It worked as advertised; right at 2.5 hours for a 15 pound turkey starting at 51 degrees (breast probe temp). I used the lid grating for the last 10 minutes or so but the turkey was browning pretty nicely without it. This is about the same time I usually spend cooking a similar sized turkey in the oven or smoking it on my grill.
It was a little unusual in the temp profile. In the first hour it only went up 12 degrees, then went up 65 degrees during the second hour. I say "unusual" because when smoked on my grill or cooked in the oven, the temperature rise is pretty easy to fit to a straight line. Yes, I'm a bit of a food nerd and plot temp vs. time on a spreadsheet so I can usually predict the endpoint time after the first hour of cooking. Because so much of the temperature rise was on the back end, it was difficult to gauge early on and I was worried it was going to be very late.
Turns out, I didn't need to worry and everyone enjoyed their on-time, nicely cooked turkey.
Some other comments:
This seems pretty fuel efficient. I've run it right at 6 hours so far (always on high) and can't tell much difference in the tank weight. I see fuel efficiency is a common question here so I will continue track tank time and comment later on the total I get. (Unfortunately I did not independently verify the tank weight before starting, but the place I refill at is pretty honest, so I doubt they're shorting refills like some places do.)
I put some apple and pear wood chips in the bottom of the basket but didn't get much smoke from them. I mapped the temp top to bottom with a probe while running it empty and found the bottom airtemp is not very hot compared to the temp toward the middle/top of the chamber. So maybe that's why. Next time I'll try notching some chips and sticking them on the basket wires about midway up.
Note the airtemp at the 4 elliptical slots on the top rim is very hot when running. I laid a wood chip over one and it charred after just a few minutes. So if you're using a wired probe thermometer, make sure the wire crosses the top rim in between these slots, not laying over one of them.

excellent cooker but needs to be tweeked

The product is really good and i never had a bad turkey yet. Raves everytime and called the best turkey they have ever eaten. Only problem is when you drop the bird in the cage it slumps over making it hard to get the thigh area cooked all the way through. So i pierce the leg and thigh area where the blood would normally gather and i shove a large skever from one side of the rib cage to the other sticking out enough to catch the sides of the turkey basket but not enough to touch the sides. I then center the turkey keeping its rump from touching the bottom. I line up the cavity opening with the hole in the bottom of the fryer so all the juices go into the tray below for making gravy. A 24 hour brine , no salt butter under the skin and the bird coated in olive oil gives an extremely crispy skin and an absolute tender bird. Little bit of fresh cracked pepper on the outside is all you need.

Always deep fried turkeys for thanksgiving it was dangerous and expensive. Since I purchased this new Char-Broil I have cooked six or seven turkeys and they look and taste as good as the deep fried ones. Its easy prep the bird, place in the basket, start the cooker and just time it. No need to sit around wondering if an oil fire would erupt from the deep fryer

The Best Kept Secret in BBQing

I've owned this product for a few years now....I've cook just about everything you can thing of in it and always prefect. One of my favorite is cooking a whole pineapple...turn the Big Easy high, drop in the pineapple for 40-45 minutes, pull it out and chill it. It will be the best pineapple you've have eaten.

Originally I was skeptical of Char-Broils claims of their Oilers Turkey Fryer being efficient, easy to use and good tasting results. I had been deep frying turkeys for years and always hated the constant attention required and messy clean-ups afterwards. I was completed sold on my new Char-Broil Air Fryer after its first use! It definitely lived up to all the claims both from Char-Broil and other customer reviews.

Needs better documentation

I bought this on the advice of a couple of friends, and it works well. The instructions that come with it are very limited, both for installation and cooking. I went to Youtube and the Char-Broil web site and that helped, but better documentation that comes with the fryer are needed.
I just spoke to one of the friends today and he gave me some advice on when to use the lid. That shouldn't be a secret, or something you have to go to Youtube or friends to find.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The best ever...

I was looking for a turkey fryer online about 3 months ago when I found The Big Easy. I have used it at least once if not twice every weekend. Its an excellent alternative to unhealthy frying, and the results are a refreshing change from everyday barbecuing. Its a revolutionary way to cook and each usage I get increasingly better and creative. We love the results from our Big Easy. So far we've cooked pork ribs, sockeye salmon, beef ribs, chicken, roast beef, and grilled hamburgers, and corn in the husk. The meat is fantastic, smoked and cooked evenly once you learn how to regulate the heat. Saving the juices and making gravy is something my family enjoys, and its also something you cannot do with a deep fryer. I haven't done a turkey yet, but when I do, I will start the bird on high heat for a spell, then turn the flame down, be patient and enjoy 2-3 beers while she turns into a juicy, golden brown bird. Once in a while I'll pop in and baste her in her own juices from the collecting tray I've had a lot of fun experimenting with the smoke or no smoke dishes too. I found that chicken is best just with a light rub. I cant believe how juicy the meat is, and how healthy it is to eat - without deep frying! I would highly recommend this cooker, and I would not hesitate in buying another one. Simply fantastic!!! Gotta go now - Man am I ever hungry :)
