Cable isn't nessary!!! HIGHLY Recommended..easy to use and it's doesn't take a lot of space.

Don't buy the Roku 1. Spend the money and buy 2

We downgraded our cable to go strictly streaming about a month ago. We bought both a roku 1 and a roku 2 box for our house. The roku 2 is leaps and bounds better all the way around. Our roku 1 box like to stop working out of no where. We will have audio and video up until you hit play to watch something and then poof the video is gone. This happens on every channel. It requires a reset every time. We watch a lot of Netflix and on the roku 1 the Netflix channel looks like it hasn't been updated in years. The format is extremely old and horrible to navigate. It does not autoplay into the next episode and the episodes don't appear to be HD quality. I've turned off Netflix and put on the same thing on Hulu and the quality is much better and clearly HD. We don't have that issue on the other TV with the roku 2 box. Everything works and is amazing on that tv. We chose the 1 for this TV because it was going to see a lot of action in the room it's in, but that doesn't make it any less annoying when you do want to watch something.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I bought ROKU 1 about a month ago. So far, so good. It was easy to set up AND it works with my old TV! I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new TV when my old one was still in good shape. ROKU 1 has the yellow, red and white cords that plug into my TV and presto! Goodbye expensive satellite!

I like the Roku, it has many channels - but it takes forever to load. My FireStick runs much faster.
