Easy set-up on my Mac running High Sierra, with scanner software downloaded from Epson site. (The OCR software on the included CD was not available on the Epson site and I had to transfer it from another computer with a CD drive.) Scanner performs well with good resolution on 35 mm slides and negatives, but the negative holder is flimsy.

Slow but Steady

At first, the results from slide scanning were bad! By trial and error therefore, all this was solved but; time consuming. For those who have just bought this scanner, my advice is to stick with it because ultimately you will be happy. Since many of my slides go back to the 80s, I actually thought they might be the fault, however, by making the right adjustments on the scanner, this proved wrong. The slides were quite good and worthwhile to scan and digitize.
The scanner is quiet, doesn't take an inordinate amount of time to work unless you use all the Epson software during the processing stage. I do not. My preference is to use Photoshop. I found ICE technology to be avoided as it added unwanted artifacts to the image but otherwise, can say that at the Professional level choice in the software, all went excellent.
The Perfection V550 is a nice piece of equipment and even attractive on the desk alongside the other devices and computer. Priced nicely, easy to operate, and reliable. Like stated on the header, it can be slow in slide scanning so you can "walk away" if need be. A good fit and a happy addition!

We bought this scanner a while back based on a review that said it worked great for scanning old photos. It works better that great, it is AWESOME for archiving photos. My wife has used it to scan well over 500 old family photos plus my old 35mm slides. Very easy to set up and use with fantastic scanned pics. Well worth the $$ and then some.

I have a ton of old negatives from my parents dating back to the 1920's. I have no idea of the film size, but was able to transform into digital photographs with the Epson Perfection scanner. How wonderful to see photos of my young father, downtown Houston in the late 20's and photos from WWII. Great results for both B7W and color negatives.
