I bought this item for my grandaughter and she just loves it. She is three years old but knows how to use it. She is more into the learning tools and music than the games. Her five year old brother loves it also becuase of the games that it has. Over all it is one of the best chistmas presents I have bought my grandkids.

What's great about it: durablility
What's not so great: for the price, its good.....
I read the reviews and decided to add mine (this is my first review ever!) Anyhow, my son just turned four years old. We have an IPAD, IPOD touch, laptops, smart phones, etc.....
I however like this product because it is very durable, he has dropped it many times. I agree with one of the people here about the IPOD Touch however, this is still something I use for him to practice handling electronic toys and at the same time to play learning games. I am able to hand this over with minumum supervision, plus it helps with his pencil grip.

What's great about it: It is a great learning tool.
We bought the explorer for our 4yr old for Christmas and she loves it. She plays it everyday and takes it with her everywhere she goes. Our almost 8yr old son likes it so well that we are going to get him one for his birthday. Its a great way to make learning fun for kids and it keeps them wanting to learn. I wish they would of had things like that when i was a kid.

What's great about it: Relatively low initial cost compared to other options
What's not so great: App cost, versatility
If you have an iPod Touch, don't bother.
I believe these systems may be approaching obsolescence. My point being we have a few iPod Touch's in our household, and they appear to be far more versatile than the LeapFrog Explorers we recently acquired. Granted, the Touch is higher in initial cost, but the total cost of ownership might be in the Touch's favor, given all it can do.
I'm sure the Leapster Explorer fills a certain niche, so you should certainly do your research and make up your own mind. However, for our edutainment purposes (letters and numbers for 3 yr old; reading, math, art, and logic for 5 yr old), the iPod Touch is clearly superior.

What's great about it: educational, and cheaper price than Nintendo DS
What's not so great: 1st one locked up; hope it was a fluke
I only gave this item 4 stars because my daughter has had two Leapster Explorers. The first one locked up on Christmas morning, and continued to lock up until we could exchange it. Luckily, Santa left a receipt. But, the new one that she has now is working great. And, so far, she absolutely loves it. The main comparison for the Leapster Explorer for me would be the Nintendo DS. I watched my little girl play with a family member's DS during her initial Leapster crisis, and she enjoyed it. But, she seems to enjoy the Leapster even more due to her age. Plus, the Leapster Explorer is half the price of the cheapest Nintendo DS. The games that she has are fun and inviting. Most of all, THEY'RE EDUCATIONAL. The 'Tangled' game seems to be very fun.
As for its durablility, its been dropped already and its still ticking. As for its 'usability', its very easy to grasp. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase that I, errr I mean Santa, made.

What's great about it: Price value, learning,
When my son was just shy of 3 years old, I bought him the original Leapster and I cannot tell you how much he has played, laughed and learned with this device! Last month, we received a top secret gaming system that my 5 year old is madly in love with; the new LeapFrog Leapster Explorer that is due to release in September.
* Right handed or Left handed? This might sound weird from anyone that doesn’t have a left handed child, but the first thing that I noticed about the new Leapster Explorer is that it has the ability to be used by a right handed child or a left handed child – right away. On the Leapster 2, the string was on the right side, for a right handed child. With the Leapster Explorer, the pen is able to be looped around either side, for either (left or right) handed child. Score! Great change, LeapFrog!
* Size & weight - I also noticed that the size was a bit smaller, not as bulky and the weight seemed lighter than the Leapster2. This is a plus, especially when I am toting this along in my purse for the kids when we travel.
* Performance - The Leapster Explorer is fast! The screen resolution is crisp, memory is larger and the processor is larger, hence the faster performance.
* Touchscreen – From my use with the Leapster Explorer, compared to the Leapster2, I think the touchscreen is easier to use. It’s more sensitive, which is a good thing.
* Games – My Son’s favorite game, so far, is Penguins of Madagascar. There are over 40 games available, and even more fun to download from the parents’ computer such as e-books and learning.
* Upgrades - There are so many things that you can buy extra to add on to the Leapster Explorer like a camera and many more additions!
Overall: we LOVE everything new about the LeapFrog Leapster Explorer! The price will be at just under $70.00 and the games are right around $25.00 each. With as much as my 5 year old has played his Leapster2 in the last 2 1/2 years, I can totally see the upcoming years of fun that he will have with the Explorer! The Leapster2 has a new owner, my 2 ½ year old… and she is one happy girl!

