give us back the old keyboard.
give us a higher resolution display (good panel, mate).
make a GOOD trackpad (see Apple), but leave a tracking point.
stop degrading build quality and bring it back to a high level.
flip the 'thinkpad' and 'lenovo' logos on the back, so they are actually readable when laptop is open!
no bloatware please.
then it's 5/5, or even 10/10
thanks lenovo!

Best in class enterprise ultraportable
on August 10, 2012

Let me start by stating that in my opinion the Lenovo X230 is simply the best enterprise class ultraportable – period.
Usually when you talk about ultraportable laptops, you start with lower voltage processors aimed at decreasing power consumption to increase battery life. That is not the case with the X230. It has a full voltage process, up to a Core i7, and yet maintains amazing battery life regardless of which battery option you select.
So the X230 is really a full powered, amazingly fast laptop in a small form factor. Having owned multiple ThinkPad laptops, this is by far the best display in terms of resolution and brightness (300 NIT). And the viewing angles are simply amazing.
Mine came with the Core i7 with 16GB RAM and is super quick and responsive. And I don’t recall ever hearing the cooling fan turn on during that time.
Everyone seems to have a negative opinion about the wristpad which I don’t quite understand. It is the exact same wristpad that Lenovo has used in previous X-series models. True, the wristpad on full size ThinkPad’s such as the T430 are larger and more comfortable, but the laptop is much larger as well. So the smaller wristpad is to be expected on a 12.5” form factor.
There is one problem area with all laptops in the X-series, and that is the button-less trackpad. There won’t be any gesturing, it simply is too small and I’ve had trouble getting it to right or left click when I want it to. I would say that it is average for a Windows laptop and an area where Lenovo needs to improve in future models.
I currently own several new Thinkpad laptops, and would not dream of traveling with any other than the X230. Trying carrying the T430/W530 around in a backpack. The X230 is under 4lbs with the 9-cell battery and can handle any task thrown its way.
I highly recommend this laptop to any business user
Pros: Weight, Security Features, Durability, Screen size, Build Quality, Display performance, Battery, Processor, Support, Memory, Keyboard/peripherals

Excellent Ultraportable

Pros - Perfect sized screen, great keyboard and a powerful processor you won't find in a ultrabook.
Cons: L/R mouse buttons embedded in the touchpad feel cheap and are somewhat awkward to use, SSD not standard, unit overall is a little on the chunky side (weight and dimensions).
Notes: I work in IT and have been a Thinkpad fan ever since my boss made the decision to start buying them rather than the offering from Dell. Before ordering my x230 I was a little concerned about the new 'island style' keyboard but after using it for a few days I absolutely love it over my T410. The keys have the same tactile feel to them and I feel that my typing is more accurate compared to that on the classic Thinkpad keyboard.
As the unit I purchased did not come with a Solid State Drive I ended up purchasing one aftermarket and installed it myself. Beware that if you decide to do this that the hard drive bay is slightly smaller than 2.5 inches so not every drive will fit. I had a Crucial M4 SSD laying around which I tried to install but it was just a bit too tall to slide into the slot. I ended up buying a new Samsung 830 series drive which worked with no problems. If you don't need the extra space and are willing to spend the money I would highly recommend this upgrade.
Overall, a great purchase!

Forget the Track Pad

Some of you are unhappy with the Track Pad. I disable mine in the BIOS because I don't use it. I use the TrackPoint and more often than not, a Logitech wireless mouse (M305).
I've had ThinkPads for years (at least 4 or 5). I buy them for the Warrantee. It's International (I'm in Guadalajara) and I never have to waste time taking it to an Authorized Service Center - Lenovo comes and picks it up and brings it back. But the 2 ThinkPads I have at present (an X100e purchased in 2010 and a W520 purchased last year) have needed no attention. (The Warrantee for TP X100e was only for 1 one year and the W520 is for 3 or 4). I also have LoJack for the W520, which is what I use. My assistant uses the X100e.
Also, ThinkPads are always well integrated and everything just works. That (rather the latest bells and whistles) is the ThinkPad's focus.
I turn off the TrackPad because tend to I brush it with my thumb while typing and lose my place. I don't need it and neither do you.
I haven't mentioned the quality of the keyboard or the screen because you already know about that. But don't forget - ThinkPads and IdeaPads and Essentials are NOT the same and don't even have the same Warrantee. Stick with ThinkPads if you wan't top quality and top notch service, when needed. Dell, HP and Acer may be cheaper but if the machine needs attention, you're going to lose a lot of time and it won't necessarily turn out the way you want.
I'm not going to bother with the stars. I've provided good information.
BTW: I have 16 GB RAM and two 500GB disk drive in RAID O and this machine is FAST. I have an external Plextor USB 3 BluRay burner. The Machine was configured in China and sent to me in Cleveland.
There are no Cons and I give it 4.5 stars - maybe 5, overall.

Love it to bits

10 years ago, I chose a R32 as my first ever laptop. After having used so many other brands (HP, Sony, Apple, Toshiba and Asus), I went back to my ThinkPad again. It's compact, good build, and more importantly, it's classic. yes the keyboard is new, but it feels great when you type on it. Recommend IPS display option. The colours are more vivid. It makes a huge difference.
Pros: Durability, Screen size, Build Quality, Display performance, Processor, Keyboard/peripherals
Cons: Display resolution
