What's great about it: Fast at first
What's not so great: Hardware quality
Here is a list of things that, within the first year (most within the first 6 months) that failed on this computer:
Left click on trackpad
Right click on trackpad
Touch sensitivity on trackpad
S key
Space Bar
Webcam
CD Drive open/close functionality
(pops open when touched even lightly)
CD Drive usability
Left Monitor Hinge
Ability to come out of hibernation
(after 3 months, freezes before loading)

What's great about it: Great quality for price
What's not so great: touch pad
For what 99% of us use laptops for (email, social networking, MS office programs, etc.), this computer fulfills all desires. I am happy I was swayed by the salesman based on the HDMI port, which I now use all the time, and 7200rpm HDD. The RAM is sufficient and can be expanded if desired.
Some of the Asus default power settings are kinda weird, like it will change the background to all white upon switching to a battery saving scheme. Kinda counter-intuitive to me, but it wasn't too hard to change.
An Asus feature that is decent is the Fastboot which is an easy interface for choosing which programs you don't need to run upon startup. You can do this through by running "msconfig" on pretty much any windows computer, but it's more detailed.
Battery power, display, and processor are sufficient.
Speakers can be weak, depending on what media source is used, but most of the time they do just fine.
I'm disappointed in the touchpad a bit, only because a feature it promises does not work for me. You can program different commands, such as a double-finger tap, to perform different operations. I wanted that particular command to perform "internet back", but it doesn't work. The pad will also occasionally cease to work for a few seconds.
I like the outer casing because it shows no fine scratches.
Sorry for the sporadic review, but hopefully it gets the message across

What's not so great: The sound isn't the best but it works for individual use
I purchased this computer after I graduated from college. This is my first laptop and I love it! It is very fast and convenient. I was very happy with the price as well. It is the perfect computer for everyday work and school use.

What's great about it: looks, keyboard functionality
What's not so great: reliability
Machine crashed after approximately 8-9 months after purchase. I spent hours with Asus and other help services trying to find a solution. Asus eventually agreed to accept the return under warranty. There was a problem with the disk drive an/or the reading mechanism. Price is very competitive, but concerned about reliability and will carefully consider future purchases. Much time and energy was lost during this process.

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Speakers sucks and OS restore partition sucks
This is one great laptop. Fast , very light nice ease of use. But like others have stated the speakers are very bad The SRS system is just really off. If you install Win 7 Ult version and reinstall the driver the speakers sound abit better. I hate the hard drive partition reinstall. Should get at least the drivers cd. But no big issue 10 mins on Asus website and got all the 32bit drivers for Win 7 Ult I installed the Win 7 Home Prem 64bit stinks running the 64bit you have more junk running and if you reinstall the oem os you have alot of junk wear. I suggest not using the factory os but save the factory drivers pack that is under the C:/ folder. I removed the partition of the factory os gives you 7gb more space. Other then that this computer is very nice and great for Linux or windows.

What's great about it: Size, Speed, and Screen
What's not so great: Speakers and Touchpad
I use this laptop mostly for college courses and didn't think that the poor speaker quality, mentioned in other reviews, would be an issue. I was wrong and needed to use headphones or an add on speaker in order to watch videos for a class.
The touchpad was also an issue for me. It seemed that it needs to be pressed harder than on other touchpads in order for the finger to register. The sensitivity could never quite be adjusted properly an the cursor will move a little as I remove my finger. This instability makes it difficult for precision movements. I also had to disable the option that a double tap on the pad equates to a click of the button.
The laptop has a wide, good screen, and decent battery life, it is fast, and has HDMI out. The integrated numeric pad is a good feature. I also liked that the function keys actually work as a function key; I like using keyboard shortcuts. The volume control is used by holding a fn key plus the appropriate function key.

What's great about it: Price, Battery Life
What's not so great: Built in Video Card
I got this laptop, because I was in desperate need for a fast performing cheap Laptop. I had a Mac before this, but had some issues with defective video card on that...
Im a architect Student thats always working on CAD and photo manipulation software, when I couldn't buy the i5 of this series of ASUS, I got scared because of some bad reviews around this laptop. The built in video card was a big turn off, since I hoped to upgrade when the money was around. So with a hesitant hearth I started using my new Asus.
It was with great feelings that after using this laptop since December, that its still delivering great performance, I can have open Autocad 2011, Photoshop, Google sketchup and Google Chrome, and it not freezes over, sure it lags a little, but it does quite well. I can render in this easily and it does NOT heat and burn my fingers off.
The laptops does struggle when you try to play MMORPG's so, yeah, good working just don't ask more wonders on the video card. The sound is a little strange since the speakers are place in front and around the keyboard, so headphones or speakers are a must.
So, good working Laptop, "Meh" playing laptop, and the built in camera reminds me of 5 years back resolution. Also the keyboard tends to sink a little when you type, very off putting of first, but grown used to it.

