Great Computer

The computer itself is awesome. It's very quick, it's very light and it runs cool. Coming from a four year old MacBook to the x230, I'm used to the island styled keyboard so I can't really say if it's better or not. My only gripe is not so much about the computer, but about manufacturing and customer service. The "H" key on my keyboard was loose when I got it. They keyboard has been replaced. I suggest that you get a warranty on this computer with onsite repairs as opposed to the basic warranty.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Meet / Exceed expectations

Being an X series user for over 4 years (X200, X201 and X220), I decided to buy one for my personal use. I customized it online and placed the order through the Lenovo website. When I received the machine, first thing I noticed was the HD camera which was not there. Calling the customer service they immediately sent me a UPS label to send the unit back and they placed another order with the camera. No questions were asked. After using the the machine for over 2 weeks now, I can say that despite all the reviews regarding the keyboard, I found it to be much more efficient than the previous model. It just takes a bit to get used to it. In my opinion the the only issue with the X230 would be the pricy options as opposed to other Lenovo models.
I was a bit worried when I ordered my X230 that the new keyboard wouldn't be as good as previous generation Thinkpads. Turns out the new island-style keyboard is excellent! Feels just as good, if not better, than the previous style found on my T520.
Very sturdy and well built through and through.
My only complaint is the track pad; it's too small for what it's trying to accomplish and the mutli-touch gestures just aren't polished. The trackpoint is much easier to use and navigate with.
If you want a machine that'll last forever, has excellent computational power, and can take a beating, this is the laptop for you.
dont purchase the ram upgrades form lenovo, easily installed post-shipment... and much much more cheaper.
have used the x220 prior to the x230...
keyboard change is not that big of a dealbreaker... bought this for college, incoming freshman this fall.
only main issue it customer service and shipping delays, error in checking order status. and a lot of lenovo site problems... they need to address all these service issues
There used to be a time where Thinkpads were the standard that all others were compared to...this is no longer the case. Lenovo has driven the Thinkpad line into the ground. Why would you change the keyboard on these when the existing keyboard was fine? Lenovo has also been cheapening out on the displays. My X301 display was HORRIBLE. The display on the X220/X230 are only 1366x768 while other brands are releasing 1920x1080 12" displays. The new "buttonless" trackpads ARE ABSOLUTELY USELESS. The hidden buttons don't work right, it's impossible to click drag, the trackpad is no responsive, etc., etc. Also, Lenovo has been cutting corners in durability. I had a T420s that suffered from a crack screen without any sort of impact damage. Lenovo has also cheapened their warranties and now require you to buy their extra "coverage" to cover things that should be in the basic warranty.
I've been a long time Thinkpad user (since the T40) and if Lenovo continues "HPing" these Thinkpads, they're going to continually loose long time customers like me.
Laptop size & performance is great, but I've been using this laptop for 3 days now, and still can't get used to the wristpad & trackpad.
WRISTPAD: I have small hands and they still sit on the edge off the laptop, especially if trying to use the trackpad, and wrists are sore quickly.
TRACKPAD: As others have said - trackpad just doesn't do it for me. Not responsive enough to be productive. Thought I just "had to get used to it" until I finally gave in and setup an external mouse. No problem if I was only using this laptop at home, but purchased specifically for size/portability with intent of carrying it around.
OVERALL: Don't make my mistake of thinking the short wristpad and bad trackpad won't be big issues - give some thought as to how much this will bother you!
OTHER: Poor quality of keyboard - when I received laptop, the sound keys on keyboard only work half the time. Disappointed.
Upgrading from my workhorse thinkpad X61, I was worried about a lot of things - especially, the island style keyboard and the new screen form-factor. But I fell in love with the machine very quickly. It is superfast, cool, very quiet (I never hear the noise at all), the screen quality is superb (no, I don't need more resolution, that some of the thinkpad fans wanted), sturdy. The sound has improved considerably, 2 USB3.0 Ports(!). It is worth the money.
Keyboard - that is something I want to praise and critique. It is very sturdy and feels solid, not flimsy at all. I like it - it is much better than I expected. However, I find the key travel to be limited. My fingers feel the hard stop when they come to a halt. It is fine for occasional typing, but if your job is all about writing and Word - the traditional Thinkpad keyboard feels better.
And I wish the screen was a little bigger - 13.3 instead of 13.1 without changing the notebook size. I am sure this can be done - the margins around it allow for it.
