What's great about it: plays HD DVDs clearly and bright
What's not so great: no HD input, so cannot record in HD
This is an HD DVD player so we assumed it would record in HD also, but there is no HD input available. Because of that it balks every time we try to record something off of the satellite feed (which is in HD), plus there is little incentive to record something in standard def once your eyes have been opened to HD.

In a few weeks ago, I purchased it and tried to set up dvd recorder connected to TV and Digital box by cables very easy just the following diagram. I set up for the timer programming while I am not home. Let it record. I would not be worried about it and it won't be missing. I also bought DVD+RW and DVD-R running up to 6 hours for the record. That is awesome!

What's great about it: I purchased a refurbish one .... so the price was right.
What's not so great: The instructions ... very, very, very poor.
I purchased this refurbished product looking for rare DVR recorders these days. The instructions were ABSOLUTELY horrible. I have never seen instructions that can fit on a paper napkin. Instructions were so vague and the worst I have ever seen. Luckily, I am a technical person so I was able to figure it out myself .... without help. I want to get another DVR recorder but I am very relunctant to get another one. Thank goodness I have limited devices to hook-up ... just a TV. Whew!

What's not so great: The printed instructions are terrible, and we have been unable to record any TV shows.
We have not been able to get it to record anything. We are tech savvy people. This is ridiculous. The printed instructions are poorly written and actually misleading.

What's great about it: HDMI
What's not so great: no RF in, No tuner.
If you are aiming to record tv shows while you are not home, do not buy this unit. It has no tuner & you can only record the tv station you are watching at the time of the recording. It has no RF in for your cable box. Just a heads up.

What's great about it: very fast one button record
What's not so great: small learning curve, but once you get it, it will seem like its no big deal
This unit has a pretty straight forward hook up. the only problem I had was integrating it with the rest of my home theater. It really just took a bit of creative thinking on my part to get the right cable going to the right place, and then all was fine. I did have the no sound thing but I caught it before I recorded anything. in the end I used the regular left right audio cables and the component for for the video to my HDTV.
Pushing the record button to start works very well, on the old unit I had there was always a delay this one records right away (a first gen Panasonic). Making titles isn't hard at all to get the hang of, the worst thing about that was I kept hitting the wrong button and erasing my title, I can't fault the machine for that and it just one button to go back in the type it in again. Ii writes the title to the disc as soon as you review it and confirm its right. This is handy in that you don't have to finalize the disc to save it right away. Finalizing the disc is easy, three button pushes and it starts. the tv broadcast picture returns while you are finalizing the disc, and a progress meter displays at the bottom of the screen. DVD +R discs that I use finalize in about 3-4 min max (I didn't time it, but it wasn't long at all) the picture isn't HDTV quality but it is as good and most DVD out there, and it is still much better than any VHS tape you will play.
I haven't tried the pause it to cut out a commercial thing. If I want it that perfect I will rip it into the computer and edit it there. I use it to put things on disc to help save room in my DVR. I will cue up what I want to put on there, set the record time, play the DVR and go off to do other things. if its a 2hr movie thats perfect, standard recording time is 2hrs. I'll just play the DVR and press the record button on the DVD-R.
The manual isn't that bad if you sit down and read it instead of skimming through or jumping from section to section. It doesn't really take that long, and will ease your use, and lessen any frustration later.
This product has... Great DVD upconversion, Good connection options, Easy to use controls, remote well organized, fits well will other standard components

What's great about it: Allows you to edit out commercials and rerecord over previously recorded dvds
What's not so great: I havent found anything bad about it so far
I just bought this unit today. I hooked it up and recorded a hour long video that I had on my DVR. When I played it back, there was no picture. Turns out I had it hooked up wrong, so I rehooked it up and then rerecorded the program and it worked. I wanted a recorder that I could edit out the commercials (during the recording process) from the video I had on my dvr and this unit let me do that. Also it allows you to record something to dvd, then if you dont like the way it recorded you can rerecord (using a dvd-r disc) over the existing video as long as you dont finalize the disc.
This product has... Good connection options, ability to edit out commercials during recording

What's great about it: simple to use, low price, great upscaled DVD playback Quality vie HDNI cable
I am very impressed with this DVD recorder. I use it to record cable programs and it does this very easily and with good video quaility. It is not HD quality of course but about what you would expect from something off the Satalite. I have replaced my older unit that never worked like this even when it was new. It has had many malfuntions resulting in wasted time and discs. Best Buy shipped it to me free in less than a week because it was unavailable in the store.

What's great about it: good pix, able to unconver
What's not so great: Menu system, editing capabilities
Toshiba writes lousy manuals and tech support is useless. Only answer I could get from them: "That's the way the engineers designed it" which is dumb to the extreme.
The unit's picture quality is great. It supposedly has great editing options but only for VR mode which is not playable on anything else which means that is useless.
Will only do 16:9 on -R or -RW??? +R or +RW only will do letterbox???
Half the manual is on editing which as I stated above can only be done in VR mode. In DVD mode, even the top title menu goes to nothing more than a text line when the disc is finalized. I will probably keep the unit since places that carry recorders is about extinct.

What's not so great: Stopped working after 4.5 months
I purchased this DVD player in late September 2010, it stopped working on 2/5/11 (after 4.5 months of minimal use), I contacted Toshiba's customer service and they were rude and unhelpful and said there was nothing they could do, because the warranty was only for 90 days. I will never buy another Toshiba product.

I purchased this item to store my favorite shows on, as our DVR was getting full. the directions are a bit confusing, but after I got it somewhat figured out, I got it to record through the back input. a day or two later I tried it again and only got sound on the recording, no picture. I had to run the cable through the front input in order for it to record properly. When Playing DVD movies, the unit has a very load operating noise, somewhat distracting. I will be taking this item back this weekend. Great Idea for me, just not that user friendly and apparently lacking on quality as well.

What's great about it: NOTHING
What's not so great: All must everything
The dvd recorder does work correctly. I just returned this same one and exchanged it for a new one and I still have the same problem. When you are recording and you pause the recorder to say, cut out a commerical, you then hit the pause botton again it records with NO SOUND, then if you hit the pause botton again it's OK. It took 1 month and alot of wasted space on my dvds and MY WASTED TIME TO FIGURE THAT ONE OUT. It must me a glitch from the manufacturer. Over all I really don't like how the product works in general. Now I have to return it for a 2nd time a try and find something different ONLINE because BEST BUY and other stories don't carry dvd recorders in there stories.

What's great about it: Easy installation
What's not so great: Two machines and neither one worked!
After reading the good reviews of this DVD recorder, I ordered one. Installation was very easy, but that's as far as it went. The unit did not work properly: audio was fine but no video. I called Toshiba for help; and after the tech confirmed I had installed properly, he decided the unit was faulty and recommened I exchange it, which I did at my local Best Buy. Once again installation was very easy. HOWEVER, the unit would not even turn on. I tried it in several electrical outlets, and it still would not power up. What a total waste of time! Two faulty units!

Purchased this to record the World Cup games in HD. Little did I realize that I would have the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen when recording in HD. The bars don't appear in SD. I was going to return it because of this but I actually got used to it. You can zoom using your TV's zoom feature and fill-up the screen but I didn't like the way it looked.
Overall, decent purchase for the price. Very easy to set-up and menus are simple and straight-forward.
The only negative is the remote. They definitely invested no money on making the remote but it does the job.
