the first week. The wireless just stopped transmitting for all of the 2 or 3 wireless devices. A power cycle fixed things for several days.
The DSL wizard connected to AT&T just fine, the other manual configuration worked very well (I'm quite familiar with manual configuring Netgear routers). Speed seems just fine, and it actually connects N to my laptops.
But, I'm not willing to restart the router about once a week, so I think I'll return the third one.

What's great about it: easy setup, works greats for wired connections
What's not so great: poor wireless reception
I have had this modem for one year, it works great with the computer right next to modem, but wireless reception outside 10 feet is terrible. Setup is relatively easy with a windows 7 machine.
It occasional overheats, and looses signal. I actually has the unit sitting upside down- and that seems to help the overheating issue.
It has 4 wired ports and those work fine with very long cords to blueray player, xbox, and dish receiver

I was trying to replace a 6 year old Actiontec with this unit to increase my wireless speed. After struggling with it for hours, I finally got it to work with Qwest DSL. However, wired speed had dropped to half what it used to be and wireless speeds were pathetic. I'll be returning this as quickly as possible!

What's great about it: very nice and no problems using it
What's not so great: had some glitches setting it up
We had a couple of minor glitches installing it, but to be fair, we are using it with a non-USA internet service. Once we got it up and running, we've been very happy with it.

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Every thing else
Pros: Works with AT&T DSL setup is easy.
Cons: Runs very hot, wifi and wired connections drop randomly even when mounted on its stand. Blinking lights are annoying and extremely bright.
Overall: Better off spending a little more and buying the slightly more money buying a two part solution, or the higher priced unit.

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: It does not work with CentruyLink
After hours with Netgear customer service, paying $16 to have a replacement product sent to me, (replacement did not work any better) Netgear told me to return the product to Best Buy and exchange it for DGN2200. DGN1000 connects to the internet but navigation is slow with frequent "IE cannot display page" messages. It just does not work with CenturyLink.

What's great about it: Speed, setup time, support
What's not so great: Doesn't work consistently, seems to have a problem with more than 4 devices, plus certain MAC addresses
I got this to replace a dead 2Wire DSL modem. I probably have a little more extensive soho network than most people (one dsl 4 port wireless router, an 8 port switch, and 2 more wireless access points). I also decided to replace the 8 port switch and one of the access points with NetGear products, as the old linksys ones were definitely showing their age (only were T10/100).
Setup was relatively simple. I have QWest as a provider. It went extremely fast, and everything seemed to work fine.
When the modem works, it's fast and stable. But I have system drop-out problems.
With the system using 3 computers + 2 other ethernet devices, occasionally one or more computers will simply drop off the network. Which one drops off seems to be random. Drop off will be a couple times a day.
BTW, doing an ipconfig with the sequence flushdns, then release and renew seems to work most of the time on the affected equipment IF the router gives you a new (different IP address). But it should not be necessary to do this.
I reduced the system to just the DGN1000 and a couple of computers, and there were still problems. In an attempt to find out what was happening, I started assigning fixed IP addresses. The panel where you can assign fixed IP addresses did not work the way you'd like.
Devices would suddenly disappear from the list and or appear. In addition, sometimes the devices had the correct name (e.g. ComputerX) and other times it would simply say "UNKNOWN". This was even true with another NetGear product.
One of the devices was an new HP computer that had a MAC address beginning with E0:. When I tried to assign an IP address to this device (I didn't naturally didn't change the MAC address) it said invalid mac address.
I talked to NetGear support on the phone, and after quite a few hours he came back and said that the NetGear model I had (the DGN1000 that I had just bought) did not support newer MAC addresses that begin with E0. It was a hardware issue and not firmware (which was up to date, but we reinstalled anyway). I didn't think that E0 was that much of a newer address. The E0 was from a newer HP desktop machine.
Now, it's possible that the problem is due to the E0 mac addresses. It's possible that it's due to too many devices on the backend. But my older modems and routers all do it fine. It may just be that this single piece of hardware is flaky.
But the fact that NetGear support itself says that it doesn't really support mac addresses beginning with E0 makes be really, really leery.
BTW, I've used NetGear call-in support a couple of times (before this incident), and even on this incident I've found them really trying to be helpful. And they seem to be honest. I've never had a charge.
I suspect that this device will work fine in most settings. If you get one and get it home, and it doesn't set up right away and doesn't stay stable for a few days, I'd say give up and bring it back. Which is what I'm doing.

What's great about it: Small Footprint, Once it's setup, its great
What's not so great: Hassle setting up with AT&T if not done right the first time
If you have AT&T Dynamic DSL, then follow the directions until plugging in the router. Once plugged in, do not use the CD that comes with the device. Log into the router and use the Setup Wizard to let it determine your DSL type and then go back and put in your username and password and save it all.
It only took me 6 hours to figure that out with the help of a NetGear technician. AT&T does not support this router/modem and they don't know how to get it configured.

In fact, I'd like add more detail of how to use that in AT&T DSL service. It works with AT&T DSL service, the trick here is you must run the setup wizard at first time you connect it to your phone line and set up the DSL service. It would auto detect your DSL service type and only ask your login info. Then it works.
I don't understand why it doesn't work when you manually set up your DSL parameter in ADSL setting tab.

What's great about it: easy set up. sleek look
What's not so great: nothing so far
The first reviewer isn't grading the product. He is grading the ISP support. I also have the same ISP and I had to contact them for my Eopp info and password. Although it took 20 minutes to get a live person, after obtaining all the info I needed, the set up was a breeze. So far this modem is a lot better than the last one I had and the range is great.

What's great about it: N/A
What's not so great: Won't connect
Tried using this with ATT DSL in Michigan. With a DSL filter in place it wouldn't connect with DSL. Without the filter, it connected, but I could not establish an internet connection with my MacBook. ATT tech support said they could not offer much because Netgear wasn't supported by ATT. About 6 hours later I gave up when ATT offered to give me extra help for "only" $150. Maybe they could have got it going but I didn't find out. I'm returning this and getting an ATT compatible.
