epson v550 photo

Very satisfied with this product. Reproduces negatives to photo to 100 percent of the original. Lots of editing capability. A very large range of resolution options. However, at the high end it can take a long time to scan four negatives. Over all, I'm very satisfied. I'm sure there are better products out there, but at the price, this one works just fine. No problems so far

Great scanner

I bought this scanner to use for scanning in old newsletters and archival material for a society that I belong to. I was wanting something light weight and quite. This scanner is perfect for that. The resolution is great and it scans quickly. Setup was a breeze and I had no problems getting up and running quickly. Highly recommend this to anyone that is looking for a new scanner at a reasonable price.

Epson V550

I owned a Nikon Cool Scan V that I bought with some foto contest earnings several yrs ago, but having upgraded my computer, the drivers no longer worked. I researched flat bed scanners and thought I'd try the V550 (actually newer than the 600) I've scanned some 35mm slides with it and was surprised at the results. Im scanning them at 600 and they look fine. I need to scan some negatives as well but haven't got around to it yet. I'm not sure should I scan them at 300 or better? Any experience in the matter would be appreciated. For the money, this scanner is a deal.

Admirable Machine

Have only scanned fifteen photographs but every one has been reproduced exactly (even better) as I intended. So far the machine's precision and operating ease are better than expected. Only one caveat: I use Windows 8.1 and Office 2013, which required unique loading of the scanner software due to the ABBYY portion. Without that unique loading, Office 2013 is stymied; but Epson Support walked me through the fix with ease.
Wonderful instrument!

V550 photo scanner

I bought this because of my experience of using a Epson 3170 with V500 software. I needed the a scanner now and was looking to buy a V500 but the V550 was all that was available and I paid full retail. I am happy with my purchaser. I scanned over 400 prints at 300 dpi over 3 days and they could have not been better. I have scanned negatives and slides with excellent results. The film holders could have been better. I use cutout vanilla folder paper as guides for negatives with a newton free glass to hold the negatives down. I would have liked a larger exposure area for negatives and more documentation on how to use the buttons, "fix" and other features and how to best use the software. I especially like the software where I can set the resolution, image type like tiff, j-peg etc, set contrast, density etc. I Love this scanner and would highly recommend it. I use it to scan family photos, negatives and slides. I also use it to archive historical negatives and prints.

poor instructions

All you get with your purchase is a quick start sheet that makes it sound like you just press a button and everything is perfect. Not so! Even the supplied CD instructions just scratch the surface, at best. You must devote a lot of time to figure out how this thing works because you're on your own. I would not have bought it if I had known this. As for the rating, I have never owned a photo scanner, so I didn't have a comparative baseline, so I gave it a 3 because of the lack of complete instructions. I expected more of Epson.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

V550 Review

We purchased the Epson V550 Scanner to scan old photo negatives and slides from the 1950-60's. My husband and I are not very techy, but the Epson Scanner was easy to follow the instructions for setup and beginning to scan old negatives and slides. We were able to print photos that we had never seen. The V550 Scanner is well worth the money and easy to use. We would highly recommend this product.

Not So Good

The first one I received was defective and had to return. Additionally, the USB cord was also defective. The replacement scanned 35 mm film ok but could not scan my 35mm slides as the holder was too large. The unit is not equipped to scan 10mm film. The scanner holders are very fragile & probably would break soon. The instruction manual is lacking in fully explaing the procedures and some trial is necessary. The teck support for this model is not good - they seem untrained in the working details of the V550. Photos are no better than the multi unit 3520. The unit was returned.
