Great scanner ! Works great on pictures and negatives. Better quality than I would have thought. Easy to use also once you get the hang of everything. My major complaint is the instructions that come with this unit. They are vague and hard to follow, almost like who ever wrote them up is trying to confuse you rather than try to instruct you. I learned more from watching a 15 minute youtube video on how to use this unit, than I did in 2 hours of trying to read the manual. This is one area that could use some improvement for this machine. Other than that I am pleased with it.

Great piece of equipment!

I've used Epson printers and printer/scanners before, so had an idea of what to expect, but was not prepared to be this impressed by the V550. The software installation was very easy and straightforward, and the software itself is clear and simple to use. All of the options (and there are many) are clearly available and those that I've used have functioned flawlessly. I'd read reviews noting the "loud" sound produced while in some scanning modes, but have found that not to be the case with mine. It operates quietly and with surprising speed considering the density of the scans I do for photo and slide retouching. I'm extremely pleased with this scanner and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting quality scans of photos, slides and negatives.

Great Scanner

Bought this scanner to scan both photos and slides from the past 40 years. Quite a project, but the software and scanner quality seem to be up to the job. I appreciate the ability to fine tune the settings in Professional Mode. This replaced a multi-function machine from a competitor that only did a mediocre job.

I was excited to get started using my new Epson 550 Photo Scanner. I have years of photos and negatives and slides I wish to preserve. In buying this scanner I am on my way! The instructions were clear and concise and during my first round of scanning it was simple to intuit what to do, where to go next. So far I am very pleased. In researching which scanner to buy it became apparent to me that Epson produces a good product, one that is reliable and of high quality. I look forward to scanning again soon!

I bought this scanner to scan slides. I find it works very well . I think it has a very good picture program and easy to use. the only problem is it only scans 4 slides at time. If it did more it would be great. It took me 1 hour to scan 100 slides. Emil J Fasano

Works great for medium format film scans

I bought the scanner to scan many medium format (6x7) B&W negatives and color slides (mostly Fuji Velvia) I am a professional fine art photographer and scanner/Photoshop rookie.
The slides scanned extremely well. I've printed the scans up to 13x19 with great detail and color accuracy. (Epson printer)
The B&W negs scanned well but, the grain was an issue on grainy negatives. The grain reduction in the scanning software worked OK but, can't fix really grainy negatives (not the scanner's fault). Fine grained negatives worked just as well as the color scans. I have also scanned a few 35mm B&W negs with good results.
I've probably scanned 50+ negatives/slides and must say I am very happy especially with the Velvia slides. The film holders while feeling flimsy actually hold the negatives very securely.
The scanner controls and software are quite intuitive. I'm getting good results without really reading the instructions. That's my next goal...
One other feature that is helping me is to scan/print B&W negs prior to going into the darkroom. I can see so much more clearly how the negative is likely to print which is a real time saver since I still like darkroom prints for B&W.
The only feature I wish it had was an ability to scan large format film.
Overall, the scanner is doing everything I bought it to accomplish. The output is definitely of high enough quality for exhibition and sale.

One of the best purchases I have ever made. I had wanted to get a photo scanner which could scan negatives and slides and it is so much fun to use. The images are brilliant on their own without manual editing. Easy to use, even for a tech naive person. The instructions that were installed on my desktop covered all of my questions. Bought on sale but would have paid full price. So glad I chose another Epson. I also have an Epson Workforce 2540 and it is perfect also. I will not ever buy anything other than an Epson. I even bought a workforce for my parents because it is so easy to use.

V550 Scan Speed

Bought this scanner just to scan 3000 old family photos,, hooked it all up even bought a separate hard drive external.. it takes avg 35 seconds per pic to scan from putting pic in and taking out of scanner .. i feel the speed is slow also each scan does not automatically bring you back to scan screen.. you need to open short cut then click scan button. or touch button on front of machine then wait till option to click scan again
