Does not do as advertised

I bought this a week or two ago and I’m am NOT happy with this thing. It does NOT seal as advertised and it does NOT vacuum seal as it is stated. I got this so I can vacuum seal my wild game so it would last longer, it will NOT vacuum it all the way and leaves air still in the bag. Also when it seals it, it won’t seal it all the way. I’ve pretty much waisted my money and I’m not happy at all, I do not recommend the FM2000

Does NOT SEAL WET

Pick another model. I love FoodSaver and have been using their vacuum sealers for 15-20 years. but this particular model does NOT perform like my last two did. It does NOT SEAL when wet, so it’s useless for blanching and freezing vegetables from my garden and for vacuum sealing fresh meat or poultry.

We're sorry to hear that your new FoodSaver is not meeting your expectations. You are correct in that it does not seal wet items. We recommend that you always flash freeze meat/fish, fruits/veggies, and freeze sauce/soup solid before vac/seal because moisture will compromise the seal and can compromise the integrity of the FoodSaver altogether. This information is located on page 11 of your manual.

Flash freeze just means you're going to put it in your freezer long enough for the outside to become solid before you vacuum seal it. This will lock the moisture in your meat and keep the FoodSaver itself from vacuuming out all the moisture and deeming it unable to seal the bags properly.

As you know, before you vacuum seal vegetables for long-term storage in the freezer, it's imperative to blanch them first. The National Center for Home Food Preservation reported that blanching, or the boiling of vegetables in water or steam, is crucial to ensure that the foods remain fresh when frozen, as the action inhibits enzymes that may cause discoloration or loss of flavor. In addition, the process both cleans and softens the vegetables, making them easier to store. We typically recommend the following steps to get the best seal:

1. Wash them
2. Cut them
3. Thoroughly dry them
4. Pre-freeze them (to get them nice and solid to avoid smashing them when vacuum sealing)
5. Vacuum seal them

Fits in Kitchen Drawer
on December 19, 2018

Purchased this several years ago because the unit size easily fits in a drawer. I take it out when needed, the store off counter. It works perfectly to seal product bags ie crackers, cookies, potato chips and pretzels. The vacuum seal works well with plastic marinade containers, and all the FoodSaver bags and rolls. Many items last longer whether stored in refrigerator or freezer and worth the extra step to vac seal ie cheese, bacon, leftovers, deli. Overall I love this unit. It is easy to clean, removable tray. My only complaint is the attachment to seal bags tends to break a lot, plastic piece that fits into port has broken several times and the replacement part is fifteen dollars. One has to purchase the entire piece with includes the insert, hose and liquid bottom, thus itmakes the replacement part so expensive. The liquid bottom part is available separately, but that piece has never broken and I now have 6 of them. Which FoodSaver would make the top part only available, it would save me a few bucks when it breaks...or perhaps better plastic and connection.

Poor accessory hose design
on February 14, 2019

Green end accessory hose breaks with minimal use requiring replacement but they are not available. Have not been available for 6 months to a year and have no foreseeable availability. Foodsaver unit is useless to us without this hose as it was purchased for vacuum canning dried goods and marinating both of which require a hose that was poorly designed and not supported. I will be looking for an alternative brand as I now have to replace this new but unusable foodsaver product.

This product is a real bargain!

My old Food Saver finally bit the dust, so I really needed a new one. My garden was great this year, and I came back from vacation with a cooler of fish on dry ice that needed to be better packaged. This model was just what I needed! It works very well. It is a little different from my old model in that when you press "seal," only a red light comes on (no noise) that tells you it is sealing. The light goes off when it is finished. When it is evacuating and sealing, there is a noise while the green light is on to signal evacuation; but then the red light comes on to signal sealing, and it is quiet. When both lights go off, it is finished. I really like the thicker seal line that this machine has compared to my old one. I also like the lever that is used to lock the bag into position, as opposed to pushing on the corners of the machine to lock and unlock it like my old one did. I find the lever very easy to use and like the fact that you always know whether it is locked or unlocked. This updated model has several very nice, new features, as I have described.

Model FM2000 Food Saver
on July 10, 2016

I purchased my first Food Saver model 550 January 2001 and it finally bit the dust. I just bought the model FM2000 and am very happy with it since it's about the same size as my original Food Saver and does not take up a lot of counter space.
I like the added feature to this one, you can vacuum and stop to seal without crushing the contents also.
The only problem I had was I can't use my old round canister set ... you have to buy new canisters with the tops you plug in to. Hope this one lasts as long as my other one!
