I purchased the Powershot SX130 a day before i went on vacation. With not much time to learn alot about it i took most pictures on Auto.Very simple to use, took great pictures.Friends have told me i should enter some of the pictures in a photo contest they are so good. I actually took most of them from a moving vehicle with only a FEW being blurry(i took many).I have not used many of the features yet but what i have, i am already very satisfied with my purchase and would suggest to any beginner to buy it. Great Pictures!
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great for beginners
Cons: not really heavy but not slim either alittle bulky
I would recommend this to a friend!

Gift

I got this camera as a gift, right out of the box it is so easy
to get started. I click on menu and all the functions are
right there easy to setup the shots I want to take. I even
played with the video this to was amazingly easy. I read other reviews saying they need a manual but the instructions that came with mine helped alot. In fact I did
most of my searching and exploring of the camera
before I ever looked at the instruction booklet.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

1 Flaw: No Viewfinder
on February 27, 2011

This camera takes excellent images, better than the SX30IS I also purchased (Compared the images side-to-side: The 130 has truer color and less noise than the 30 which has too many MP in a sensor that small, but that's for another review).
Unfortunately, Canon did away with a viewfinder on nearly all of their P&S. If this camera had a viewfinder, it would be perfect--portable, light, great zoom range, and great photographs. But without the viewfinder it's difficult to take images in low light without shake, and the large LCD + only 2 AA batteries means it goes through batteries quite quickly and without recourse. In previous models, the 1100 IS for example (a decent little camera for its price), I could switch to viewfinder when the batter was getting low to extend the shooting life.
I travel a fair amount and I don't always trust the circuitry of the countries I visit to not blow out a rechargable battery, but I know I can get AA's anywhere in the world. Having AA's is a huge bonus and I love that Canon has kept some of the AA's in its arsenal, but in a big LCD without the viewfinder, it makes it a liability.
Ultimately, I got too frustrated with the lack of viewfinder in a double-A and had to return the camera. Had it had that viewfinder, it would have been a sure-fire favorite.
One other thing: the lens is a little slow, making it hard to get depth with a wide aperture. I understand the zoom length necessitates a higher f/, but the SX210 and 230 have smaller bodies, a longer zoom, and a faster lens.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life, no viewfinder
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Always wanted a big gun like a Canon.

WOW! I attend college at IADT online. my major is in computer graphics. The school decided they wanted everyone in my visual composition class to all be on the same page with there equipment and sent every one in our class a new power shot SX 130 IS. I've always wanted a Canon and later this summer I was planning on buying this same model.
Well now I don't have to the school saved me the trouble.
All the information I have read about this little camera got me to thinking could it be true that a camera company like Canon has actually made a camera that has a built in zoom lens that actually works like it should,That can take wide angle shots that look like wide angle shots, that has a real set of working color filters to create professional looking color filtered photos with, that is adjustible from one mode to the next and has a wide range of modes to choose from including video?
Well let me tell you what. this camera does everything I read about and a lot more. Saturday I was out taking photos with it. and from the highway to the ski slope where I used to ski is about three miles. I fired up the camera and pointed it up over the tree tops to the to the northern three slopes. in auto mode with out adjusting the lens I got a nice full shot of the entire mountain. At 25 % zoom I got the three slopes closest to me. At 50%I could almost see the lift chairs. at 75% the lift chairs could be seen. at 100% of the zoomI could tell you what color the lift chairs were and weather it was a metal or wooden lift chair. And the photos I got where great to.I only have found to downsides with this camera, asside from the fact I can't change the lens, a regular ba Duracel won't last very long. how ever a lithium battery I have found is the way to go, I just wish it would do my windows..lol
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life, no carring case, and the carrying strap could be better made.
I would recommend this to a friend!

How Sweet It Is...

I had purchased this yesterday for my daughter's NJHS induction and I had only one hour to figure this thing out and I had the basics figured out in 30 minutes and had set the options...time, date, month, etc. I was looking at a different camera but when I was told it was on sale that was why I got it plus I was told that it really was a great camera to what the heck I got it. I was so surprised how crystal clear the pictures looks when I go back to review them on the LCD screen, it makes you feel like a pro. You will not be disapointed with this camera. The only thing I don't like about it is the batteries it takes. It takes AA and when you go to shoot video it drains the batteries faster. It was recommed to me to get a battery that is a "ultimate lithium", now I haven't tried to shoot a video with them yet so can say how those worked out. From what I can tell, with the short time of use, I will love this camera even more once I figure out all the other stuff I can do with it.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

Great Camera

I was abled to use the camera right out of the box with out even reading the quick start guide. However, after reading the guide I was impressed at all the features and manual settings there are and how easy it is to use the many features. For its size it is lightweight - I hope that doesn't equate to flimsy construction. Time will tell. I like the big LCD screen and easy to use zoom lever. Battery life appears to be pretty good - am using rechargeables. Like that fact I can just go to almost any store and pick up extras with out having to charge a proprietary battery pack. I took a bunch of pictures and they all came out great!
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use

Great photos but.....

Great little camera. I replaced my last camera because of the noise found in most all of the images I took. I read reviews of this cameras picture quality and have to agree. The pictures are VERY sharp with accurate colors and lack of noise found in any of the images i have taken so far. A big difference from my last camera. The 12x optical zoom lens is great and it is nice to zoom with your camera not your feet. I must also mention the optical image stabilization is fantastic in this camera as well. Now for the bad part and you probably already have heard others mention it. The battery life is terrible using alkaline batteries. However i must say once you used up the two alkaline batteries that come with the camera, who is going to use alkaline batteries after that? Most people will switch to longer lasting rechargeables. So it's not that bad and most people don't take over 50 shots at a time anyway. I just got back from a trip to Blowing Rock, NC near the Blue Ridge Parkway and I did not come back with one bad shot due to the cameras fault. When in auto mode this camera shines. You will be hard pressed to find a camera that will take better pictures and have all these options for a camera you can find in this price range. No camera is perfect and this camera is no exception for example the battery life and minus an optical view finder however it does take Excellent pictures and at the end of the day thats what you want!
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life
