Learning To Tell A Story
on March 23, 2012

I'm a writer/director, not a photographer. I recently directed a television pilot with a cinematographer who shot it using two Canon 5Ds. In order to better communicate with him on future projects and develop my own sense of visual storytelling, I got the T3i 18-55mm kit and started shooting.

This camera cannot be beat for the price. The quality of images I've been able to achieve is nothing short of miraculous, given that I have almost no prior SLR experience and am somewhat allergic to product manuals.

The user interface is super intuitive and the parts of the manual I actually read are clear and concise. After a month of shooting on full Auto, then experimenting with AV and TV modes, I'm now on full manual, and couldn't be happier with the results.

The 18-55mm lens that came with the kit may not be pro-level quality, but again, for the money, it really produces some outstanding results and is useful in many situations. A pro photographer friend lent me a couple top-level lenses which made a noticeable improvement in my images. This only gave me incentive to save my pennies.

The baseline quality on this kit is excellent and most additional features I long for can be added (lenses) or are otherwise available (a full-size sensor) on other Canon cameras. The only feature not currently available from Canon would be uncompressed video, but I'm sure that can't be too far in the future.

Bottom line: Price:quality is the best on the market, IMHO.
Pros: image quality, ease of operation

The Best Digital SLR Value Out Of The Box
on June 16, 2011

I upgraded from my Canon T1i, which I loved, mainly due to the Full HD video and audio features that were available on the T3i. I have a one year old boy and I would rather preserve some video with him on 1080p than 720p. (it will matter in the future). My main concern in purchasing was about the quality of the HD Video, as it is not Full frame sensor like the Canon 5d Mark II has. However, when I ran my tests, I was more than 150% satisfied that this was the right choice without blowing the bank. You can make a great short film with this camera or even a feature, depending on how far you want to go. Between lenses and the video, this is the SUPER CAMERA right now... I've only had it for 3 days but cannot be more pleased.

Super Fantastic Camera

I use to have a film SLR but is was stolen and it has been a few years since I have owned an SLR camera. I took the big plunge and decided to get a new one, but which one? There are so many to look at, but after looking and feeling and holding all the prospects I got the Canon Rebel T3i with the 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens package. I am re-learning how much fun it is to take pictures and with a digital you can take as many pictures that you want until the microchip fills up which is really hard as I have two 16gb chips, each one will hold over 1800 pictures taken at the 18 megapixel setting. More if I turn it down, but why? Every day I try to go out and take pictures just to learn what this camera can do and it does about anything you want it to do. So if you are looking for a great camera and are new or a professional this is the camera for the price and what you get. Enjoy.
Pros: easy to use, amazing features, quality pictures, video in hd, built in flash, easy lens changes
Cons: always taken pictures never home

This is an entry level slr. The mega pixels, ISO, Auto-focus, etc is more than anyone would ever need if you are using it as an amateur or a everyday camera. Battery life is only bad if you use the LCD screen to take picture or if you shoot a lot of video because it takes a lot of juice to run those opptions (duhh). So in this case that is irrelevant because this will happen with any brand, any product.
After you learn how to use the camera and its modes, a good idea would be an upgraded lens. The camera has a lot more potential than the kit lens allows.

I just got into photography when I got the Powershot SX500 IS. But right as I held the t3i camera and snapped my first picture, I was speechless. This camera works best if you know how to use the manual modes, but auto does a great job.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable

Great value vs 7D

I was out to purchase a 7D because of the advantages, but priced at a grand less, I purchased the T3i as my first SLR camera. I have been happy and used the extra money to purchase other accessories needed for photography and film.
Pros: quiet, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