What's great about it: Very Kid Friendly, Love the size and all the apps
Being that we have been a fan of the Leapster 2, we were very excited to be some of the first to try out this new product. At first glance I just couldn't figure out what was so different between the Leapster 2 and the Leapster Explorer, then it arrived in the mail. Once I opened the main [...] box, the excitement grew in our house as my son immediately knew that this was a LeapFrog product! We immediately started playing with this product and I was blown away! The LeapFrog Explorer exceeded my expectations! The first thing that caught my eye before we ever turned the game on, was the size. It is such a friendly size and makes it perfect for little hands to hold. Here is a comparison of the Leapster 2 and the Leapster Explorer:Both are truly amazing products! Just because you may have either the Leapster or the Leapster 2 does not mean you shouldn't consider the Leapster Explorer as well!We recently got back from vacation and this was one product that was played with tons during the 7 hour drive to our location. It is just simple for little ones to use on their own and will keep them busy playing and learning. You can either play using catridge games or by downloading "apps" into it. My son's favorite game at this moment is Toy Story 3, but when it comes to the "app", he loves the Harmonies game. The harmony game allows him to conduct four singers while learning about harmonies and musical parts. Also, I want to point out that you can also download e-books from the Tag Library for the LeapFrog Leapster Explorer. The graphics are very fantastic for a child's handheld game on the Leapster Explorer. It uses Flash for great visual performance and a Linux-based operating system. The screen is large , bright , full-color and touch sensitive . It has internal memory of 512 MB and a download capacity of 250 - 300 MB. It has plenty of storage for gaming FUN!

What's great about it: Best bang for your buck
What's not so great: needs a more sensitive touch screen
We were sent the Leapster Explorer about a month and a half ago for review and review we have! My son has been playing the thing to death! If you want to know about wear and tear this thing is durable. It has been to Macon, Ga and back, Cincinnati and back, and has been toted outside, inside, and every where in between. The Leapster Explorer is meant for children ages 4-8, but my son is a pro with it at age 3. I will say, he was pretty prepared for this game system because he plays iPhone games frequently. So far, we have only had to change the batteries once (4 AA).
The Leapster Explorer works by using a touch screen. This is such a wonderful touch because it allows younger children greater ease with playing. Using a touch screen is just so much more intuitive than using buttons and controls. Besides, with the popularity of the iPhone and other touch screen phones, young kids already have experience. Of course, with the Leapster Explorer your child is learning while they are having fun. Some of my son's favorite games are: Sugar Bugs, Jewel Train, Harmonies, Pet Pad, Mr. Pencil Saves Doodleburg and watching LeapFrog's Letter Factory. Each game teaches things such as good dental habits, matching, harmonies in music, drawing lines and letters, and much more. Of course, there are cartridge games like Toy Story 3 and Disney Princesses that you can purchase. I really love the fact that you can download e-Books that work like the Tag Reader. You swipe the lines of text into the reader and press the book icon for the words to be read out loud and highlighted. This is great for word recognition! I also like the fact that there is the option to download LeapFrog videos for your child to watch. This is an excellent road trip item!
Of course, you can always connect the Leapster Explorer to your computer in order to see your child's "Learning Path" and see what they are excelling in and how you can better help them. Kids can connect to LeapWorld online in order to expand on what they are learning with the Leapster Explorer. I see that there will also be a camera/recorder attachment coming out! We haven't reviewed this of course, but it sounds exciting if it is easy for young kids to use.
Overall, I think that the Leapster Explorer is the best bang for your buck! It includes everything you could think of. It is like buying the Scribble & Write, Tag reader, a DVD Player, and educational video games all in one system. The only complaint I have is that sometimes the touch screen is not quite sensitive enough which could lead to frustration. It has only happened to my son on about 2 occasions, but then I showed him how to use the stylus and the frustration soon ended.

What's great about it: Kid Friendly, Educational, Keeps their Interest., Durable
What's not so great: wish it came with charger AND games were a bit less
was impressed with how they could personalize their own Leapster Explorer to match them; everything from the difficulty of the games by putting in their school grade to earning points to changing the backgrounds, music and other fun things.
It really is "push and play" like they say, my kids needed no direction from me on how to use it other than the power button!
My girls' favorite game was the Pet Pad. They were able to create and personalize their own pet and then earn points to feed, bathe, dress it up, etc. I loved the game 'Mr. Pencil Saves Doodleburg.' It was a fun way to get the girls into learning how to print their letters. Then in October I am going to buy the Camera Accessory that goes along with the Leapster Exlporer which will let them take photos and videos and do tons of fun things with them!
ALSO (very important part), it holds quite a bit of charge. I was very impressed with the charge life, although I do have to say that the charger needs to be included instead of an extra. That always drives me nuts. The games are great because they have lots of different levels and are tailored to your child. At the same time, I wish they were a few dollars less in price. I really do think the Explorer itself is fairly priced and is a fabulous product. It's the perfect size, the touch screen actually works with my girls' tiny fingers and the color & 3-D aspect to it is top notch. It's also extremely sturdy, perfect for ages 4 to 9 and just a whole lot of fun!
* I was given a leapster to review with my family

