Good product, great price but not without flaws

I have owned the EPSON 8350 for about a month. The images it projects are great even with a considerable amount of ambient light. I, however, am concerned about some technical issues and the longevity of this projector.
Within a month of owning it, the projector has begun to show signs of weakness. Upon start up, an "error in the auto-iris" occurs during the self test that prevents the projector from projecting an image. The first few times this occurred, I was able to unplug the projector and power it back on to rectify the problem. Well, this solution no longer works so now I can't get it to project an image at all.
Epson customer service has been great and willing to please me as their customer. They say that this error is equivalent to a "paper jam" in a printer but due to the fact that it has occurred on multiple occasions, I would need another unit.
What concerns me the most is that this does not seem to be an isolated issue. Numerous reviewers across the internet complain of this problem not just with the 8350 but with other Epson models as well and these auto-iris errors seem to be occurring for the first time well into their ownership periods (after 1-1.5 years). I guess I will spare my final judgment on this projector until I receive and get some good use out of the new one.
Overall, the projector does a great job of performing the functions it was built to perform.....when it can perform them. The price of the projector is unbeatable. However, it remains to be seen whether the EPSON 8350 can be a reliable centerpiece to my media room for years to come.

A pro's choice

Outstanding! Color, Brightness, Contrast, noise level all better than expected. I have owned many projectors from the very expensive CRTs years back to other LEDs and this is really an excellent projector. It is very easy to watch and you never miss a single detail even in darker scenes and no artifacts. The white and black levels are amazing and the color and crispness of the images are some of the best I have seen and the set-up is way easy. I have a LG 47" 120Hz LED and the picture from the Epson projector is better on my 82" screen made with a Da-Lite pearl material. I am exceeding 18 foot lamberts off the screen. Oh, BTW...I design and build professional audio and video systems for a living and had any projector to choose from...I picked this one.

Lamp Life Nowhere Close to Claim

I have had my projector for 1.5 years and noticed that lately it did not seem as bright as it had been. I checked the lamp life counter and it was at 875 hours. The claim is 4000 hours. I went up today to check out some college football and low and behold I get the dreaded red lamp replacement light at less than 900 hours. I was extremely happy with the projector until now. Still impressed with the performance but the lamp life is kind of sad.

Lamps don't last even close to 4k hours

I've enjoyed it and want to recomend it but I've gone through 2 lamps in less than 3 years averaging 1200 hours each, so can't. Epson was great about sending a free replacement lamp the 1st time. However, the 2 lamps life times combined don't even match the 4000 advertised and replacing lamps is a pain.
Projector:Good
Lamps: bad
Epson Support: great 1st time, we'll see this time.

Bulb burned out in less than 500 hrs. That is far lower than manufaturers expectations. It is in a cool place and filter cleaned often

The image quality and clarity of this machine is really quite amazing. However, after the first three weeks of use my bulb exploded. Epson has been great thus far with addressing the issue as the bulb was still under warranty. I must say that bulb life was my biggest concern when deciding whether to go with a projector or standard flat screen so I must say that this incident has shook my confidence. However, I'm hoping that this is just bad luck and my new bulb will last above and beyond. Broken bulb aside, as stated, the image quality and viewing experience is fantastic.

Great Machine

Purchased a Epson 7220 at first, but the projector image could not be adjusted to fit on a 120 inch screen. After calling Epson 3 times for adjustment tips, I asked the representative what will fit my needs for a home theater system. They suggested the 8350. This projector image can be adjusted to fit where the projector is mounted 16 feet from the screen just by the turn of the ring around the lens. I admit, I did not want to spend the extra money, but the representative convinced me this will fit my needs. A larger projector, but very easy to set up and used the same ceiling Epson universal ceiling mount purchased for the first projector. Great Machine!!
