Got this particular GE microwave because the one I had before, was an almost identical model and lasted just about 20 years. I hope this new one lasts just as long.

Occasionally will not shut off. After cooking time has elapsed, I have to open and close the door several times to get it to shut off.

Old School GE Reliability

This GE Microwave comes with a ton of features that any kitchen will benefit from.
The installation is quite a chore and must be done with more than one person. We used the combination of YouTube videos posted by do-it-yourselfers installing over-the-range microwave ovens to aid us through the written GE instructions. It is a must that the manual is read; GE provides large cut out patterns and installation instructions translated in English and Spanish. I would love to see more of the cutout sheets to apply to all installations instead of just a few cases. I would also recommend that GE develop professional YouTube installation videos to ensure for correct installation. If you do this without the aid of a professional I recommend that you measure often especially when setting the bracket in the center of your wall to the cabinet. Luckily, my father-in-law was an expert at this and the project was completed with minimal problems. No cutting into cabinetry needed to be done as this installation was a replacement for an existing over-the-range microwave oven.
The overall operation of the microwave is superb. I appreciate the 2 speed vent system. In my installation it is connected to exterior piping, venting cooking smells outside. It does come with grated aluminum filters located near the exterior intakes that can be removed for cleaning when necessary. The vent system however is pretty loud but moves air very effectively. For lighting, it uses a halogen bulb that has two brightness settings. One for regular use and one dimmer setting to be used as a night light. It comes equipped with a programmable night light setting that allows an automatic on and an off time to be set - so you don't have to remember to turn it on at night and then off again in the morning. The "beep" of the microwave's keypad and end of cooking cycle timer can be controlled in 4 levels: normal volume, high, low or turned off completely. The turntable can also be turned off as well in case you are warming up a heavy dish that may damage the motor of the turntable. This powerful microwave heats very quickly and comes with a rack (to be used when only when you are heating more than one at a time).
This microwave won me over many others because of its express cooking settings. No other microwave I shopped for had this feature. It allows for the user to start the microwave quickly for small cooking times between 1 to 6 minutes without having to go through the normal pattern of buttons necessary to start the microwave [cook time]+[time needed for items to cook]+[start]. It is not known for being quiet rather, it does cook with minimal noise made. The combination of turning off the "beep" completely (known as "mute") and regular use of the microwave makes for a very soft noise level that anyone can appreciate.
Be advised that ALL stainless steel products will need maintenance beyond normal cleaning. I use a disinfectant to remove germs on the interior and exterior (the interior of the microwave is a white enamel). The exterior needs to be finished with an oil based cleaner to remove fingerprints (i.e. Lemon Pledge Furniture Polish) on all of my stainless steel appliances and accessories (trash cans, tea pots, toasters, toaster ovens, and more...). In my experience there is no such thing as "fingerprint free" stainless steel and all consumers that are interest in the look of stainless steel should be aware of that when converting their decor.
All in all, GE continues to make a reliable appliance and as of today I will continue to use them worry free. The last GE microwave served the previous owners of our home for 10 years. My parent's GE microwave lasted 15 years and I anticipate my microwave will last even longer as it is well cared for and built well.
