Overall, I have been very happy with turbo tax. Last year it was extremely helpful in dealing with my stock options sales. this year I didn't sell stock, but found it to equally effective in just normal tax filing
Clear process, step-by-step with an unusual return this year, yet was clear to understand and the step process, while taking some time continued to let me see my tax burden steadily decrease to a very manageable amount. The checks at the end of the return are excellent.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
It really makes filling out tax forms easy. The only thing I would change is that I wish that there was a single worksheet that would list all of my charitable contributions. I type in all that info, but don't want to print out a page for every charity - not sure why it can't all be combined on one page, with a total at the bottom, for my records.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Loved the step by step directions. The sales tax vs income tax deduction could use more detailed directions and a link to the sales tax rates for all of the states. Early withdrawal 401(k) tax deduction (10% AGI / medical expenses) should have been transferred from the medical worksheet and the questions about the withdrawal should be at the end of the tax form.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have used Turbo Tax for many years. Mostly I am pleased with the product but this year was particularly underwhelmed.
There are a lot of good things about the software. I especially like the feature that automatically grabs all the pertinent information from the 2012 return to populate the 2013 return. This saves a lot of time. The screens are easy to step through, provide information and links, and you can move from the easy step to forms and back very easily.
The phone support is pretty good. This is something I found out about this year having to spend a couple of hours with a support person trying to work through the issues I discovered in the software.
The issues I found in this year’s software are:
1. The software got into an endless loop when filling out the information on Foreign Assets. I called for support and we eventually had to abandon the easy step walkthrough and go fill in the appropriate forms directly. The forms in question were the 8938 and 8891 forms. I had to manually go to those forms, fill in the information in the correct lines and then go back to the easy step to complete the rest of the 1040.
2. There were duplicate entries for some of the 1099’s that I downloaded.
3. The screens pertaining to the 8938 form was repetitive and confusing. Three screens in a row ask the same question about ‘do you have any more foreign assets’.
4. The scrolling of the screens is very slow making it painful to try and move back and forth on a form.
Because of these issues I feel that the development and test team rushed this product out the door before fully testing it. You should be able to use the program to step you through each item without having to break out and fill in specific forms.
