A really good overall camera.

I bought this camera new May 2012 and it has performed flawlessly since. The flip out screen is very nice for awkward angle shots, the shutter is quiet (quieter than my 70D) and the 9 point autofocus is fast very accurate. Autofocus via live view uses contrast detect and is quite a bit slower but accurate. Exposure metering is very accurate and plays well with my Canon flashes. (580 EX II, 420 EX and 270 EX II) The IR wireless slave flash control is very useful. Does not focus like a camcorder when shooting video. Need a 70D, 7D MkII or Rebel T4i or later for that. (See my 70D review). Ergonomics and menus are very good. You can repurpose most of the buttons on the back too. Uses "multi controller" as opposed to a joystick on previous xxD models. Nice fit for my hands and my wife's who inherited this camera when I got a 70D.

Best DSLR for video to date...
on March 17, 2012

I shoot almost exclusively video, and Canon DSLRs have been the client-requested tool for a few years now. I have used the 5D MkII and 7Ds on tiny and broadcast projects alike; when it came time to buy my own camera, I selected the 60D. The video on the 60D is indistinguishable from that of the 7D. The form factor is superior; the flip out / orientable LCD screen solves THE major headache using the bigger cameras. While the 5Ds are superior for stills, the 8 perf ( 'full frame " to still shooters ) format is NOT video friendly... the APS-C sensor cameras are comparable to 35mm cine film, and based on the unchangeable math of lenses, it's the "proven" format to work well for scripted and some off the cuff work, usually with glass from 18-85mm. The two things that could be better : the 60D inexplicably uses SD cards and not CF cards. The camera body could be alloy not composite, and weather sealed... perhaps a 7D MKII will come along and incorporate all the features. I won't suggest obvious video-friendly additions like XLR mic plugs... Canon already makes great " real" video and cinema camera gear at twice the price of their premium DSLRs; the price point the DSLRs and 60D are in simply makes them the still camera you want to own because they are capable of some amazing video imagery. The entire line would benefit for an HDMI clean output and connectors other than HDMI, as well as the ability to feed an output ( monitor or recorder ) while maintaining live view on the camera's own LCD.
Dolllar for dollar... 60D is the best camera I have ever owned in 35 years of shooting.. and some of my cameras cost over $20,000.
Pros: superb quality for dirt cheap
Cons: h264 is lone video available; it's not true hd
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great all around camera

I bought My 60D 3 months ago.Brand new to me and I have not regretted the money well spent,
The egonomics for one are good for someone with large hands, the grippy texture helps to hold the solid heft of the camera with a 70 to 300 EF lens at work..this is no studio queen..this is out of doors, on the field and in the weather.
Never fails.
Ive two lenses..the mentioned 70 to 300 and an 18 ro 135 EF-S.
Beautiful captures in extremely low light conditions,
If you work your craft, get to know the Camera, you will not be disappointed with the excellent results.
Lightning shots, stars, eclipses..all are in your grasp.
Sunsets are an extreme joy to capture in full manual mode.
Colors are rendered faithfully as you desire.
In full auto mode, it is easy to get the wow factor shots as well.
Video is a wonder as well.
Need a Black and White movie? Why yes, again, in full manual mode, you can.
There is only one drawback..
A monaural mic.
That is easily rendered moot by adding any stereo mic available to be kitted to the 60D.
Shoot both Jpeg and RAW, single and both at same time.
This Camera will go where ever you are ready to go..when you are ready to go.
The Battery life of the OEM battery is amazing!
As for bumps, and bruises..sadly i dropped it last week.
The material is physically discolored..that is it. The Camera works perfectly, the fall was onto the floor from the center console of a 11 F 250 onto the rubber floormat..a distance of around a foot.
It may not sound like much...but it did impact, and still works.
I would recommend this Camera to everyone.

