What's great about it: It is reasonably priced and compact
What's not so great: It takes a couple of attempts to get it to play.
I purchased an HDMI cord as well with this unit. Each time I play a DVD, I have to unplug the HDMI cord and re-plug it in to get the unit to play my DVDs. Not sure why that happens, and it was frustrating the first time because I could not figure out why the movie would not start, but now that I know what to expect it's not so bad. The price was great and the picture is great. This is all I need for the bedroom, so I was happy to find one at this price. It's worth the money.

Love this DVD player. Took less than 2 minutes to set it up. Plugged it in and BAM I was watching a movie in seconds!

I've had this player for five months and played probably a dozen DVDs a week since purchase. Picture quality was fine, it played discs of all types well and was a snap to set up. That's the good news.
The bad news was that when I turned the player on today, the greeting screen was black and white and was rolling like an old TV with a bad vertical hold. Switching cables only produced a stable screen that was half of one frame on the bottom and the bottom half of the previous frame on top. A DVD was playable only if by playable you mean that images moved across the screen. Playable yes, watchable no.
Contacting Sony support I found that the item I bought on sale for $39 could be exchanged for a refurbished item for only $33 plus shipping. It's cheaper to recycle and buy a different brand. I wouldn't recommend this one.

I came home after my long hike up to Best Buy to find out that the DVD player we purchased was skipping freezing and not working. At first I thought it was my DVD but after putting in several different DVDs I realized it was the player. What a disappointment, now I gotta go all the way back there to get another one that also could not work. I wonder if they will pay for all the money it took me to get there? Maybe I'll just return it and go to target. I can't even explain how upset I am right now.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

if you are like me and have a ton of dvds and want to watch them in HD, then buy this up-scaling dvd player! it has great picture and very eay to use. i dont know much avbout the internet features as i have not hooked it up

What's great about it: nothing
I have had this unit for about 3 weeks. I have not been able to watch one movie without the screen going blank at least once and the movie stopping at least once. Not all of the functions of the remote work, some only occasionally. I am very disappointed with this product and will be returning today. The unit is also very noisey. I could live with the noise if the darn thing worked. I play store purchased dvds.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It doesn't make a dvd look fully HD, but it does improve the qualtiy of the picture, simle remote and easy to use. Nothiing to fancy but I think it looks good too, great deal at $40.

What's great about it: Good price for what you receive!
What's not so great: The set-up instructions are a bit lame.
We're very happy with the Sony DVD Player with HD Upconversion unit. Though it took me a while to figure out how to actually access the DVD Player via our TV screen, I eventually figured it out and "synched" the TV with the unit. #The instructions are pathetic, but--if you use your head and don't give up--you'll eventually figure out how to see on your TV what the DVD Player is running, even though it might take some trial-and-error efforts.# We have an older #Panasonic brand or something like that# TV, so I was pessimistic about my wife even ordering this technically-appropriate-but-simple-to-use unit, as I was doubtful we'd even be able to make it work in the first place. We've been using the unit since Christmastime #2011#, and--so far--it's not given us any problems. It fits nicely in the entertainment unit we have and tucks out of the way for convenience. Overall, it's good money for the unit's capabilities, and--if you don't need a DVD Player to RECORD material onto your DVDs, then this is probably the best buy for your money.

Bought for my 70 year old non technologically adept father. He has no problem watching DVDs and switching back & forth between tv & dvd mode. Extremely simple hdmi setup and great picture quality on his new 1080p flat screen too HaHa
