The V550 is GREAT
on January 11, 2016

I bought the V550 Photo Scanner as a replacement for Epson's 4490 Photo Scanner. My 4490 is 3+years old and has scanned over 4,500 slides, gobs of photos, and a bazillion text documents. It has never failed and I expect the V550 to provide the same excellent service.
The V550 is about 1" larger all around, and probably weighs a bit more but for a desktop, who cares. I find it to be a bit quieter and all functions mimic the 4490. Epson says the LCD light results in faster scanning with no warm-up.
In actual use, the notice "warming-up" has been replaced with "calibrating", which takes about the same amount of time as warm-up. The only function I've found to be faster is the document display after running "Preview".
I do notice a crisper scan with text, slides, and photos when using auto settings for dpi and color. With slides and photo scans, I import them into photo editing software so I can't comment on Epson's built-in correction options.
I've used both the 4490 and V550 with an iMAC desktop running ver. 11.12.2 without issue. It is important that you download the correct driver for the V550 BEFORE connecting the unit so it's properly recognized. I assume that's accomplished by running the enclosed CD, but it never hurts to be sure ahead of time.
Although not important, I find the design to be much improved over the 4490, far more office like with a full squared off top to put "stuff" on <grin>. If there's a negative, the auto-buttons on the front of the unit are easily activated by accident with fingers when opening the top for scanning.
Lastly, all my peripherals are Epson and based upon reliability alone, I'm sold on all their products AND phone support which is not located in a foreign country. I only wish their printer ink cartridges were less expensive!?

Awesome Scanner

I am in love with scanner. Very quick scans and easy to use and as a photographer that does do slideshows and photo retouching this scanner has been the perfect cost worthy scanner. Be prepared for any and every defect to show though when scanning, it is so fine that it finds stuff our eyes can not can not see and with my profession it is great, but to a normal user preserving photos you might be surprised...lol. Well worth the money, I should have bought this along time ago instead of dealing with my all-in-one printers for scanning. The scan time on this is remarkable and if you place multiple pictures or document on the bed of the scanner and give them space, the scanner will automatically separate them for you and technically you get 2 or more scans in one, so that is a HUGE plus when time is money for me on this scanner!

Epson V550 Photo Scanner

I needed a replacement scanner for film; I compared features and prices between brands and models and the V550 was the winner. The setup was fairly simple, but the operation can be difficult even after using it for a couple weeks. I use the V550 through my PC vs the buttons on the front of the V550. There are multiple modes of operation and I mainly use the Professional Mode. A couple of things to remember are if you set up a location to send your scans to, the program will default to that location until you change it. Also, even if you delete a file and re-scan it, it will go to the next file number. The Digital ICE software is great, I had 45 year old slides with dust, etc and the scans were fantastic. The scan speed is slower when you push the dpi to greater than 300. A plus is using the print P/B on the V550 front panel, it brings up a menu on the PC asking what you want and then brings up a menu for your printer so you can choose paper, photo paper, size, etc. and then print the scan. A negative is the power P/B. It offered no resistance when I pushed it and I thought it was broken, however when I looked at the front panel Ready Led I saw it lite. Another negative is the templates to hold the film, they are light weight plastic. However, I have found sites online that offer replacement templates and the document matte (white removable screen in lid) and the prices are very reasonable. One last note, when I scan multiple items in the Professional Mode and press Preview, some settings changed. Before I press Scan, I find I have to go back and press Select All and Digital ICE. I am glad I purchased this scanner.

Great for Photos, marginal for negatives

This unit performs very well for photos and documents, and the software is fairly easy to learn. In some cases, it does a good job with negatives, but there are two limitations: (1) Negatives can only be scanned in a small section in the middle of the scanner. You cannot cover the entire scanner with negatives. (2) The software automatically separates the negatives, but often separates them in the wrong place, particularly near the end of a negative strip and whenever anything other than standard 35 mm negatives are scanned. There is no way to disable the automatic separation. 5 Stars for photos and documents, 2 stars for negatives.

Bought V550 to replace an older Perfection whose performance was excellent. Looking for the same software, one that allowed me to scan as close to the original as needed. This allowed me to use Adobe Photoshop CS3 to work on negatives and slides, as well as photographs to finish my work. While this is a hobby, I want excellent results without having to by the ultra scanners that professionals would use. Have scanned photos from the 1930's with really fine results; same for the slides and film I've scanned. Great buy for the money.

Great scanner......Very easy to set up, and easy to use. We are able to use this scanner on our Vista computer, Windows7 Laptop, and our Windows 8.1 computer. It quick, and simple to use. We've scanned 35mm slides, film strips, photos, they were scanned perfect. It will also scan stereo veiw master slides from the 1950-60
era. It a great tool for us saving our family history.

Epson Perfection V550 Photo Scanner

This is my second Epson scanner. I used a V500 for over three years. Both scanners worked flawlessly. The real treat was the extremely easy set-up to my PC (Windows 7). Within a few minutes I had been scanning photos both B/W and color without a bit of trouble. By the by, one can scan multiple photos at the same time but you will need to experiment placing them on the glass so they reproduce separately within your software program. This will save you some time. I have used the custom setup for some of my "not so good" photos and again it is very intuitive. I have used the slide application a number of times without a hitch. I highly recommend this scanner to anyone who wants to scan old and new photos, documents, slides and negatives. A great product.

For slides

Purchased this scanner to transfer my extensive slide collection to the computer. It words very well, except that the custom tray only does 4 slides at a time, and is a bit slow. If you have the time and patience, it's a great machine for this purpose.
