Simply an incredible scanner. I am scanning family pictures we just found, some of them over a century old and the scanned images look better than the originals in many cases. Not a cheap scanner but worth every dime.

A worthwhile upgrade

I upgraded to this Epson scanner from an Epson unit several years old but which was very familiar to me in my work. That unit died finally and was beyond salvage. Initially I was frustrated by V550 but soon realized I was frustrated by its broad range of features that I was unfamiliar with. Today after teaching myself how to make use of its options (am I the only person who prefers hard copy user manuals and not online versions?), I am very happy with the V550, particularly its four-way customizing of photo scans: from press-the-button scans for everyday use to a myriad of sophisticated options for refining and enhancing color and contrast. I also am impressed with the V550's ability to scan color and b&w negatives for making prints. The unit's design also is pleasing: sleek, compact, handsome.

It works. Every time. And it was intuitive to set upright out of the box. Occasionally I wish for the capacity of a bigger plate size but for 99+% of what I do it does it all VERY WELL. My main use is copying old family photos so I can digitally improve them but I also digitize most of my financial records and important papers with this scanner. Not a heavy user, only some 1,400 photos and 400 documents have been scanned in five months, but I love this unit.

Very Easy and Convenient

I previously had an Epson V500 scanner - physically similar to this one, but the controls have been simplified. Just select the "Full Auto Mode," and no other buttons or selections need to be made. Of course, there are advanced selections, but for my occasional use for email attachments or web posts, they are not necessary.
Setup was easy, too.

Great scanner!!!

I am an Epson fan and had been looking for an inexpensive way to scan negatives and slides. This scanner is perfect! I do recommend using photo editing software so you can clean up the flaws you will find...negatives and slides usually have dust, fingerprints, and scratches.

Replacing old scanner

Very good performance and matches that of a Canoscan that is no longer supported after Windows XP.
Only downside is that there is no holder for medium format slides/transparencies.

DOING THE JOB EASILY

This is my first single purpose scanner and this 550 seems to do it as promised. Although the many basic features are easy to use, there are still some I am trying to figure out. I love the fact it does 3 to 4 photos at once. I am scanning mostly 70 year old B & W WWII pictures from my fathers service time and so far it is wonderful to have those memories digitized for may more years to come.
I am very carefull about keeping the top closed and dust free as possible and I use a lint free cloth to wipe each photo I set on the scanning bed. No dust issues yet. With only 2 weeks of use I can not say anything about lasting quality. I choose the 550 over the less expensive photo scanners because of my research of the under $100.00 scanners, they always mentioned "dust" issues. A very nice tool for what I am doing.
