Excellent Scanner

The scans produced by the V550 are of excellent quality. Very sharp and with accurate color. The included Abby FineReader is a very capable software package.
So what's not to like? Just one thing: the plastic transparency holder for 35mm slides and film strips is poorly designed. I used to have an Epson Perfection 2400 scanner, and in that unit the filmstrip holder allowed you to simply slide the strip into the holder. It had tabs on both sides of the holder that kept the film in place by the edges. The new design that's included with the V550 has two parts: the main holder and a 2nd "retainer" piece that snaps into the main holder to hold the film in place. This is not very easy to use, as the snaps are rather tight and it feels like the "retainer" piece (which is very flimsy) will break easily. It is also nearly impossible to use on filmstrips that have been rolled up and have a curl to them unless you have two sets of hands: one to hold the film flat and the other to snap the retainer in. Fortunately I still have the old holder from my 2400 and it still lines the film up properly on the V550, so I use that one mostly. The "new" holder can definitely use a redesign or a reversion back to the way it used to be.

This is a great scanner. I do three pictures at a time. It takes about 1 minute and the quality is great.

I was more than ready to use this scanner as my old Epson was not compatible with Win7. The new technology is a wonderful improvement. Photos scan in beautifully and I was most impressed with the OCR scans into Word. I scanned in 80 year old newspaper clippings and they were read with little need for corrections. Not only read, but columns and page sizes adjusted. As the family historian I need to have a scanner that will enable all of the old documents to be digitized and I believe this scanner is up to the task.

Great scanner

Bought this scanner last night in order to produce a couple photos for my mom off old slides (40s) and the pictures came out as if I had just taken them ! Also have old slides from the 20s and they reproduced without problem! I'm very pleased

V550 is as advertised - so far

My wife has used the V550 to scan some 1,000 slides and it has worked as advertised. We are very pleased so far and would recommend this scanner.
It installed perfectly on our Windows based PC. Simply follow the instructions. Although the software is not graphically current with technology as a Windows based system, it is thus far working fine. We've not had to use many of the options, but the ones we selected for scanning slides have done a great job. Color enhancement and scratch drop out seem to be working as expected. Again, just follow the instructions.
I'm looking forward to using it to scan pictures and documents (for loading into Word) and I expect no problems based on its performance so far.
I would strongly recommend the scanner, even for a novice. My wife is not a rocket scientist and she has still managed to master its use.

My daughter first bought one of these scanners for her work and then when I saw the diversity of things it could do I purchased one also. i am so impressed at the quality it gives even with scanning very old negatives and slides. I purchased it for this very reason and I have not been diasappointed.

Great Scanner!

Hardware and software are both intuitive and easy to use. I have been scanning mostly 3x5 glossy photos, but also used it for some slides from the '70s. Works great for all. I haven't experimented much with different modes of operation, using the system in 'Full Auto' mode. System is reliable and consistent. Only complaint is about the template that holds slides. It needs to be positioned carefully on the scanner bed, but the arrangement for assuring that positioning is not too good. Only other wish would be for faster speed. I've got thousands of photos to scan, but never enough time to do it.

I needed a scanner for business. This scanner had easy software installment and has worked perfectly since the day I purchased it. The clarity is awesome. The ease of use is great and simple.
I've only scanned one photo and it came out great. I would recommend this to anyone who has a business or who wants an easy to use scanner for the home.
