It's super cool! I've definitely made both kids and adults impressed with it. It doesn't fit over my iPhone case so I primarily hold it in a different hand, which takes a few to get used to but I actually prefer to on-phone use. I love that it saves the photos straight to my phone which is easy for sharing. I wish I could save it to the cloud somewhere or on the device instead of my phone however because the photos are larger and take up a good bit of room. I would also be interested in a case for it! I borrowed a case from one of my SLR lenses so it wouldn't get banged around in my bag when carrying it around. Overall: Very cool. Recommended! The price point was the only thing most of my friends had hesitation about. Would be more likely to check out around $150.

Very Cool Camera - Interface needs work, still!!!
on March 21, 2014

I first really took a look into the QX10 just last week. After some YouTube research, I had to have one. I am very satisfied with the quality of the pictures and the lens camera itself so far. Great pictures and a great idea. This device clearly is not made for the quick "pull out of you pocket" camera shoot, but it is great for a quick setup and pulling in of a great picture without lugging around a lot of extra stuff. I have used the lens with 2 different cell phones and a tablet.
The interface is a problem. PlayMemories is still buggy as of March 21, 2014. The program often hangs up on my Samsung S4 requiring a forced shut down. The NFC connection more often than not does not work. Straight WiFi connection is also a little slow. The interface really needs to be fixed and reliable. This is the only reason I can not give a full 5 stars. The interface also has me considering returning the lens. The QX10 is a great toy, but if I can not use it, why keep it.

Good lens & sensor, bad interface to iPhone
on September 28, 2013

Photo results have been good, sometimes impressive. However, the iPhone interface is awkward, at best. Examples:
1) Each shot fired, the image comes up for review, but stays there, requiring the extra step of pressing 'return' to get back to shooting mode. Thus, you cannot shoot quickly.
2) Setting-up to shoot, each time I must open the app, switch on the camera, close the app and enter settings to 'find' the QX-10, return to the app & reopen, at which point it 'finds' the QX-10, connects, and is ready to shoot.
This suggests it was designed to operate properly with Sony NFC phones, but Not with iPhones. Awkward at best.
3) Camera jams. An image will 'stick', without ability to 'return' to shooting mode. Requires closing the app, rebooting app, app 'finding' camera, to recommence.
In short, nothing works smoothly.
In conclusion, possibly a software upgrade, a rewriting of the app, may establish a workable 'flow' between iPhone and the QX-10. Until then, you may call me disappointed.

works well after frustrating start up.

I bought this to work with my iphone5, and it does. it can get frustrating using it at home as every time I turn it off, the iphone will sign back onto the home wifi, so to switch back to camera/lens I have to disconnect from home wifi via setting first. I’ve found that it’s less complicated when I’m not at home, connect once and it will reconnect every time.
I was most hopeful for the superior low light quaility over my iphone. the wife and I took it to a dimly lit sushi restaurant where it did perform well, but we did a side by side comparison (zoom all the way in on details) and the advantage over the pic she took with her iphone5 was nominal.
I’ve not yet found how to adjust the date stamp, first day I turned it registers as Jan 1st, and then Jan 2nd etc etc.
I do look fwd to using this at ACL next week. I plan to use and extension pole to get it above the crowd and will still be able to use iphone as viewfinder.

Amazing low-light pics, but lags at times

I bought this camera for a trip to Greece and it enabled me to take some amazing pictures, especially at night. The UI is intuitive and the Play Mobile app is great. I like the idea of having a camera that instantly saves to my phone, very convenient for sharing pics/vids.
The only real downside is that it if you have the camera off and the app closed, when you want to take a picture, it takes about a minute to 90 seconds to turn on the camera, load the app, and wait for them to sync so you can take a picture. Therefore, capturing spontaneous moments can be difficult, unless you have the app and camera synced already, which can kill the battery on the camera and your phone.

DSC-QX10 is fun to play with

Far most consumer needs to know that these type of device is great gadget to use with smartphone to enhance photo experience but would not replace DSLR or M4/3 camera. QX100 is nice F1.8 unit with nice Zeiss lens and also QX1 has now ability to use any Sony lens with adapter.
My experience with QX10 is fine knowing the capability and expectoration. I use my Olympus OMD EM-5 with pro lens so when I compare the results there is much to compare. My OMD has superior quality. Now the QX10 for the size and ability to 10x zoom (27.5~275) awesome to say. I'm using iPhone 6 Plus with Thule case so it does not fit with case so I order tablet attachment parts that will give the width I need to fit to my iPhone 6 plus. I did try without the case and few small room to fit.
WiFI connectivity between my iPhone 6 Plus and QX10. Very simple as put the encryption key and after the QX10 is powered up connecting from the iPhone takes about 10sec once you see the SSID of the QX10. IOS app works great and while it does not run in background so if you exit it has to reconnect but only takes 5sec or so. I had not issues and I just go the camera today.
Firmware is 3.0 and IOS app is latest and I have not seen any trouble on connectivity.
I did notice that when I was using Movie Mode and looking at my iPhone screen and it freeze while I was moving the camera in circle. Actually video did not lost any frame so I can only assume that due to wireless connectivity some bandwidth or transfer glitch. I personally don't use video much unless I'm making some review for youtube.
QX10 does have limitation on shooting mode. Just three mode. Two are the iAuto, iAuto + then P mode. both iAuto works fine and I think iAuto + suppose to do better on blur so using on lower light might help better. Although I been using iAuto+ overall and do fine. You can hear take multiple shots. P mode does allow two thing, ISO and EV settings iAuto/iAuto+ mode does take very natural shot expecting same tone balance as you looking at the objects. P mode does not give full live sensor mode until you shoot and look the results. My OMD does live sensor so I can get what I want quicker.
It does not have flash so in very low right situation you may not able to take good shot as higher ISO and these small sensor may give grainy results.
All in all QX10 is easy and quite reliable point shoot unit. QX10 is for you if you just need simple, easy and has smartphone. Someone who like to go more simpler without carrying low end point shoot camera. And like me just like to have with me if I don't have my high end camera or just need out on the date for not carrying bulky camera bag.
These device is very unique while you can not expect the perfect photo the size fits in your palm I think it's nice supplement to have.
When you start paying more money on QX100 or QX1 I would recommend to setup up and invest on DSLR (Nikon, Canon, Leica, Pentax )or M4/3 like Olympus OMD, PEN and Panasonic Lumix.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I love my XMAS GIFT FROM MY BROTHER!!!
Its awesome for trips and for taking macro pictures!
If you have a drone you can actually install it and use it for the ipad mini or your iphone! I have an iphone with 16 gigabites not enough memory to take pictures it consumes the memory fast! Videos specially! But! With my brothers gift for me im a sony fan, and i have always loved sony gadgets! Very unique, classic, original and amazing hardware :)
Thank you sony! For your awesome extra portable lens! I wish it could link automatically the DSC-QX10 to the pairing on the ipad or iphone a bit faster it would just make everything better please! Update the version on the iOS and also make it faster to manipulate to actually take the moment right there and at a good timing!
:)
