I got this as an early Xmas gift! I had not have cable since the spring. Best thing I have ever gotten. There are loads of free channels and there are channels that have a small fee, but still way cheaper than cable of Direct TV.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A great option to traditional TV, cable/satellite

The Roku 1 is my first Roku. I have to say that I am very impressed.
Pros:
Form factor: When unboxing, I was quite impressed at how compact the device is. It is lightweight, and does not take much shelf space, so your TV stand doesn't get all cluttered with stuff.
Setup was easy,: You need a wireless network, because there is no port to put a wired connection.
Useability: I have to be honest and tel you that I did not read the user manual. Probably like most users, I just plugged it in and tried to figure it out. With the simple remote, and uncomplicated menu interface, learning to use the Roku was easy. Certainly easier than using either the Comcast or DirectTV interfaces.
Movie Rental Cost: I would say the movies average about $3.99 to watch on demand. Compared with $4.99 through Google Play Movies, and $5.99 through my satellite provider, this is a good deal. Of course, if you have a streaming subscription service, movie rental is free (though the selection is limited).
Channel Selection: There are a boatload of channels. Lots of content = lots of viewing time. A lot of the free stuff I am interested seems a little dated though.
Cons:

Even after I learn how to watch what I want to watch, the rest of the family still needs to learn. I am a long way away from being able to cut traditional TV off. One standout channel that is notably missing is YouTube. Both my TV and DVD player stream YouTube, so was hoping that Roku would too.
Channel Cost: Most of the really good channels (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc) require a subscription. Even though subscribing to a couple of pay channels would more than off-set the cost of paying for traditional cable/satellite, it is hard to tell what the right mix of subscriptions is.

Great Pictures and Content Selection

I bought a Roku 1 a little over a month ago and found it a very useful replacement for the cable system. I chose Roku 1 because my TV is an old Zenith analog set and this Roku is designed for this type of set. My set is so old that the direct hookup from Roku to TV was not possible for two reasons. I wanted to continue to use my DVD player and the TV does not have receptor sites for the white, red and yellow cable. But, I put an older modulator black box into the mix which could accommodate the above mentioned cable and "dwala" it worked and worked well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

best purchase ever

with the price of directv going up and cable not available I searched for something else. first bought another name brand returned it in 3 weeks and bought the roku 3. very easy set up and we watch more tv than ever. would recommend it to family and friends.

I originally bought the Roku 3 but was unable to keep the connection without a connection to my modem. I returned my Roku 3 and purchased a Roku 1 and it was MAGICAL! It was extremely easy to install and I got the programs I wanted right away.

With so many commercial free choices available, who needs cable or any other pay service ? Some folks complain about slow streaming and glitches, but the issue is not with Roku devices, it's the slow internet connection. I have enjoyed my device so much we bought a second unit and are considering another. Great device Roku keep up the good work.

Even Better Than I Expected

Set up was a breeze. My Blu-ray loses connection often. Roku never does. I cut the cable cord and use Roku to stream Netflix, AMZN and HuluPlus. I get better picture quality with Roku than with cable.