What's great about it: hand held game feel, graphics, entertaining
What's not so great: battery frainer, stylus may become unattached
First I want to start by disclosing that my family received a free Leapster Explorer to provide our own review.
Let's start by saying that my kids are pretty much Leapfrog kids. They have grown up with leapsfrog baby toys, fridge magnets, leappad, leapster, anything and everything made by Leapfrog we have it because I have always believed in the brand
My oldest is five and this toy has been a HUGE hit. we have leapster and he was not as interested on it as he is on this. The leapster explorer has a great handheld game feel to it. The graphics are exceptional and the games are fun. The toy came with a couple of games preloaded and he has been begging me for more games but they are not available yet. However those few games available have kept him entertained for HOURS. My middle child who is 2.5 years old gets a chance to play with it and the life skill games like the sugar bugs game has been a hit and just perfect for his age.
I have found a couple of drawbacks to this toy. First it's a big battery drainer. Like I said my 5yo loves to play with it so we have gone through several rounds of batteries already. You can buy a recharger for an additional charge. the copy I received did not have that.
Perhaps the biggest drawback I found on this game was the stylus. Unfortunately the stylus is not one piece and in my case the pen has come off the top, which means lost pen VERY often. I have already contacted Leapfrog about this and they said to just contact them once the game is officially out for a replacement. In my experience Leapfrog customer service has always been responsive to any inquiries. If by any chance you experience the same don't hesitate to ask for a replacement.
In conclusion, we will be buying additional games and leaplets for this game for our sons to play with. I intend to follow up to have the stylus replaced as well. This is a great toy for kids.

What's great about it: There are so many ways to learn
What's not so great: It falls out of my 3 year olds hands easily, no hand grips
My girls fight over who is going to use this every single day. We've had to flip coins to settle the battle, they love it.
I love it as much as my kids. Leap Frog pretty much took like 4 different units and put them all in one. I like how there are games and then apps too that are more detailed in what they do.
My 5 year old likes making her pets in pet pads and keep asking me to download more stuff for her pets.
My 3 year old is learning to write letters and loves playing sugar bugs which teachers her about brushing her teeth.
Their favorite game right now is Toy Story and my 5 year old has earned a few badges and is very proud of it. I like how excited they get when they earn a new reward.
Speaking of rewards, I'm SO GLAD you can sign in to your own profile so the rewards are specific to the child. Having a 5 year old and a 3 year old there's a big difference. I want to be able to see how each of them is doing separately.
The screen is huge and the colors and look of everything is awesome.
I have only one thing I don't like about it, the shape. It's very hard for my 3 year old to hold and it easily slips out of her hands.
We've really enjoyed playing with this and I'm happy with what my girls can learn with it. Leap Frog once again has not disappointed me.
(I received a FREE unit from Leap Frog for my family and I to review).

What's great about it: Easy to Use, Graphics are incredible
What's not so great: Tiny Bit Heavy
LeapFrog sent us an Explorer to review with my sons. I have 4 boys - 5, 4, 3 and 2 years old. I'm very much an old-school "learning" mom. I prefer sitting and reading an actual book. I also love sitting at the table and practicing letter and number writing. That's how I was raised. Though... I do appreciate and understand the modern technology in toys and think that it's fantastic that toys like the Explorer exist. We own 3 Leapster2's and 1 Didj... I really loved these educational toys because my sons were learning and having fun at the same time. There's something pretty incredible about that. I don't think they even know they were learning at the same time! This is perfect for kids ages 3-7... the package says 4, but my 3 yr-old loved doing the easier games.
My son William was the one who grabbed the Explorer and went to "work" on it. I wish I had captured a photo of the 4 of them on the couch all sitting and watching William play. The graphics are incredible, very appealing. A feature I love is that your child gets to build his learning ability. If questions are too easy, they become a little more challenging. It's the perfect tool for William.
I wasn't sure how LeapFrog was going to enhance the Leapster2, but I have to say - I am beyond impressed. Anything that can capture the attention of 4 little boys... while there's learning going on (and the TV is off!), I love.
Not to mention... this is PERFECT for travel. We took a trip to Cape Cod (2 hours away) and my son William played the whole way. It's still a tiny bit heavy, but I can overlook that.
I would recommend this to a friend!