What's great about it: Scalability
What's not so great: On-Board GPU.
Picked this up over Black Friday last year as a secondary computer; one to be used primarily for travel purposes. It wasn't practical to pack up my gaming desktop just to have something to use for flying home so, this was what I went with.
Asus makes good motherboards, which I use in my desktop(s). Thus I opted to give their pre-builts a go. In general, it was a good laptop for it's price and purpose.
I needed it for basic stuff, which most any laptop can do just fine - Web, Email, and Word Processing. As for the gaming aspect it handled lower end and scalable games well.
It had an on-board graphics processor, so this unit is going to be playing Crysis anytime soon. On the other hand, since it uses shared memory (and the memory can be upgraded to 6 Gigs, I believe) in theory, you could boost the installed RAM and let the graphics have a little elbow-room.
Overall, I think it's a great unit for either a secondary machine or an entry level laptop, with gaming possibilities. I actually wound up returning the unit because another manufacturer was running a better deal on a post-Black Friday sale for a gaming laptop, proper.

What's great about it: Price, Power, Style
What's not so great: Bouncy keyboard, strange I/O placements
This is my first laptop since my Dell from probably 2002, so was was in dire need for an upgrade. Win7 runs pretty fast, and fairly light (if you turn off a lot of the bells and whistles). The laptop is light weight and feels good.
Little Annoyances:
The power plug is on the side, near the back. Since I use wired mice, I have to make sure I clear the wire of the protruding power plug. Not a big deal. But there are NO I/O on the back, which is where I would prefer most of that stuff - out of sight and out of the way.
The DVD tray on the right side is also a small problem when using a wired mouse.
I would prefer the headphone jack not be so close to the front of the unit.
The keyboard, as others have mentioned, does 'rebound' a little when typing. I've since gotten used to iut over the last 4 weeks.
These little things gave me pause at first; wondering if I made the right purchase. But now that I have grown into it, I actually really like it alot and hope to use it for several years.

What's great about it: Price
What's not so great: Speakers, and reliability
I have had too many problems with this computer from the start. I am an electronics engineer and while I'm not an IT specialist, I work on computers and networks daily. This computer locks up frequently and requires a hard reboot. It usually takes 4 or 5 reboots to get it back up and running. It also constantly does disk consistancy checks on start up. I'm also very disappointed with the sound quality. The audio is extremely quiet and hard to hear. The quality of the camera is not good either. I guess you get what you pay for. I read reviews that this was a good value for the money. If it weren't for the problems that I've had I would agree, but can't.

What's great about it: It works well. Good operating system. No junk programs.
What's not so great: Battery life, weight.
We like it but it's battery life is a little short. We only get 2 hours out of a charge. Thats just email and surfing, no videos or music. We like the fact that there were NO junk programs installed by the manufacturer. Windows 7 is very nice. The touchpad is easy to use. The built in camera works well in good lighting.

What's great about it: Performace isn't that bad for a laptop
What's not so great: Hard drive and/or motherboard not lasting more than 2 weeks.
CONS: Less than 2 weeks after I got this laptop I had problems, still need to take it in and make sure that it is the hard drive like I think it is. High pitch sound coming out around that area and than just locks up on what ever screen I was on, mostly when I am browsing. We will see if it is that or the mother board, either way I get to do 2 weeks or more with out it and than if it is the hard drive I get to reinstall all the programs back on it and I can't install any more until than.
That is the only complaint I have with it.
Don't like how load the external speakers are, watching movies with it is a little harder to do.
PROS: Great price for what it was, so far their Customer Service has been great. Love the way that it has a separate number pad off to the left like most keyboards. Like the built in web cam, like how much better it preforms than my last laptop that was 8 years old. Even comparing with an 8 year old laptop I still don't think it is that bad.

What's great about it: Lot's of features for a really great price, well made!!
What's not so great: Win 7
One of life’s rare occasions when you get a lot more than you paid for!!
I was looking for a laptop for gift to a woman who just wanted to e-mail, online shop, pay bills, and maybe Google maps etc. So I didn't want to spend Big$$$ for features that she didn’t need so then, so I started looking at the low end$$.
Then I saw the ASUS!! Great Price, (I suspect some might have shied away from a slightly unfamiliar laptop brand of ASUS brand however, those of us that build their own power machines know that ASUS motherboards are top of the line) I'm using one right now!!
Anyway this laptop is no basic bear bones machine, plenty of RAM, great graphics, wi-fi, video cam, etc etc..
(Now if It only had an option for Win-XP, I’d buy another for myself...)

What's great about it: Good price for the configuration.
What's not so great: Weight & size.
Initially it ran great but after a couple weeks I had 2 anti-virus running. So, it would stall frequently. But once I got rid one one anti-virus, things started running smooth again. A decent computer for the price. Love the island keys (a little hard to get used to) although they are a little on the noisier side. Display is great, plays DVD and movies good. Sound quality is good as well. For a portable item, it is heavier. Had it for 2 months and like it so far. Good buy for the price.

What's great about it: Great price and its fast
What's not so great: The keyboard is tight and the battery life isn't the best
Everything works really nice.
The keyboard is a little tight but you just have to get use to it.
I really like the fact that its really light and easy to just grab and go.
Its great for a student who uses the computer as their life source. It is a great computer; it runs fast and has yet to freeze.