Great Camera

Chose the 60D over the 7D due to the flip out screen and have not regretted it in any way. Yes you lose a few focal points and a couple of frames per second but it lighter, and even though many complained about losing some buttons I find the controls very simple. The larger size compared to the rebel series fits my hand better and I feel it gives me a steadier platform which is handy as I shoot handheld almost all the time.
The video is very nice, I have not used it enough to say more.
Don't let the plastic case vs the metal of the previous D series concern you much. I've had mine below Niagara Falls soaking wet with no ill effect and it has handled days on the beach in varying weather, hiking and exposure to grand-kids. I would not recommend the latter mind you, but stuff happens! I feel that any impact that would damage it would kill about any camera, its that solid.
Picture quality is amazing, low light exposures compared to pocket cameras and film cameras will startle you. It makes it easy to freeze a bumble bee in flight, shoot fireworks, or grab those graduation pictures in a poorly lighted gym.
I could go on, and have, as you can guess I am extremely happy with my 60D.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, size makes for a good grip
Cons: like to see better lense package offered

Hard to fault
on March 4, 2011

It's hard to fault this camera, especially for the price. I wanted something like the 7D, but with a little less weight and a bit more compact for traveling, and with a bit more control and "quality" than the T2i (I have all three cameras). The 60D feels very nice, quite similar in feel to the 7D. I've been using the 60D mainly with the 15mm-85mm EF-S lens, but it works very nicely with the excellent 70-200mm F/2.8 IS II lens. Pictures are well saturated, crisp, not over-sharpened, and the 60D handles a wide range of exposures well, from 30-second night exposures to 1/4000 sec sports photos without any problems. Noise is well controlled up to ISO 800, begins to become noticeable at ISO 1600. I don't recommend ISO 3200+ for anything but low quality snap-shots. ISO 100 shots are absolutely stunning at all exposure durations. Battery life is extremely impressive. This is a serious alternative to the 7D, especially for the weight conscious photographer who doesn't want to give up the control features of the 7D. Video is up to par with the 7D. Highly recommended!
Pros: excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: hard to find much wrong

Glad I made the Move
on March 7, 2012

I finally made the decision to upgrade my camera. I am using a CANON T2i/550D and even though I love this smaller camera, I wanted more. The decision took me about a month of reading, asking questions and then going to my local store and actually seeing the 60D & 7D. I decided on the 60D and I have not looked back. The first things I noticed was the size compared to the T2i, Yea it’s bigger, but it also feels better built.
The swivel LCD screen is something that I had seen on the T3i, but I wanted something other than that, if I was going to add another Body. The swivel screen has been a help in allowing me to take photo’s and video’s in crowded places or in a museum when there was no place to stand by myself.
The video is the same quality as my Rebel T2i, but shoots in .MOV. I am going to find software to convert the .MOV files.
The biggest items that caught my eye were the AF process of using all
9 AF points for cross focusing to give you a better focusing image and more flexibility. The T2i only had the center point as a cross focus point.
The quick control screen allows for using different ambient shooting in certain modes like CA, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sport and Night Portrait. This allows you to select the different Ambience you want the photo to take. I have tried these and it is amazing the differences it makes to the photo. I took the same shot over and over and the results were very good, and each Ambience has 3 setting levels. Also included are the Creative filters for changing the look of the photo while still in the camera.
The next option that I found useful was setting up the continuous shooting function. There are 2 choices: Low-speed [3fps] and High-speed [5.3fps] so you have the ability to select what you feel is good for where you are. Certain scene modes can use these options, but others cannot. Portrait is Low-speed and Sport is only High-speed
The camera focuses quickly, and the photo’s are outstanding. When I get a bad photo, I can check in Photoshop and see what my setting were and then I can blame myself for the bad photo. I am still on the battery charge from when I bought the camera and that is about 1,500 photo’s ago. It is very easy to make changes as this camera has most of the same settings as the T2i, in the way you make the changes. I really like the top mounted LCD screen for when I want to make a quick change to AF mode, ISO, Drive mode and when in P, Av, Tv, M modes.
On the CON side is Live Mode, as it is slower and not a good option for me. I am not a fan of this, so it is strictly personal.
Pros: build quality, speed, iq, performance, features
Cons: live view

My favorite camera so far

This is my 4th Canon SLR and I love it! I got the 60D when it launched and I have not been disappointed yet. It's a little heavy, but I expect that in a good product. I use it for weddings, portraits, landscapes, macro, travel, sports, everything. It goes with me everywhere I go. It's easy to use, there is a ton of different functionality so you can personalize it to your needs. Paired with the right lens you can capture absolutely amazing photos. I am more than pleased with this camera. I am sure there are bigger and better out there, but for the price and options it's a great investment!
